Can anyone else not be bothered to do a turkey roast just for immediate family?

We’re probably not seeing anyone else on Xmas day and I’m guessing we’re not the only ones. What is everyone doing for lunch as not sure if it will be depressing not to do the traditional thing (or maybe someone has more fun, better ideas)?

I can't be bothered with turkey, none of us particularly like it. So last year I didn't do any roast bird and we had a huge pile of pigs in blankets instead. My lot enjoyed it so much they want the same again this year. Grin

I'm doing the whole shebang for our small household... because we want it.

PizzaForOne · 25/11/2020 22:16

Steaks
Buffet of posh party food
Curry

Whatever you want

Newuser991 · 25/11/2020 22:16

That sounds glorious. I think I will do exactly that this year Grin

Clarabellawilliamson · 25/11/2020 22:17

We are having a buffet of everyone's favourite things, just for the 4 of us. I can't be arsed to cook a roast that the kids (5&2) won't want to sit and eat. They think if we turn the table round and lay it out like a party tea it's the MOST EXCITING THING EVER!! We will do a roast another day

Newuser991 · 25/11/2020 22:17

The pigs in blankets I mean sounds glorious

Clarabellawilliamson · 25/11/2020 22:17

Pigs in blankets added to the buffet table 😍😍

notanothertakeaway · 25/11/2020 22:18

Roast chicken here

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 25/11/2020 22:18

There's only ever the four of us (2 adults 2 kids) so no different this year. I'll be doing a full roast as usual.

CornishTiger · 25/11/2020 22:20

Local Indian is open. I’m very tempted esp as I’m working on Xmas afternoon

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 25/11/2020 22:21

It’s the sides that make the difference with a Christmas dinner. So you could do a chicken with all the usual accompaniments and it will still feel just as special. Or if you want to go slightly more fancy, a duck.

Otherwise I’d suggest going totally off piste and do something completely different, like maybe look at traditional Christmas meals from other countries/cultures and do that. In Japan it’s quite a big tradition now to have KFC for Christmas! 😀

speakout · 25/11/2020 22:21

I have often done an Indian takeaway on Christmas day.
Our local takeaway is always really busy on chrustmas day, co obviously other people do that too.

MaverickDanger · 25/11/2020 22:22

We’re having a Turkey crown for the two of us, only so that we have leftover Christmas sandwiches.

That’s the best bit of Christmas food.

Mindymomo · 25/11/2020 22:22

I wasn’t going to get a turkey, but my eldest son said he would pay and to order it from our butchers. We usually go to relatives on Boxing Day, but not this year so we are having cold turkey and mash potatoes. My sons will have a turkey curry.

JaceLancs · 25/11/2020 22:23

There is usually only 3 or 4 of us so no different this year
I usually do chicken (local farm free range) with another choice - not sure yet whether lamb or beef
I enjoy cooking so we will have home made stuffing, pigs in blankets and 7-8 different veg

TheRubyRedshoes · 25/11/2020 22:23

Op, I don't know many people who ever do turkey!

We have duck, goose... Rib of beef... Anything but turkey.
Go wild, you'll probably never go back.

HirplesWithHaggis · 25/11/2020 22:24

We usually have me, dh, mil, ds2 and his ds, sometimes ds1. This year, ds1 will be with his dp and their new dd, a hundred miles away. We're not going to risk mil travelling, she's elderly and frail and has dementia. Ds2 and his dp are expecting their first baby on the 21st, so who knows if they'll be here, and dh is working till 3.30pm.

We have a turkey crown in the freezer and I guess I may as well cook it, but meh. Otoh, it'll be the first solo Xmas for me and dh since 1986 (depending on ds2 and his dp...) so we might just pig out and slob around. Grin

premiumhob · 25/11/2020 22:24

We have always had Christmas Day at home just us since we got married and started our family. We also do always have turkey!

JaceLancs · 25/11/2020 22:24

I also do a special meal on Xmas eve - the leftovers from both days will keep us going until New Year’s Eve

Pascha · 25/11/2020 22:24

When the kids were smaller we didn't bother with a full roast. Some years it's been risotto or even sausage sandwiches. This year everyone voted for roast beef so we are going a bit traditional for once.

Kljnmw3459 · 25/11/2020 22:25

We never do a turkey anyways, plenty of other more delicious options. Go wild!

TheRubyRedshoes · 25/11/2020 22:29

I've always fancied an afternoon tea Christmas theme on Xmas day..

lyralalala · 25/11/2020 22:29

We're having duck this year as there are far fewer people for dinner.

Pomegranatespompom · 25/11/2020 22:30

I’m wondering if reasonable to eat trifle all day.

GerardWay123 · 25/11/2020 22:30

Both DC's work Christmas Day. DH, myself and our dogs go to our beach hut late morning. The beach cafe does a wonderful charity event (mulled wine & mince pies). Then off to sit in the pub garden. Back home with DC's then open pressies and have chilli as they are sick of the sight of Christmas Dinner by then.
It's weird but it works.
