I feel desperately sorry for all the staff there, who must know the risk they've been deliberately exposed to. I hope they get given a fortnight of full pay for isolating themselves -- maybe the fumigation ought to take that long and the place just be patrolled from outside until it can be staffed again without causing danger to them.

Don't worry - POTUS doesn't really know that much of value. By design. And it's a given that you can't give anyone a higher clearance than you have so he can only declassify information which he's been privy to.

If he does actually 'declassify' anything of a serious national security or public safety nature then I seriously think an Article 25 should be invoked. And I have a feeling they just might get the relevant people to sign off on it. Anyone who would do something so dangerous to the entire Country is obviously NOT sane.

But I have a feeling the things he's 'threatening' to declassify are more likely to be things that he thinks of as 'dirty dealings' by other administrations. But that normal people would think of as things involved with saving the environment or protecting the rights of immigrants or the needy.

As I said, I doubt he actually knows enough to be dangerous. OK, he might know a few things we don't. But he won't know how he knows them.

During WW2 no military commanders knew where their intelligence came from. A lot of them only discovered it was from Enigma in the 1970s, for example.

Unfortunately I don't think that's true.

Trump's already caused damage to intelligence operations in other countries. Even if he didn't understand the implications of what he said (and when does he ever?), it was enough to be revealing to people rather smarter and better informed than him.

And in general, I think he has access to the top levels of secure information. WW2 generals may not have known where the Enigma info came from, but Churchill absolutely did and I'm pretty sure Roosevelt did. The POTUS is the head of state not a general.

How the intelligence community, US and friends, have been playing things once they realised just how unreliable he is, is another question.

Truman had to be briefed on the Manhattan project when FDR died - he'd been kept in the dark. (One reason why the VP now sits on National Security Briefings).

IIUC, there is now no chance at all of him being installed president in this cycle by any democratic or legal process. My understanding is that he would need an armed coup, and to end the USA as a democratic country. And although I'm sure he dreams of such things, I don't see that happening.

The real damage now is in the medium and longterm aftermath. He's done such profound damage to the democratic institutions, and been such an effective rabble-rouser, that the madness won't easily go back in the box.

The people funding and steering him won't go away either. Once they've used up this frontman, they'll pick another, or attack via other routes.
