How much do you think is fair? I’m thinking about 4 weeks wages as a lump sum in addition to usual payment. What to you all think is reasonable? Thank you :)

This thread is making me feel awful as I was just thinking a box of chocolates. For us having a cleaner involves going without other things as we value the cleaning more but £50 is more than I’m spending on my mum, stepdad, sister and brother in law put together

Tigger03 · 28/11/2020 22:35

planning on giving £100 (we pay £36 once a fortnight normally).

We can afford it and our cleaner is brilliant, and she’s had a really tough couple of months with self isolation due to her son having Covid.

Dimsummummy · 28/11/2020 22:40

I’m a cleaner ( a bloody good one too! Not being ostentatious I’ve just worked in many situations and with many other cleaners/clients in
Many settings). Honestly, you’d reap the reward of a great tip through extra time spent etc as I’d want to repay.. but, I honestly appreciate a personal message just as much 😊

ouchmyfeet · 28/11/2020 22:52

I'll give mine what I pay the agency for a week's cleaning. I guess they take a fair chunk of that so it should come in at more than a week's salary.

byvirtue · 28/11/2020 22:55

Mines getting a cashmere jumper, she spotted one of mine and asked if I could get her one and take it out of her pay. She’s fab so happy to give it to her for Christmas.

1stMrsF · 28/11/2020 22:58

When I've employed direct I've given an extra week at Christmas and paid a week while we were away on holiday (and no cleaning while we were away) in the summer, plus a small gift eg a bottle or chocs. Last few years have not given a Christmas bonus as the cleaning business owners were cleaning for us (card and gift only).

EmpressoftheMundane · 28/11/2020 23:11

We give £50 in a card.

aModernClassic · 28/11/2020 23:19

I think it depends on how much you pay each week. But for me, four weeks money is £240. I'm generous to my cleaner, but that's too much. I usually give her a nice hamper or something for around £100.
I know she wouldn't accept four weeks pay either, as she'd be too embarrassed to accept it.

Molly499 · 28/11/2020 23:23

How is anyone managing to have a cleaner? I have not had mine come in since March. If you are not supposed to have anyone in your home that does not live with you how is it possible?

MrsEricBana · 28/11/2020 23:32

They are working and can't work from home. Like having boiler engineer in really.

Dimsummummy · 28/11/2020 23:47

@Molly499 it’s pretty straight forward that a Cleaner’s place of work is their client’s home?

Molly499 · 28/11/2020 23:53

It is not straightforward at all, a cleaners place of work may be your home but they are not allowed to enter your home for any reason if they don’t live there.

MummytoCSJH · 28/11/2020 23:58

@Molly499 I don't know where you've heard thst but you're completely wrong. They can't work from home and can only work in their clients home, so they are allowed to be there, just like tradespeople.

MummytoCSJH · 29/11/2020 00:01

Here you go: www.gov.uk/guidance/new-national-restrictions-from-5-november#going-to-work

It's there in section 6 - 'Where it is necessary for you to work in other people’s homes - for example, for nannies, cleaners or tradespeople - you can do so.'

TheSmallAssassin · 29/11/2020 00:12

I'm thinking about buying a bottle of wine or some chocolates or something, but I wouldn't give cash (especially not a week's money or more!), it seems really odd. My cleaner has her own business and employs someone to work with her, so it seems a bit much to be giving her a Christmas bonus, especially as we don't get one!

Pipandmum · 29/11/2020 00:24

@Molly499 cleaners can work in your home (as most work in a residential setting) as can childcare. It specifically names cleaners. Tradesmen can too - in fact I have someone who works for me and I work from home so she comes here too (though we did limit it to essential days only).
I give my cleaner slightly less than a weeks wages for Christmas - I lost alot more of my income during the lockdown than she did (she has another job in a retail and was furloughed).
I don't know anyone who would get a months wages as a Christmas bonus - lucky them!

HmmHmmHmm

Because they have actually taken the time to read the rules

SillyOldMummy · 29/11/2020 01:02

We did one week's pay and a card and wine. Value about £65.

I used to pay her during her annual two weeks holiday as a goodwill gesture too, which she loved.

She was THE best cleaner. I'm a SAHM now so I do all the cleaning.

Rhubarbcrumblerules · 29/11/2020 01:57

I feel very hard done by, cleaned for a Dr and his family for 8 years, got a gift every Christmas worth about £10 and that I never really needed (soaps, tea towels etc), not paid a penny during lockdown, then eventually said they didn't need me to come back. That was £300 a month of my income down the drain.

Rhubarbcrumblerules · 29/11/2020 01:58

Oh, and never any holiday pay, and they went away quite often and I wasn't i needed or paid when they weren't there

DinoGreen · 29/11/2020 06:53

I give my cleaner £25 and a box of chocolates or biscuits. Looking at some of the figures on here that’s at the lower end of the spectrum! But as someone else said, I don’t spend £50 on my immediate family so I’m not going to give it to my cleaner! We do appreciate her and paid her throughout most of March to June when she didn’t come.

Doordine · 29/11/2020 07:14

I'm feeling a bit tight after reading this thread!

Our cleaner comes fortnightly, so weekly her wage works out as £14. We were planning £20 in a card and some nice biscuits. She is absolutely amazing, just not sure we can afford any more!

Cluckycluck · 29/11/2020 07:54

Our cleaner only started at the beginning of November (she worked for the previous owners though) so will only have been a total of 6 times before Christmas. Would a nice box of Chocolates and a bottle of wine suffice? Or is a monetary bonus required?

Molly499 · 29/11/2020 23:47

Because they have actually taken the time to read the rules

Hard to justify that a cleaner is necessary really, desirable yes but unlike a nanny not crucial.

So I can’t let my Mum into my house but I could have a cleaner come in who has been in and out of multiple homes and mixing with a lot of people, just evaluate the risk factor there....just crazy.

CountFosco · 29/11/2020 23:56

We usually give the cleaner 1 weeks pay as a Christmas bonus which is comparable as a percent to my annual bonus. Thinking about upping it this year to 2 weeks.
