Here it is.
Thanks @BruceandNosh for the title.

And still we persist.

I have followed all these threads but I'm still confused as to how given the USA is supposed to be the beacon for democracy that one person i.e. Mitch McConnell can wield so much power in terms of not allowing bills to be debated never mind voted on - can someone please explain this?

lionheart · 04/12/2020 22:46

No short answer ...

www.legbranch.org/2018-8-1-what-makes-senate-leaders-so-powerful/

'It is the prerogative of the majority leader by long-standing practice to move to proceed to the Senate’s floor business. According to Senate precedent, “motions to proceed to the consideration of bills and resolutions on the calendar are usually made by the majority leader or his designee, who, as spokesman of his party and in consultation with his policy committee, implements and directs the legislative schedule and program.” But there is no explicit provision in the Senate’s rules or precedents stipulating that motions to be proceed can only be made by the leader. In reality, any rank-and-file member, or the minority leader, can make a motion to proceed to a bill or nominee on the Senate floor. They simply choose not to and instead defer to the majority leader to do so.'

That Hamilton parody is priceless. I'm 'ear worming' the 'blah blah blah blah blah' refrain.

I haven't seen much news today so thanks all for the great links! These threads are a 'one stop news shop' when life gets out of hand. It looks like my area may be going on a lockdown within the next few days so I've been 'finishing up' Xmas shopping, thank God for curbside pick up!

I'm so upset I missed the Tapper interview! Hopefully the full interview will be somewhere online!

47 days until eviction day.

@TheNorthWestPawsage

Kellyanne can do one.
Cmon North don't hold back. Tell us how you really feel! 😆

Interesting on McConnell lion

i just wonder if it was ever intended that one man would end up with so much power. To revel in being called the Grim Reaper and to say when Obama got in for the second time... his top priority was to block everything Obama tried to put forward. Over 400 Bills sit on his desk being blocked
Shocking isn't it

uk.reuters.com/article/usa-trump-somalia/trump-to-withdraw-most-troops-from-somalia-as-part-of-global-pullback-idUSKBN28E33X

So Trump is pulling troops out of Somalia and elsewhere. Purely to make life harder for Biden and so he can crow about how he brought troops home and Biden sent them back

Oh and... I'm just seeing the number on cases won and lost for Trump and his election shenanigans

1 - 43

Daca program must reopen for new applications, judge rules

Ignoring all the legal challenges (I think the score is 46 - 1), GOP are still trying to interfere in electoral college vote allocation.
In Pennsylvania, the state legislature tried to wrest control of appointing EC electors (for Trump) despite being certified for Biden. It failed.
Now state Senate members have written to the Members of Congress asking them to vote against accepting the EC result when it is brought before Congress in January. Absolutely shameless.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 05/12/2020 09:43

Trump will be coming out of the WH bunker today to travel to Georgia for the rally this evening.

It's being held in Valdosta which is near the state line with Florida so I expect they'll be plenty of 'fine' people turning up. This is supposedly for him to show support for Loeffler and Perdue in their Senate run off election but we all know that it's going to be a 'Festival of Trump'.

I wonder if the tv networks will show any of it?

Roussette · 05/12/2020 09:51

Many on Twitter said that they are actually going to tune in to this shitshow of Trump's.
Because he is beyond showing support for Loeffler/Perdue (does he care what happens after he's gone? No.)
He just wants to whine, whinge, moan and rally his troops into putting even more money into his fight campaign which means he has to just talk about it being unfair and the election was stolen.
His cultists have already given him $180million, the fools. He is wringing every last cent out of them, riling up his core supporters.
Disgusting.

Mittens030869 · 05/12/2020 10:16

What gets to me is the lily livered Republican Party, many of whom are acknowledging privately that he's lost but daren't put their faces above the parapet. They're tooscared of losing the massive following that voted Republican because of him.

Anon778833 · 05/12/2020 10:36

Yep, there’s the Republican Party. And then there’s Trumpism.

DuncinToffee · 05/12/2020 10:44

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 05/12/2020 11:35

And that's another few tens of thousands of lives Trump has destroyed by withdrawing the troops from Somalia. Let's hope the UN can pick up and carry the load.

Roussette · 05/12/2020 13:00

Oh yes. Trump is trying to kneecap the incoming Administration.

On Michael Spicer... I love love love him, and that was hilarious!

Fuck 'em.

You dance with the devil, you pay the price.

giletrouge · 05/12/2020 15:50

I really think now that Trump is clinically insane as well as dangerous and all the rest. The way he drones on and on in the face of reality. He's either massively capable of deception for his own disruptive ends or if he really believes himself he's completely insane.
Either way immensely worrying because of all the people with loose holds on reality that he drags along with him.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 05/12/2020 16:20

As well as all the deaths he is causing.

Mittens030869 · 05/12/2020 16:41

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime Yes, Fauci warned that there could be another 250k Covid deaths between now and Inauguration Day, as a direct result of Trump's neglect of the pandemic and encouraging his supporters to ignore social distancing and mask wearing.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 05/12/2020 18:04

I was thinking of the Kurds, the Afghans and the Somalis who have died and will die because his precipitate running away from allies in those countries leaves them in the lurch, and the people who were being protected without protectors against the terrorists who want to kill them.

But yes, the Covid deaths as well. It's just a shame those can't all be among his non-mask-wearing cult followers, instead of health workers, shop-keepers, and other innocents who have not deserved it.
