Heavy Schoolbags. Does anyone use a trolleybag?

Dd is in year 8 and walks to school but her bag is just so heavy. With Covid they are not using their lockers so having to carry this load around all day as well. When I suggested a trolleybag she wrinkled her nose and said that nobody uses one. Does anyone's son or daughter use a trolleybag for school and if so can I ask which one? Thank you.

A girl at my school was picked on terribly for having a 'granny' bag

BefuddledPerson · 30/11/2020 21:30

that all adds up to a lot of weight to be carrying about all day for the cast majority of the day they are not carrying it, as they are sitting in class.

I think school would take a dim view of a wheelie case wouldn't that? Surely other kids will fall over it?

For a mere 560 quid, you could be the coolest kid in school www.airwheel.net/home/product/sr5

Fuck no. Even if your dc has the confidence and individualism to carry it off with their friends and fellow pupils, they'd still need to be willing to listen to the laughter and insults from any other teen they cross paths with.

Being individual and alternative is a good thing, but if you have the ability to stand out, it has to be something you decided to do all by yourself, if your parents are suggesting you do this unique thing you haven't got the balls to carry it off. Especially if that unique thing isn't something remotely trend setting or original, and is indeed something everyone associates with their grandparents or great grandparents generation.

I'm not being funny but when I was at high school we had 6 lessons a day, plus usually an extracurricular at either lunch or after school, and we never had lockers, so I had to carry everything round with me. Either a proper backpack (not a little girly fashionable bag) or a bigger bag like a tote bag but stronger is needed, rather than the handbags that I see so many girls carrying.

It's not like they're carrying them round all day. Most of the day they'll be on the floor.

Are you me OP. Dd rucksack is well made but with all the stuff they have to take must be 12 kilos. She pointblank refused a wheelie case when I suggested it.

GlowingOrb · 30/11/2020 22:23

They are banned at our school. They were all the rage a few years back but were reported to be a tripping hazard in crowded halls.

shesellsseashells99 · 30/11/2020 22:26

This tickled me!
Sorry OP, I just can't imagine any teenager is going to want to push a trolley to school

SomelikeitHoth · 30/11/2020 22:40

On Monday DS has in his backpack , a pair of adult sized school shoes , uniform jumper, trousers and polo top. Pencil case, lunch , a litre of water (water fountains are taped off) books. It weighs a ton. Extra on Fridays for climbing he also has to carry his climbing shoes and harness

Wildheartsease · 19/09/2021 22:53

I'm trying to imagine where these trolleys would fit in our classrooms. It can be tricky to squeeze in enough desks and chairs!

Skysblue · 19/09/2021 23:41

It’s a brilliant idea OP, so of course no one at school will do it. Barristers use wheeled briefcases btw.

You could perhaps try it and if people are rude go back to rucksack - but do leave it completely up to her. At my school it was social death to have your rucksack on both shoulders even though carrying it on one shoulder gave us backache 🤷‍♀️

Have you seen the Inbetweeners? The first episode has a lot of stuff about how the new kid is instantly uncool because he has a briefcase not a rucksack… He’s called ‘breifcase’ as an insult for years…

I’m in the USA (west coast). Loads of kids use them here at our local school and you can get some really nice designs, sporty looking ones with lots of pockets etc. When I first moved to the states I remember feeling really surprised at how popular the wheelie bags are here for school, just because it’s clearly a good idea for teens backs not to carry 5 text books around daily, and teens never seem to do a sensible thing usually. Maybe it’ll catch on over there sometime?

This thread is al no ost a year old but the suggestion that she should take a trolley bag has tickled me. Some of the teachers would likely make fun of her.

Backpack and if that's too heavy, put the heavy stuff into a nice carrier bag or sports bag / book bag. Something she can carry in her hands.

In my day all the girls had Jane Norman bags. Now I suppose it would be Selfridges?

Cardboardboxingring · 20/09/2021 03:20

The number of people in this thread saying 'back in my day we walked ten miles uphill both ways in the snow to get to school, I carried three rucksacks, my little brother, and a goat every day and had no issue with it' Hmm yes the OP is being precious for caring about her child's development! It would be difficult for her socially but honestly it's an issue I think is worth pressing. For years at school I had to carry so many books that I actually broke several bags and now I have chronic back problems! You are right to be concerned, OP. I'm mid-20s and walking with a cane, I wish my mum had bought me a trolley bag ten years ago.
