To be thinking I might move to rep of Ireland?

Aibu to think of moving to Ireland?
I am fed up of the lack of jobs here in the U.K.!
There seems to be (from the little research I have done) more benefits there (child benefit is WAY more!) , better job opportunities, less of an effect on jobs due to Covid. I have seen on here that they don't pay council tax! No water bills either. As far as I can see they pay slightly more tax! So it kind of evens out! But wages are better...
The education system there doesn't seem to pigeonhole children for a young age! They don't have to pass GCSE equivalents to do the A LEVEL equivalent...
University costs are less!! They have a grant system that is not paid back!!

Am I looking over with rose tinted glasses?? Is this the reality?? Anyone in Ireland who can clarify details for me?

Now I know they don't have an NHS like ours but from what I can see it is somewhat free for those that need it!!?

I'm half Irish and half english, lived in both, family still live in Dublin. I think ireland is great, but don't be blinkered, it has its downsides. As someone who's half in half out, I feel like I have a good sense of what those downsides are, namely: it can feel claustrophobic depending on where you're coming from (even dublin isnt all that big, and theres a definite island feel that I dont get in the UK, despite the UK also being an island). It is parochial in a lot of ways. Finally, if you're coming from England, you can expect to come up against some bigotry: luckily you dont see this in the new generations coming up, but theres a fair bit still knocking around in the 40+ crowd: and I think it might take some English people by surprise.

EarringsandLipstick · 29/11/2020 13:09

Probably wasting my time but:

@Readandwalk

Regarding PP and rent in Louth. Drogheda is very expensive to rent in.

Drogheda is not all of Louth. I've given the average rents for Louth. They are not high, compared to elsewhere in the country.

Unlike you, I'm giving evidence, not anecdotes.

seems go think its acceptable to I slyly me and accuss me of sneering people on benifits
Quite the opposite

Don't even know what you meant to write here. Firstly it's benefits.

The way you talk about your sister & the great lifestyle she apparently has, on social welfare (the term used here, btw, not benefits) sounds sneery to me. You've repeated these points several times.

Not everyone living here is as arrogant, keen to discount others and plain right rude as #Earringsandlipstick.

Where have I been arrogant? I've corrected your errors & provided facts, with evidence.

Something you should approve of if indeed you are a teacher. (I really hope that's not true).

EarringsandLipstick · 29/11/2020 13:10
@EarringsandLipstick, look at how you have to jump on every post with false accusations. You discount people's experiences, accuse them of saying things they haven't and insult them.

You are coming across as truly horrible. Pitiful really.
Please do show me where I've done any of this? I think that's you who have done that!!

Readandwalk · 29/11/2020 13:24

@EarringsandLipstick I mentioned my sister once as an example as OP specifically mentions social welfare. When told this was impossible by another poster I asked why. I did not sneer at my sister or anyone else on benifits. And you said yourself it "seems to you", so you cant find evidence for your own accusation

Your language to myself and other posters continually uses negative connotations (" spouting off....talking through your arse...are you really Irish ...doubting my saying I'm a teacher, looking up sats for specific Irish towns,)

You insult posters.

You are very defensive and insulting equally. An Irush saying you may be familiar with is

DID YOU PISS ON A NETTLE.

Readandwalk · 29/11/2020 13:25

And commenting on typos. The last defense of the desperate.

God luck with your decision OP. Ireland hasany many benifits and us an excellent choice for many.

EarringsandLipstick · 29/11/2020 13:30

Ok @Readandwalk it's not even vaguely amusing anymore so I won't engage past this just to say:

I have not said any of the things you allege eg 'spouting off' 🧐 nor did I suggest you weren't Irish 😂

Why would looking up statistics ie being factual be a problem to you? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I haven't been defensive at all. I happen to like accuracy & facts, unlike yourself.

I think you should take a leave out of your own book, and read then walk 💁🏻‍♀️

Readandwalk · 29/11/2020 13:48

@earringsandlipstick here you go , all direct quotes from you to me and other posters.

7.55
Superficial nonsense

7.56 Where do people get this rubbish
16.44 Ypu have spouted a lot of incorrect information
10.52 You're talking through your arse
11.10 Nonsense
You're sneering comments ( which you cant provide evidence for)
11.14 I'm wondering if you live in Ireland at all.

