AIBU?

Why can't people read properly?!

Might be a tad unreasonable but why do people bother replying to threads if they haven't read the op properly?

Op hi I have issues with my xx but the yy is having a hard time getting any attention from us and it's my 48th birthday today and everyone has forgotten it even though I get presents for my families fish, I just don't know what to do about the custard curdling

Or some other stuff like that

Most posters

hi op I'd try this recipe

But other people are like

have you thought you might have asd? Hi op, I don't know how old you are ITS IN THE OP!!

Read it!! Or even worse is when the thread has moved on from custard recipes to maybe the op has realised that there are bigger issues and they need help with that and people are still commenting custard recipes!!

OP posts:

It is VERY annoying when people do that.
I think that a lot of the time, people are just so eager to get their response in that they just don't bother reading everything - and I've seen some posts where the poster has clearly only replied to the thread title and not even bothered to read the opening post at all!

It's rude though - at least do the OP the courtesy of reading everything they've written before going off half-cocked.

I think some people just weren't as interested in reading-related subjects at school, and maybe they preferred hands on activities. These types of people might then go on to do trades work etc and probably don't require the same level of reading ability as say a solicitor or copy writer.

That's one explanation for why some people can't read properly.

I couldn't agree more, and I've noticed it a lot more recently.

I agree that the level of reading comprehension is poor, but with phrases like "my families fish" (my family's fish) and "my neighbours goats birthday" (my neighbour's goat's birthday) the level of writing that people are trying to comprehend isn't particularly high either...

Into what? Oh no, this isn't the thread about changing water into wine...

Well, clearly it would have to be into a giant krispy kreme.

I think that red is nice on old telephone boxes and fire engines but wouldn't want it on my house personally.
Could you repaint the property?

A closely related issue is when people keep posting speculative guesses on a thread when the OP's problem has already been solved:

OP: What is the capital of Lithuania?

Poster 1: It's Vilnius. Horrible industrial place; I had to go there once for work.

Poster 2: I think it's Riga? It's one of the Baltic-y cities isn't it?

Poster 3: Have you tried Tiger King on Netflix?

That's obviously a basic general knowledge question, but you see this on threads on technical and specialist issues, where you get people who have professional expertise posting advice, which is then contradicted by people who don't know what they are talking about, but want to show that they have an opinion.

I've been guilty of this at times. It's what comes of posting in the wee hours while sleep deprived, I'm afraid.

Custard is only good when its hot. And readymade stuff is never the same. Doesnt have a skin and is all gloopy.

@AmyandPhilipfan

I do worry about people’s comprehension levels sometimes. I used to work for a big company in the Customer Services department. My job was to reply to the repeat emails. I would sometimes get given a long stream of emails where the customer started off perfectly pleasant with a simple problem and then kept getting absolutely useless responses that had nothing to do with their problem! So by the time I got the last email the customer would be furious, and usually rightly so! Sometimes I could not believe how so many people could totally misread a situation!

You must have seen some of my complaints then 😂

I have been on the receiving end of this numerous times to the point I have had to bullet point the problem as the advisor just bats a response back that is completely irrelevant.

Agree.
Tinned/boxed is totally different. Good for trifles though.

The lack of skin is a plus!

But prefer home made.

This is a zombie thread from 6 years hours ago. The custard will have gone off by now.
