We always have a real tree. I really don't like artificial ones, but each to their own. I've seen loads of people putting decorations up early this year which I totally get! I'm going to put a few lights up soon. Mainly people are using artificial trees but I've seen some real trees. I'm thinking the can possibly last?

We normally put our tree up around 10 day maybe 2 weeks before Christmas and although we have a water bath but in the holder it's ver dry by the time it comes down! So am I doing it wrong? I've gad real trees all my life and I'm 35. Or are the people I'm seeing with real trees up actually novices who don't know what they're doing?

YABU = it will be fine from now till Christmas
YANBU = it will die/shed before Christmas

This is why we’ve not got ours up yet. It inevitably gets a bit droopy towards throwing out time and I’m constantly putting the baubles back on, I don’t want that happening before Christmas.

CovidPostingName · 29/11/2020 09:40

They need at least 2litres of water a day, and probably more in a very warm house. Almost no one waters their real tree enough.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/11/2020 09:42

Our real tree is currently settling before we decorate it. Our experience is they last 5-6 weeks if watered regularly.

Normandy144 · 29/11/2020 09:42

Yanbu a real.tree up this weekend will be dead by Christmas.

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 29/11/2020 09:43

We have a fake one this year for this reason

Littlemissnutcracker · 29/11/2020 09:45

I'm thinking of buying a real tree and a resoirvoir holder. Would that help. Lidl had beautiful trees last night.

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 29/11/2020 09:45

I put a real one up 1st Dec last year and it was still perfectly fine by Christmas Day. We have a stand where you can add water which I did daily.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/11/2020 09:47

We always get ours from IKEA as close as possible to 1st December. It always lasts past Christmas. Even with an aritifical tree it comes down a day or two after Boxing Day. Our real trees always last til then at least.

We have this type of stand and I still think it gets droopy!

My family is German, so we put up our tree on Christmas Eve, with the expectation of it lasting until 6 January (some German traditions keep it up until 2 February). We use real candles, so a well hydrated tree is a lot safer than a dry one! This year, because we're all in different countries and can't get together, I've bought a 4' potted tree. I picked it up yesterday, because I saw how fast people were buying up trees, and I'm worried about not getting a nice one if I wait until the 23rd to buy it. Later today, I'm going to re-pot it in a nice big pot, and it will stay outside doing tree things until it's time to bring it in. So hopefully it will stay fresh for the duration!

pinfloy · 29/11/2020 09:49

It will depend partly on the species and partly how long it's already been cut for before purchase.

Nordman fir remain quite green, they are a bit of a fire hazard though

olderthanyouthink · 29/11/2020 09:50

Also depends how fresh the tree was, my parents had one that they got on the day it arrived at the garden Centre and it looked amazing after xmas day and it was a shame to get rid of it. Also theirs is in a big pot of water, when I moved out I hunted down the same thing (well the first year I did a normal bucket weighted with stones and filled with water, small studio = small tree)

showmethegin · 29/11/2020 09:50

We get ours on the 1st December and it always lasts until we take it down early jan. we do water it though and we only ever buy a Nordman fir which hold their needles really well.

We have a holder with room for a bit of water maybe around 2 liters. But previously I've found the tree isn't 'drinking' that per day. So I'm not sure how can I water it more if its got water but not drinking it?

I'm not sure I expect you to know this!

We buy ours freshly cut from a farm in the first week of December, keep it up past New Year and just keep topping up the water in the stand. It’s always been fine! I’d absolutely never have an artificial tree - I’d prefer no tree at all!

pinfloy · 29/11/2020 09:51

All bets are off this year, but normally by the 23rd you can get nice trees very cheap or free. We put ours up on Christmas eve too.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/11/2020 09:52

OP do you saw off the bottom inch or two when you buy it? Before putting it into the holder.

TheFluffiestCat · 29/11/2020 09:52

We usually get it on the first weekend of December, but we've gone for it a week earlier this year. I'm glad we did, because everyone else is, so we could have been struggling to get a good one if we'd waited. The guy at the Christmas tree farm said they'd had queues down into the village in the morning. We feed it vodka and lemonade, which I think I read on here a few years ago, and it lasts until Christmas although it's ready to go by New Year's Day.

megletthesecond · 29/11/2020 09:52

Yanbu.
We have two dinky living trees in pots. They aren't coming in for at least a fortnight.

CoronaIsWatching · 29/11/2020 09:53

You can buy it today but keep it outside standing in water for a week then put it up next weekend

Br1ll1ant · 29/11/2020 09:53

Water it regularly and add lemonade and ours is always mostly fine (if a little droopy!) from the first weekend in December til 12th night. You need to saw off the bottom when you get it and stick it in a bucket of water for a couple of days before you bring it inside too. Works for us anyway!

Pumpertrumper · 29/11/2020 09:53

We’ve put our real tree up and it’s making us happy.

Worst case we’ll replace before Christmas. I can live with slightly droopy though!

Misopasta · 29/11/2020 09:59

I always put up my real tree on or around the 1st. It always lasts until Christmas, I just saw off the end and give it plenty of water, nothing special.

Hiddennameforever · 29/11/2020 10:02

All my childhood and up to 25 yrs old when I lived with my family we had real tree.
I’m from different country originally in Europe so we always put tree up morning on 24th December. It never ever occurred to do it even one day earlier.
I remember my friend’s family- they always put tree up in the afternoon on 23rd of Dec and we all thought how weird that is!
However since I living in the UK I put artificial tree up on first advent week.
I can’t imagine any later..
