Heavy Schoolbags. Does anyone use a trolleybag?

Dd is in year 8 and walks to school but her bag is just so heavy. With Covid they are not using their lockers so having to carry this load around all day as well. When I suggested a trolleybag she wrinkled her nose and said that nobody uses one. Does anyone's son or daughter use a trolleybag for school and if so can I ask which one? Thank you.

I'm a bit out of touch with school politics, but if there's not at least 40 percent of other pupils in her school that also use a trolley bag, I wouldn't recommend it.

Joeblack066 · 30/11/2020 13:08

This has been the case forever tbh. My kids’ school didn’t have lockers, or cloakrooms, so it was books, PE kit, cooking stuff, coat l, all day every day. Awful. My DD is 23 now, but I clearly remember how mortified she was when her Grandma suggested a trolley!

sleepwhenidie · 30/11/2020 13:10

My DD (y8) made me buy one for her! She is quite small and was getting bad pains in her neck from her heavy bag and was fed up. She quite likes being a geek though and is quite a 'cat who walks by herself' type so doesn't care what others think. Its been received with some amusement and some admiration by school mates as far as I can tell - they laugh about how they can always hear her coming! She tells me others are planning on getting one too.

PenfoldPenny · 30/11/2020 13:14

I do sometimes use one as an adult but a trolley for school, no of course not!!!

We didnt have lockers at school but we all managed in carrying our stuff all day long.

Givemeabreak88 · 30/11/2020 13:19

Just no 😂

ThanksItHasPockets · 30/11/2020 13:19

Sorry OP but no. Is she definitely just taking the bare minimum for the day? Heavy trolley-bags would cause absolute chaos on the stairs.

SherryPalmer · 30/11/2020 13:23

I’m not in the U.K. but some primary kids use wheeled bags here. They’re not actually meant to be very good for the back though.

diddl · 30/11/2020 13:23

All the adults on here laughing & saying "no, just no".

Well no wonder some kids would be bullying little shits about it!

Ginfordinner · 30/11/2020 13:24

@OverTheRainbow88

Some elderly teachers do!!!
😒
Emmelina · 30/11/2020 13:24

It’s a FANTASTIC idea for all kinds of reasons - the weight on the shoulders, the durability etc., but it would definitely be social suicide! Sorry!
If the straps of her current backpack are cutting in, it’s worth looking for another fashionable backpack she agrees with with nice chunky padded straps.

Golfinches · 30/11/2020 13:25

A girl when I was in school did that. She was ridiculed (it was also pink leapord print)Confused

AgentJohnson · 30/11/2020 13:25

I totally understand your logic but..... it would be social suicide.

DD’s bag is 15 kgs! Thankfully she cycles to school.

Icecreamsoda99 · 30/11/2020 13:31

No! But also when I was at school we lugged everything around with us anyway as never enough time between lessons to go and get things from the lockers.

EmeraldShamrock · 30/11/2020 13:33

Every day is a learning day on Mnet I'd never have believed a wheeled backpack is social suicide until today.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 30/11/2020 13:34

I’ve never seen a child use a trolleybag. They all seem to cope.

Ifailed · 30/11/2020 13:34

Why not get her one of these?

Do you mean she was bullied?
Inthemuckheap · 30/11/2020 13:37

Proper backpacks are the only solution. Or maybe a Trunky Grin

emeraldcity2000 · 30/11/2020 13:38

Would it be social suicide? Op, what is the social status of your dd? Would she get picked on or would others look at her and think it's a good idea?
I would have been mercilessly laughed out of school but there were some girls who I think would have got away with it....

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 30/11/2020 13:38

I remember definitely in the earlier years at my school lots of people had bags with waist straps. I think the parents in my year formed an alliance against flimsy rucksacks, and put in a bulk order from a school bag supplier!

LucyLocketsPocket · 30/11/2020 13:41

My daughter actually toppled over at the end of last half term because her bag was so heavy with books!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 30/11/2020 13:43

This is the one a lot of us had.

DF still uses it to bring back shopping on his bike, so it's still going strong after about 20 years. Grin

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 30/11/2020 13:44

Are you always this embarrassing op? Grin

Fluffybutter · 30/11/2020 13:45

Primary schoolers in Europe and the US sometimes use them but never seen a teenager !

oakleaffy · 30/11/2020 13:47

No way!
It would be seriously uncool, like a granny shopping trolley.

As PP have said, wide straps on rucksacks help.
Textbooks are heavy, but unless everyone has a shopping trolley, it would look cringe.
As a young student
, anyway.
