To day if you put a real tree up now it will be dead by Christmas?

We always have a real tree. I really don't like artificial ones, but each to their own. I've seen loads of people putting decorations up early this year which I totally get! I'm going to put a few lights up soon. Mainly people are using artificial trees but I've seen some real trees. I'm thinking the can possibly last?

We normally put our tree up around 10 day maybe 2 weeks before Christmas and although we have a water bath but in the holder it's ver dry by the time it comes down! So am I doing it wrong? I've gad real trees all my life and I'm 35. Or are the people I'm seeing with real trees up actually novices who don't know what they're doing?

YABU = it will be fine from now till Christmas
YANBU = it will die/shed before Christmas

We have a holder with room for a bit of water maybe around 2 liters. But previously I've found the tree isn't 'drinking' that per day. So I'm not sure how can I water it more if its got water but not drinking it?

When you get it home do you cut a small bit off the bottom so it has a fresh cut? I read they are more able to take up water then.

Felyne · 29/11/2020 16:09

Depends where you get it from. We always get our tree the first weekend of December from a farm up the road. It is dying by the first week of January (daughter likes to still have it for her birthday) but is fine at Christmas.
This year we got it yesterday. It will still be alive by Christmas. Probably dead by DD's birthday but it's unlikely anyone will be seeing it this year as I bet we will still be in Tier 2...

bluerad · 29/11/2020 16:22

We usually get our tree blocked - they shape the end and put it on a large wooden base so you don't have to worry about fixing it on a stand. It also means that you can't water it but we've never had a problem. Usually buy mid December and it's collected by the hospice van end of first or second week in Jan.

ShinyGreenElephant · 29/11/2020 16:28

Well I have a real tree every year and have never put it in water!! No wonder they always die within a couple of weeks! My daughters birthday is mid December so we never put the tree up until after that, and it always looks droopy by new years, I've always wondered how people keep them going throughout December- now I know!

@Normandy144

Yanbu a real.tree up this weekend will be dead by Christmas.
Not if you buy from a decent supplier and look after it, make sure you put water in it and don't have it in a very hot room.
nemeton · 29/11/2020 16:34

We always have real trees, usually get one the second week of December, and pull it down on the 6th.
I am worried about being able to dispose of it this year, as I don't know if the tip is open as we'll be in tier three from Wednesday Confused

We have no outside space to put the tree, I usually take it straight to the tip once it's stripped bare.

I'd really like to have one in a pot, but as there's no outdoor space, and we're on the third floor...it's not really a goer.

ghostyslovesheets · 29/11/2020 16:35

always have real - Nordman - in a water pot, topped up daily and away from direct heat - usually goes up 2 weeks before and lasts well - am putting it up next weekend (DD3's birthday - trying to cheer things up as T3 so totally locked down) and I think it will last till NY

NeverHadANickname · 29/11/2020 16:37

We always get ours now and still looks good by new year.

ellentree · 29/11/2020 16:42

We put ours up on the 24th nov last year as we had to have an early Christmas celebration - it was totally fine when we took it down on New Year's Day!

We cut the bottom off, water it a lot with water and lemonade, it's by a window rather than a radiator and we have never had an issue. Normally get it first weekend in December. Will be getting it on the 1st this year.

Stripesnomore · 29/11/2020 16:43

It really depends where you get the tree from and how long it has been standing about before you buy it.

It makes me feel a bit sad to hear that people are taking trees down straight after Boxing Day. What happened to the 12 days of Christmas?

Intothesheepfold · 29/11/2020 16:43

We always put up our Nordmann on the 19th, so relatively late, but it means it's fine for NY celebrations etc. (We live in a country where NY is almost more important than Christmas.) It comes in a wooden cross, so we've never watered it, didn't know you should tbh! Ours is usually pretty tall, how do you get it to balance and stay upright with the base of the trunk in a bucket?

Flaunch · 29/11/2020 16:49

I quite often have 2 real trees, one from
The beginning of December and then a replacement one when the ships are selling them off for a couple of quid.

Mines up already. I need the twinkles this year.

RiddledWithAnger · 29/11/2020 16:55

We only buy Nordman Firs. It won't be dead by Christmas. Every year we have this discussion and every year, the bloody thing keeps all of its needles and is green the whole way through January when put it in the garden to be chopped up. In fact, one year we didn't get round to disposing of it until February. It still had all its needles but they went brown.

I water it every few days, it doesn't need 2L of water.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 29/11/2020 16:58

Saw off a few inches the drill a hole in the centre about an inch, water every day and it'll be fine.

soberfabulous · 29/11/2020 16:59

We get our nordman every year on December 2nd. It is never dead by Christmas.

Drinks jugs of water each day and the house smells like a beautiful Christmas dream for a month!

DappledThings · 29/11/2020 17:00

We usually put ours up first weekend in December. Lasts till 12th night quite happily. We do water it a good amount.

Pipandmum · 29/11/2020 17:01

When do you think they harvest the trees? Most will have been cut throughout November if not earlier and survive because they are outside. Get a low drop one like a Nordmann fir- it should last until Jan 6.
I got both of mine this weekend, one is outside still and I won't decorate until the 1st, but have no doubts they will survive. I normally get them first weekend in Dec but this year there seems to be a rush on (there were at least four other families looking when we were, and this is an out of the way small farm).

CallmeAngelina · 29/11/2020 17:02

Erm, aren't they already dead? Assuming there are no roots on it?
It's effectively planting a broom handle, isn't it?

That said, the place where we get ours every year always tell us to do x, y and z to deter it dropping and last longer, but they are always fab right up until 12th night. We won't put it up until next weekend, however, and that is a week earlier than I normally would.

soberfabulous · 29/11/2020 17:03

intothesheepfold it doesn't wiggle around in a bucket, you get a fabulous gadget that holds them up sturdily and allows water to be in the base.

To day if you put a real tree up now it will be dead by Christmas?
movingonup20 · 29/11/2020 17:06

Fake one here, real one won't last until January in my experience

80sColourfulChristmas · 29/11/2020 17:09

@CovidPostingName

They need at least 2litres of water a day, and probably more in a very warm house. Almost no one waters their real tree enough.
This is incorrect. We have a large, thick & bushy and very full Premium Nordmann Fir which we put up 6 days ago. It has a 4 litre tank in the stand and I've just checked it now and it's only 2 thirds gone...
80sColourfulChristmas · 29/11/2020 17:10

@Normandy144

Yanbu a real.tree up this weekend will be dead by Christmas.
I put mine up last week as we always do that same weekend every year and none have ever died on us. Ours is thriving, as expected
malificent7 · 29/11/2020 17:10

Last year we went to a farm to get ours cut on first week of December....it lasted till new year...hardly any shedding!

LeSquigh · 29/11/2020 17:11

We always have a real tree and we have never watered them. They are always fine way past Xmas.

malificent7 · 29/11/2020 17:12

I rwcommend going to a farm, selecting your tree while its growing in the forest and they will cut it for you there and then...fresh as a daisy.
