To think my baby's legs aren't that fat, or are they?

I've just bought some wellies for my 12 month old. His legs don't really fit in them if he has trousers on. He is a bit of chunk but I sort of thought most babies had chubby legs. But perhaps they don't. So do I just have an obese baby or do others have these issues too? I guess it's another trip to Clarks for me!

It's just down to the fit of the clothing. My eldest GC had the same trouble, we had to buy her shorter style wellies. She's always been in the same, or smaller size clothing than her age.

As long as you are feeding a good diet, don't worry. As sokn as they start to run around as toddlers, they drop their body fat.

Skipsurvey · 02/12/2020 06:56

are they badly made wellies?

Skipsurvey · 02/12/2020 06:57

try charity shops, decent wellies but second hand

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 02/12/2020 06:57

Most wellies are quite big and the tops wide, where did you get them? Maybe just an odd Welly anomaly. Does your DC have quite small feet for their age so the boots are designed for a younger child? We have the opposite with DS, he has big feet and wellies are quite loose around the calf as they're probably intended for a child a year older

ladycarlotta · 02/12/2020 07:09

My daughter is a skimpy little thing but we get a lot of hand-me-down boots and trousers from friends whose toddlers of the same age can't fit into because of their 'chunky' legs. None of these children look fat to me. I think it must be an issue with the cut. I really wouldn't worry, OP, especially at this age.

Ijumpedtheshark · 02/12/2020 07:12

Most babies get really chunky before they walk and then as soon as they are on their feet the weight falls off. I really wouldn’t worry about it.

OverpaidT · 02/12/2020 07:13

They are an infant size 4 from Asda. He is fed well and eats a variety of foods. He isn't over fed (or at least I don't think he is). All the short wellies are out of stock it seems. I'll try charity shops once they are open.

Don’t worry, my son is 15 months and he can only just wear wellies. Not with a snowsuit though. He is chunky and healthy but certainly not obese. If it helps, my older son is now 3 and has super muscly calves from all his running and jumping and he was the exact same as DS2 when he was one and couldn’t wear wellies either. I have Hunter wellies for the children.

madcatladyforever · 02/12/2020 07:15

All babies have chunk legs so squeezable Grin
I gave up on wellies when my son was little because of the chunk, they never fit him without digging in.
He's now a lean 40 year old marathon runner.

ApolloandDaphne · 02/12/2020 07:16

Wellies aren't great for very young children. They are hard to walk in and hard to keep on. I would go with robust ankle boots until he is older. I am sure his legs are very normal and adorable.

Banoffeepies · 02/12/2020 07:19

I had to cut slits down the side of my daughters wellies to fit her legs in Blush. She’s a big girl though, been walking 4 months now and no sign of the weight falling off though!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/12/2020 07:22

I hope you find some wellies to fit, but please don’t worry about the fat. Gds had real Michelin-man legs as a baby - fat as butter, as they used to say. He’s now a tall, very slim 4 1/2 year old.

IMO babies are supposed to have good reserves of fat. If they get sick they can lose weight so alarmingly quickly, and assuming they’re not fed a load of junk, it soon goes once they start running around.

suziedoozy · 02/12/2020 07:29

I’ve given up on wellies for my almost 20 month old - they do fit but she really struggles to walk longer distances in them & get grumpy. Also they are a pain in the arse to put on!

I have a ‘sacrificial’ pair of little boots that we use for all hideously wet / muddy outing then a second pair of boots that are kept in slightly better condition. She is happier with them on then a puddlesuit

Hahaha88 · 02/12/2020 07:30

Maybe snowboots would be a good alternative?

Angeldust747 · 02/12/2020 07:33

We had the same problem, DD had chunk legs as a baby, even into being a toddler. The in laws got her some gorgeous doc marten boots and they were such a struggle to zip up and they only just went past her ankles 🙈

Cheeeeislifenow · 02/12/2020 07:34

Oh I love fat baby legs sqqquuueeezzzeee!!! So cute!

BrummyMum1 · 02/12/2020 07:35

My first DC was the same. We bought some Bogs (soft top waterproof wellies). Nothing to do with being fat. Babies come in all different shapes and sizes, same as adults. Lots of adults find boots tight on their legs as well.

Bumpsadaisie · 02/12/2020 07:35

Don't worry. As soon as he gets toddling he will lose a lot of his baby chubbiness. My son was like a little Michelin man at 13 mths before he started walking. Now he is an enormously tall skinny 9 year old with long legs and enormous feet.

Bramblecrumble · 02/12/2020 07:35

Wellies are not great for balence at that age. they are big and clunky. Also they are a pain. Yesterday at the playground, I saw a mum struggle with her nearly two year olds wellies, wouldn't fit on over thick socks and a raincoat.

OverpaidT · 02/12/2020 07:36

His legs are lovely. He had his MMR yesterday and even the nurses commented Grin but he is a chunk. A sacrificial pair of boots is a good idea. I'll check eBay to see if there are any on there.

I love a pair of squishy baby legs! I think they're meant to be sturdy. I second PP's idea of Bogs, they are on the pricey side but waterproof and quite short so I would have thought they would fit even the stoutest little legs. Relatively easy to get on too.

Lovemusic33 · 02/12/2020 07:43

I clicked on the thread hoping to see chubby baby leg photos. My dd was a chunk and had huge chubby legs, people use to comment on them, I can conform that she’s now a skinny teenager. I think she was chubby until she was 2/3 and then she shot up and slimmed out. I wouldn’t worry, we always had issue with welly boots and socks.

BarbarAnna · 02/12/2020 08:11

I was hoping for chunky baby leg photos too!

I am pretty sure wellies shouldn’t be worn by such a young baby. At this age, surely he is only just in first walkers?

FreshfieldsGal · 02/12/2020 08:18

Another one hoping for chubby baby legs!
My DD was ginormous as a baby / toddler then (really massive) once she turned about 6 or 7 she lost it all, she's like a rake now aged 20.

IamEarthymama · 02/12/2020 08:23

I just had a look on eBay and think you might be lucky if you try.

As a childminder I have looked after many small people and most of the babies had chunky legs until they started walking!
