Should I ride a tricycle?

I'm 44, have never been able to ride a bike. I'm getting a tricycle for Christmas and I'm excited. However, I fear I may look like a twat. What do you think?
YABU - you'll look like a twat
YANBU - go for it

Maybe you'll look like a twat - but go for it anyway. Why worry about what others think if it suits you?

JacobReesMogadishu · 27/11/2020 19:32

I’m sure you won’t look like a twat. Someone in my village rides one. Is yours an upright or a recumbent?

Don’t worry about what others may think, enjoy using it.

FurrySlipperBoots · 27/11/2020 19:34

Well, if you're getting one, then yes you should ride it, or what an utter waste of everyone's time and money! Grin

zombielady · 27/11/2020 19:35

It's only a cheap second hand one.

You've still got to ride it, or its spirit will die! Phoebe would tell you!

There was a lovely thread about this over summer.

The overwhelming response was. GET ON THE TRIKE!,

Ride it. For full effect you need a boom box on the back and a basket on the front with a yorkshire terrier. For max effect where matching hair bows with the terrier.

zombielady · 27/11/2020 19:41

Excellent idea!

Yes

Dont just do it OP. Own it!

ThatDamnScientist · 27/11/2020 19:44

Totally ride it and enjoy it!!!! I was looking at one for me and dd2 (a tricycle tandem as I am dyspraxic and we had to get to school somehow without using public transport before we had our car).

Please don’t think about anyone else or what they think, if they think you look like a test than that says more about them than you. Just enjoy the freedom with it!!

Plonque · 27/11/2020 19:47

My dad has one with a big basket between the back wheels. He's a big 6'4" strapping bloke and her rides his with pride Grin with his tiny dog in the basket

zombielady · 27/11/2020 19:49

I threw caution to the wind and bought a shopping trolley a couple of years ago. I have never looked back. I'm sure my trike will be the same.

Tricycles as fabulous, go for it, have fun. Ideally wearing a colourful poncho and a jaunty hat worn at a rakish angle.

zombielady · 27/11/2020 19:51

I love a poncho!!

They're becoming a lot more common where I live (UK); having ridden one, not being able to ride a bike will probably make getting used to it much easier - I kept feeling like it was tipping over on cambered roads for the first couple of weeks, but I'm told that's only usually a problem for those who ride a two wheeled bike too.

unmanagable · 27/11/2020 20:20

All summer on the way to work I used to pass a woman on a tricycle coming in the opposite direction , she use to peddle like the clappers , was most impressed, this thread has reminded me I haven't seen her for ages , casualty of lock down I guess

FurrySlipperBoots · 27/11/2020 20:24

Nooo, a French cat!

Nohomemadecandles · 27/11/2020 20:24

I can't ride a bike either. I'm unbearably envious of you! Please enjoy the trike. Please have adventures and bring home fresh bread in the basket. Please do everything! All the trike things.

MrsPernicious · 27/11/2020 20:29

I've got a trike.
Was the only way to transport toddler twins and the baby and the weekly shop.
Everybody knew me, this may not necessarily be a good thing. Hmm
I got it serviced last year, those toddlers are nearly 30. But it is a lot hillier here than where we were when they were young.

I hope you like somewhere rather flat, they are heavy buggers,

zombielady · 27/11/2020 20:32

I live at the top of a hill Hmm

zombielady · 27/11/2020 20:35

I've got a cat, but she's not French and I don't think she will sit in the basket.

Then you can look forwards to shapely thighs and arse plus a reduction to your risk of osteoporosis.

I ride one every day on the school run (about an hour a day). The rest of the day I use a regular bike, but I've been on a tricycle for years now. Unfortunately everyone knows me as either that lovely woman on the trike or that grumpy, exhausted woman mumbling to herself (depends on the mood, really). My baby is 6 years old and he's the last one on the trike. My eldest is 18 and my middle child is 10 (she rides her own bike alongside me).
When the kids are all done, I am absolutely swapping the passenger bench to a basket for the dog.
I love riding a trike! Here's the key to not tipping over: go easy, don't go at speed, especially on turns. You can get up to a decent speed on them, but don't go too fast. You really won't tip over if you just take it easy and cruise around. I go uphill on mine, no problem. You can get ones with a battery now as well. Mine's 13 years old, so no battery, but still, I manage absolutely fine without one.

goldenharvest · 27/11/2020 20:46

You will look a twat, but a stylish one! They are so sensible and you can get so much baggage onto them. I would get one (I have a dutch bike) but they look quite heavy to pedal?
