To think songs from the 90s and 00s were just as sexual as WAP

DD 23 played me WAP and I felt old, obviously I had the Typical mum reaction.

However she asked me about whether I had songs like this when I was younger and I remembered

Khia: my neck, my back

Madonna - Erotica

I’m sure there are countless others.

So why is WAP so shocking to us ladies in our 40s and 50s?

Surely WAP is the same thing as these hits ?

Missy Elliot Minute Man, Tush and even the more radio friendly Work it are some of my favorites from back in the day

@Feministicon

Wayne Marshall ‘G Spot’ and ‘Orgy’ and Ginuwine ‘Pony’ spring to mind 😂
Just brought back memories of Pure Swing 94 and Choice FM radio 💃💃

Personally, while I generally prefer radio edits due to the demeaning way women are referred to, I don’t actually care about the sexual words.

Except, I don’t think it’s liberating to women at all to have a song with a backbeat if ‘there’s some whores in this house’ and to be basically singing about how you like getting choked.

That’s the opposite of liberating for women. See the new boss same as the old boss.

WAP is not remotely an attractive song though. It's just bad language for the sake of it. Theres nothing appealing or nuanced to it, she just sounds desperate and a bit pathetic. It's also violent and gratuitous

But I'm lucky enough to remember Mtume - Juicy Fruit. That was an explicit song, but it was also very classy. It had a warm loving feel about it, and wry humour too "I've had a few but not that many" Grin

goldielock Ah thanks for clarifying (I am now hearing that in my head) Grin

Every generation thinks it has invented sex. Thats the way it has always been and will always be till the end of time.

ThornAmongstRoses · 28/11/2020 06:11

What is WAP??

Smiling89 · 28/11/2020 06:22

This thread got me thinking more than I thought it would.

A pp mentioned The Bad Touch and I realised I didn't find that one offensive for some reason and I think it's because it's a song about sex, but there's no mention of power imbalance in it (male or female). Songs about sex aren't inherently offensive to me, just the attitude towards sex.

Lyrics like
"You show me yours, I'll show you mine"
"Do it doggy style so we can both watch X Files"
"God knows where we stuck it"

Mutual decisions and enjoyment for both parties considered.

Missy Elliot’s ‘Work It’ is pure filth...and a great track. There have always been blatant sexual references in popular music. Why are you chewed up about it?

pictish · 28/11/2020 06:52

Sorry that was meant to say, ‘Why is anyone chewed up about it?’ - not you specifically.

ICJump · 28/11/2020 06:56

But its not like say the Madonna Sex era music was all fine and goid people complained about it. As a young teen it just didnt feel good to listen too anymore. Vouge was loads better