There you are. In your comments when people post about their experience of livng in Ireland. As a teacher ( which you sincerely hope I wasnt in another post), I'm used to seeing how bullies work.

Readandwalk · 29/11/2020 13:58

So @Earrringandlipstick are you going to own your language clearly quoted. Or care you going to deny the actual words you wrote? Even though there are there?

No wo der you said you wont engage anymore because you cant. You've been exposed and dont like it. Smile

EarringsandLipstick · 29/11/2020 14:20

I did say I wasn't going to engage, and I won't further, as you actually are the bully.

None of your quotes relate back to the points you made, or support your argument.

Please stop insulting me & hope you find a happier way to spend your Sunday than writing abusive posts. Take care.

OchonAgusOchonO · 29/11/2020 14:26

theres a definite island feel that I dont get in the UK, despite the UK also being an island

The UK isn't an island.....

Readandwalk · 29/11/2020 14:32

@EarringsandLipstick but you denied saying things so I quote them with times for you?
So why are you denying them?
You're some piece if work. You've denied saying things.
I've shown them to you as written in the thread.

Not liking this you flounce off. Maybe you're used to talking to people in derogatory language and when they provide evidence for it you accuse them of bullying.

You picked on the wrong person this time. And youve done what all bullies do. Make out to be the victim.

Readandwalk · 29/11/2020 14:34

The island feel might be due to proximity to the sea. Or that even if a couple of hours away the route is usually quicker with less traffic.

bevm72yellow · 29/11/2020 14:52

yep pros and cons depend upon what your personal needs or circumstances are e.g. single, have children or elderly.

Hillbillybo · 29/11/2020 15:02

It is definitely a different country. Only saying the obvious as some expect it to be like an extension of England.

EarringsandLipstick · 29/11/2020 15:24

Maybe you're used to talking to people in derogatory language and when they provide evidence for it you accuse them of bullying.

I've respectfully asked you to disengage. Please stop @ me.

I have not used any derogatory language against anyone.

I have also not 'flounced'. I said I was disengaging. Please stop attacking me, calling me a bully with no evidence & being aggressive.

The comments you quoted were not against any individual but part of a reasoned debate on a topic, for which I provided evidence.

On the other hand calling someone 'pitiful' a 'bully', 'some piece of work' ' desperate' 'defensive' and more is a personalised attack which is against MN rules. Please stop.

Regarding the 'quotes' they unfortunately don't back up your points, at all. For example, I never queried if you were Irish. I queried if you lived in Ireland, as you seemed so unaware of basic facts about life here, which I corrected with evidence. You don't seem to like facts tho, preferring rude attacks.

I have friends in Li.erick who pay as much rent as they did in London
My comment got deleted earlier not sure why I used the A word others used? Anyway @Readandwalk I'd a wee nosey at rental websites, you're friends must have up sized from a bed sit to a 4/5 bedroom home if their housing costs haven't changed.

Shopgirl1 · 29/11/2020 21:04

@OchonAgusOchonO

theres a definite island feel that I dont get in the UK, despite the UK also being an island

The UK isn't an island.....

I think it’s clear Great Britain was meant, which is an island.
OchonAgusOchonO · 29/11/2020 21:31

I think it’s clear Great Britain was meant, which is an island.

And that is why NI and the good Friday agreement was completely forgotten about wrt brexit....

Hillbillybo · 29/11/2020 21:45

Ha ha yes. Be interesting to see the results of Brexit.

EarringsandLipstick · 29/11/2020 21:49

@pollypebble

How interesting that this is your only post on the thread so far. 🤨

You provided zero examples of this 'bullying'. Interestingly, you have nothing to say about the other poster's nasty name-calling of me.

In each & every post, my points were based on evidence & facts. I'm certainly going to step in where people are writing inaccurate, misinformed posts that don't reflect reality, anecdotes or not.

Hillbillybo · 29/11/2020 21:51

Anyone know the statistics for life expectancy and heath outcomes for both countries?

@Hillbillybo seems Ireland is 18th and U.K. 29th

@OchonAgusOchonO

I think it’s clear Great Britain was meant, which is an island.

And that is why NI and the good Friday agreement was completely forgotten about wrt brexit....

Not sure I follow your rationale on this. You might explain how one remark on a thread is the reason for that in a bit more detail.
