Baby bathing

dottiedaisee · 28/11/2020 22:59

Tonight my daughter bathed her 11 month old and is a very vigilant caring mum. She literally stopped watching her for seconds ie turned her back and her baby was underwater and not even attempting to move ....just thought I would warn everyone how vulnerable babies are !! 💕

Erm I think you are misinterpreting the concern for sarcasm. You didn't actually mention that baby was fine so you'll obviously get asked about that.
You did mention that baby made no attempt to move so Pps are asking for more information

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/11/2020 00:08

If the baby was underwater and not moving then the advice re secondary drowning above is bang on. Baby should be checked out by a doctor.

Pinkflipflop85 · 29/11/2020 00:09

She was standing in the doorway?! Doesnt sound particularly careful or vigilant at all.

Ringading7 · 29/11/2020 00:21

What on earth was she doing standing in the doorway to begin with?

Is this thread real?

LunchBoxPolice · 29/11/2020 00:22

and yes she is a brilliant, amazing Mummy
No she is negligent. Especially if she doesn’t get the baby checked over by a doctor after what happened.

KatieGGGG · 29/11/2020 00:26

If this post is even real then it needs to be a lesson to your daughter not to be in the doorway of a bathroom with her baby in the bath, not a lesson for everyone else like you’re pitching?

AmelieTaylor · 29/11/2020 00:30

@Babyfg

Her baby didn't attempt to move at 11 months old? Was she conscious?
That's why even very shallow water is dangerous!!
dottiedaisee · 29/11/2020 00:31

So I started this post trying to be helpful and flag up a hazard . Am struggling with how anyone could be so angry with the world to take offence with my friendly advice ...sorry to all concerned!!

mumduty · 29/11/2020 00:33

Thank you op, people do need to hear this as they think couple of minutes is ok when it actually takes a second.

ColdNovemberNights · 29/11/2020 00:33

Secondary drowning is actually a thing!

Look it up!!!

Tell your daughter to take her to hospital now!
If she went under the water, the risk of secondary drowning is HUGE

^^this. Secondary drowning is not uncommon & she should take the baby to get checked out.
KatieGGGG · 29/11/2020 00:36

Well yes, if you leave a baby in a bath unattended that’s a hazard. I think most people know that though and your daughter does now? Hopefully?

angieloumc · 29/11/2020 00:41

Definitely need to have baby checked out as pp's suggest.

alexdgr8 · 29/11/2020 00:46

why do people seem not to use baby baths now, ie a smaller baby-sized plastic bath that you can put inside the tub.
less likelihood of the baby slipping under or twisting into the water.

Sh05 · 29/11/2020 01:04

@alexdgr8
I stopped using the smaller one in the main tub once she could pull herself up. She started trying to climb out once she could crawl. But that said since her excema has flared up again I've stopped filling the tub so often and just give her a gentle shower down.
@dottiedaisee Please op instruct your daughter to get baby checked by the professionals.

she is absolutely obsessed with keeping her baby safe

Aye right, sure she is.
Thanks for the laugh.

Liverbird77 · 29/11/2020 05:30

I don't bath my baby and toddler. It is too risky in my opinion, as well as being a waste of water!
They get showered down with the hose attachment. Both are used to it and absolutely fine about it. Baby lies down and toddler usually stands up. I wash them separately. It's quick, efficient and much safer.

What a shame, bath time with a baby can be a really gorgeous experience for both of you and help the baby become more confident in water
Gobbycop · 29/11/2020 07:57

Captain Obvious.

Hasn't this been known about since babies and baths were invented?

I'm glad the kid is fine so that's one good thing.

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 29/11/2020 08:03

Your "daughter" doesn't sound obsessed with safety at all. I thought you meant she literally turned her head away for a second or something. Who leaves the room, even momentarily, with a baby in the bath?!

But so joyless! Bathtime is such a lovely time, toys and splashing and playing with water, it's also so important for building confidence for swimming later on.

Because to most people it’s common sense.
AnneLovesGilbert · 29/11/2020 09:06

Vigilant parents plan ahead and get towels nearby to avoid this sort of potentially very dangerous oversight. No excuse at all for leaving the room with an 11 month old in the bath.

3WildOnes · 29/11/2020 09:12

My baby has slipped under the water before and was thrashing around like mad. It sounds like baby was possibly under the water for longer than a second.

Yeah, this is one of those "take baby to A&E immediately" things, rather than a "post on Mumsnet" thing.

Sometimes i fucking hate this site - you get snapshots of children who are at huge risk, being neglected or abused or just failed by their parents, and you can do nothing. It keeps me up at night sometimes.
