How much do you think is fair? I’m thinking about 4 weeks wages as a lump sum in addition to usual payment. What to you all think is reasonable? Thank you :)

I don’t. And obviously people are free to tip or not tip whoever they want, it’s just my observation on the way threads about tipping certain jobs seem to go.

We haven’t seen our cleaner since March. She’s been claiming the government self employed furlough money when she can but we haven’t been pay her. Had I listened to some here and paid her in full for all the time she hadn’t come I’d be down nearly £2500 by now. We normally give her a weeks pay and a bottle of wine but come the new year we’ll be looking for a new cleaner.

Hard to justify that a cleaner is necessary really, desirable yes but unlike a nanny not crucial.

So I can’t let my Mum into my house but I could have a cleaner come in who has been in and out of multiple homes and mixing with a lot of people, just evaluate the risk factor there....just crazy.

It's not necessary for me to have a cleaner. It is however necessary for my cleaner to come into my house in order to do her work. That's what the necessary means. Same as I could go to my office if I couldn't do my job from home.

If my mum came to my house, we'd sit in the same room for a few hours, pass biscuits and cake back and forth and probably say fuck it and have a hug. When my cleaner comes, we say hello at a distance, I take the baby out for a walk, DH shuts himself in the study. Then she leaves with her wage which she uses for rent, food, clothes etc. Otherwise she'd be on benefits or furlough, she pays tax, she keeps other businesses going with her purchases. Not the same thing at all.

2 weeks pay and a present.

Unlike teachers cleaners are mostly self employed, earn NMW, don't get holidays or sick pay and are in the perfect position to spread your darkest secrets around the town.

Oysterbabe · 30/11/2020 11:13

Cleaners don't earn NMW here, you won't find one for less than £12 an hour, most are more. That said I will pay mine a bonus (and also buy teacher gifts if that's relevant)

CountFosco · 30/11/2020 12:08

You might pay £12 an hour for when she's with you but once you factor in her expenses and travelling time is it still more than NMW?

I am my cleaner's employer and can choose to give her a Christmas bonus if I want. However, I am not my children's teacher's employer. School has asked us to buy books for the school this year and we'll probably do that. But that's for the children.

OchonAgusOchonO · 30/11/2020 12:16

My last cleaner, I used to give her an extra €20 on top of the €65 I paid (she came for 5 hours every fortnight). She wasn't great and I did think she could get what she did finished much quicker than 5 hours.

My current cleaner will be getting an extra week's pay and a little hamper of goodies. She comes on a monday so I will tell her not to come the monday after christmas and will also pay her for that as it's me cancelling, not her. She's amazing though. She comes for 5 hours but gets amazing work done in that time

Most stupid comment. She pays her own national insurance, tax, business expenses.....
towers14 · 30/11/2020 18:38

Cleaner here, I'd be blown away & very grateful with 4 weeks extra. I have 1 that pays an extra week and a few that buy quite expensive presents. Mostly wine from the rest. All of which I really appreciate.

boredasf · 30/11/2020 23:37

Well generally cleaners will be on NMW. But that's not really the point, it's standard in many jobs to get a Christmas bonus so why should cleaners be any different?

It's not standard at all. You think people on casual earnings in shops etc are all getting Christmas bonuses? Not every business owner is the same religion or nationality and even celebrates Christmas. MN is another planet honestly.

Ibizafun · 01/12/2020 00:05

Our cleaner does 7 hours twice a week and I give her a week’s money. We were her only clients who paid her right through lockdown.

@Molly499

Because they have actually taken the time to read the rules

I agree. I've still not had anyone in my house since February/March!
