Bloody Elf turns up in a balloon now

I know IABU and a curmudgeon but why does everything have to be such an exhibition at Christmas? Elves can't just appear this year they have to float from Lapland in a balloon with a present Confused I know, I know if you don't like it don't do it. That's fine but I do feel sorry for the kids whose parents don't have £15 to spend on an elf balloon and then a present on top just because it's the first of December. I thought this year might make us all step back and maybe consider a simpler celebration of Christmas but no, the social media onslaught of who can be the most ostentatious Christmas fanatic is worse than ever. I hate it.

The one person posting fucking elf pictures on my FB this morning all "oh look who's back, such fun and jolly japes" shite is the same one person on my FB who is a MLM bot.

I bet if you drew a Venn diagram of MLM people and Elf people, the overlap would be considerable.

AlwaysLatte · 01/12/2020 15:34

Also our f doesn't spy - it's a mischievous elf who got the sack from Father Christmas for being naughty and he does tricks every night. The kids love it even though they know it's just a bit of fun.

Fairyliz · 01/12/2020 15:35

Am I a saddo? I’m 60 and I want an elf now, it was never a thing when my children were young Blush

Unfollow/snooze her if she pisses you off so much. It’s not hard.

Mrsjayy · 01/12/2020 15:36

Friend of mine sent balloon elves for her grandchildren because she can't see them, this year has been shite let people do what they want .they are not hurting anybody.

HigherFurtherFasterBaby · 01/12/2020 15:36

No it fucking doesn't, we don't even have one here. Bollocks to that.

unchienandalusia · 01/12/2020 15:36

@TheKeatingFive the point of Christmas.

No MLM here either so wrong again!
TheKeatingFive · 01/12/2020 15:38

the point of Christmas.

Well in our house, the point of Christmas is to have fun and celebrate with the people you love.

The elf fits that pretty well, so ...

I bet it wouldn't.
I know lots of elf people and none of them are mlm bots.

formerbabe · 01/12/2020 15:40

- it’s one of the cheapest Xmas activities you can do

- it’s quite the opposite of consumerism when the joy of it comes from the jokes not any material item

Actually it's true...it's really cheap. The joy it brings my dd is immeasurable

squeekums · 01/12/2020 15:41

So much elf hate
Our have taken over the nerf gun tonight, shooting bonbons about
Dd loves the fun of finding what they get up too, harmless fun and hurts no one

TheKeatingFive · 01/12/2020 15:43

It’s classic confirmation bias isn’t it?

People decide that those who do the elf are MLM bots/renters/SM slaves/insert any other snobbish criteria you like and that’s all they see, because that’s all they’re looking for.

PrincessNutNut · 01/12/2020 15:43

@TheKeatingFive

Its difficult enough to say no to 4 and 5 year olds and there were a few parents who felt they HAD to do it otherwise their child would somehow be missing out/ stand out.

Why is this always an argument wheeled out against the elf, but never foreign holidays, expensive days out, fancy tech, shiny bikes, etc, etc?

And honestly, in its simplest form it’s very little expense or effort, so I don’t feel too sorry for those who, for some reason, can’t say no.

Because we don't shame things that are ostensibly middle class.

(I know you know that!)

Why on earth do people get so angry and moralistic about this stuff? Do it, don't do it, like it, dislike it, but why all this sputtering outrage about how a bit of elf fun for people who enjoy it is an actual mark of someone's moral character?

catnoir1 · 01/12/2020 15:44

I did this last year and my kids loved it. Dd played with the balloon eldest loved the elf and his antics.

Didn't bother this year with it. One year was enough.

TheKeatingFive · 01/12/2020 15:44

Well of course Wink

popshops · 01/12/2020 15:46

@dancingindungarees

We're poor and on benefits. Sadly our goat ate the balloon this morning and quite possibly the elf to as he's missing. Just awful.
At least he didn't eat your mumsnet chicken.

You’ll have to console yourself with your enormous flatscreen tv that’s probably bigger than your actual house.

NotGenerationAlpha · 01/12/2020 15:53

I have an elf. DH reminded me of it yesterday. Just before we went to sleep. We stuffed her in a Tupperware box. Kids says everyone has an elf at school. You don’t have to be over the top.

doris9034 · 01/12/2020 15:59

@LobsterRavioli
I rent - i don't have an elf

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 01/12/2020 16:02

I'll just leave this here..

Sobeyondthehills · 01/12/2020 16:03

Our elf turned up last night, as I was trying to sneak him in the room, DS woke up and caught me. He is 8, so probably the last year we have of him believing.

Although if I had known, I would never have started the damn thing

malificent7 · 01/12/2020 16:06

Why does class have to come into VERYTHING? If kids love it, why not. It has been a shite year....do we really need to over analyse this too?
Do you think kids love a tasteful Waitrose style Christmas? Do they fuck...they live for this tat!
