We had to do a bit of a fluffy exercise at work.

To pick a celeb/character/person who you admire who has the qualities that are aspirational to our team.

I did a bit of a fun one with my daughter on Elsa from frozen. All the others were men. Mostly ones in suits.

First time ever I've really felt sexism. AIBU?

......how is that sexist?

Alexandernevermind · 27/11/2020 23:24

Do you work with men? I guess women would choose women and men would choose men?

imamearcat · 27/11/2020 23:25

Not against me. But just more generally. They all just happened to pick men. But we don't live in a sexist world?

OP posts:
imamearcat · 27/11/2020 23:25

Mostly men but the women also chose men.

OP posts:
BlueBirdGreenFence · 27/11/2020 23:28

You didn't pick a woman either. You chose a cartoon stereotype of one...

Alexandernevermind · 27/11/2020 23:28

It surprises me that women would choose men. Are you in a traditionally male industry? Perhaps they are looking to industry leaders or historical figures for inspiration?

user1473878824 · 27/11/2020 23:28

So then you’re also sexist for picking a woman.

Ilovesugar · 27/11/2020 23:28

It’s the whole picture a scientist...old man grey hair ? Never a women normally when you ask children.

I would say it’s not sexist but a Prejudice. Most people thought of a male role model first

Alexandernevermind · 27/11/2020 23:29

Actually @BlueBirdGreenFence has a point. The only woman chosen was a cartoon, which is really sad.

BunnyMacDougal · 27/11/2020 23:29

But you didn’t pick a woman either?

Hawkins001 · 27/11/2020 23:31

Who did people choose ?

imamearcat · 27/11/2020 23:33

I just chose to do something with my daughter and let her choose for a bit of fun. I didn't really think about it until a saw the outcome.

Just sad that men and women aspire to.. well men!?

OP posts:
Hawkins001 · 27/11/2020 23:36

I can understand your perspective, me I'd choose Scully from xfiles

imamearcat · 27/11/2020 23:36

@Hawkins001 a range of people, CEO of a corporate American company, captain cook, big hero 6, someone from suits.. but all male.

OP posts:
user1473878824 · 27/11/2020 23:36

Women are allowed to admire men. And perhaps they just did the exercise properly.

imamearcat · 27/11/2020 23:37

Whats wrong with Elsa @user1473878824 ?

OP posts:
imamearcat · 27/11/2020 23:38

Men never admire women though do they? Never. That's my point.

OP posts:
Bluemooninmyeyes1 · 27/11/2020 23:39

I don’t see what the issue is? As a woman I admire and look up to many men but it doesn’t mean I’m sexist and hate the whole of the female species.

user1473878824 · 27/11/2020 23:43

What does Elsa bring to your team? And how long has your daughter been a part of it to pick a character that it can aspire to? You’re being massively unreasonable so perhaps the problem is everyone else did it properly.

You picked a cartoon but are judging women for not picking another woman.

Lots of men admire women and actually the most sexist bit of this thread is you saying they NEVER do.

I can’t believe you think this is you experiencing sexism for the first time.

imamearcat · 27/11/2020 23:43

Ok. IABU.

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 27/11/2020 23:45

YANBU. It's a sign of the sexism in our society that no one chose a woman in this exercise, just one cartoon girl. Not just the statistical bias in the OP's colleagues but in the apparent dearth of role models.

imamearcat · 27/11/2020 23:45

I'm not judging women. I'm just saying I feel sad that it just happens that everyone in our team happens to admire men.

OP posts:
MerchantOfVenom · 27/11/2020 23:47

Just sad that men and women aspire to.. well men!?

Well, the men and women in your team do!

YANBU, but you won’t get a sensible discussion on this in AIBU.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/11/2020 23:47

It's fine that they admire men; but I'd have hoped they'd equally admire women and so randomly you should have got a mix. That's the point isn't it?

imamearcat · 27/11/2020 23:48

Yes that's the point @ErrolTheDragon Smile
