Can anyone else not be bothered to do a turkey roast just for immediate family?

We’re probably not seeing anyone else on Xmas day and I’m guessing we’re not the only ones. What is everyone doing for lunch as not sure if it will be depressing not to do the traditional thing (or maybe someone has more fun, better ideas)?

@Covidcovidcovid

We usually have turkey, ham, sausage meat stuffing and roast..unsure if this is an Irish thing or not..but I would definitely just have ham and sausage meat stuffing for days, with at least 2 types if not 3 of potatoes
Sorry should have said roast beef
HollywoodTease · 26/11/2020 00:03

Only 3 of us here (me, DH and adult DS) but I will probably do what we always do.

Small gammon joint on Xmas eve as it's DS's fave, probably with chips and egg. Turkey (crown) on the day with all the trimmings but we only usually eat the one meal about 2pm then pick at leftovers later on. Finally a small beef joint with yorkshires and loads of roast veg on boxing day.

Followed by sandwiches, curries and stews for the rest of the week though!

My late mother who was a lovely woman but not a great cook decided one year we were having goose and I only found out as I arrived on Christmas Day. She was unprepared for the amount of goose fat oozing out everywhere. It was hilarious and for reasons best known to herself had decided to glaze the goose with honey! It tasted beyond awful.
Another year she decided we were going to eat our hot turkey dinner on waxed paper Christmas plates as it would save on washing up. I always did the washing up anyway! I refused to eat from it and got an ordinary plate from the cupboard. They're okay for a buffet but not a hot meal with gravy.
Lest anyone thinks I'm mean or ungrateful, I always brought dessert, cheese n biscuits plus Christmas crackers.
She wasn't offended but she did have some wacky ideas!

nokidshere · 26/11/2020 00:08

There's only ever the 4 of us and I've never cooked a roast at Christmas. When they were small and had been up since goodness knows what time, we had an afternoon party tea and then we had dinner when they were in bed.

As they have got older (now at uni) we do the same but all together. Full table laden with everyone's favourites from about 3pm, some hot, some cold and we just graze for the whole day.

Leaannb · 26/11/2020 00:58

We are doing Mexican food for Christmas. Enchiladas,Tamales, Nachos and Tacos

That sounds like my dinner for tomorrow...Its Thanksgiving

@Pomegranatespompom

I’m wondering if reasonable to eat trifle all day.
Love trifle especially sherry trifle. My mum made a great sherry trifle. Not sure it was legal to drive after having a bowl of it but it was delicious.
Mintjulia · 26/11/2020 02:28

There will be two of us for lunch I think , so I'm doing chicken with all the trimmings instead. Much quicker, just as nice and no waste. And a tiny ham for Boxing Day.

Ragwort · 26/11/2020 02:40

Yes, I love the full Turkey meal, and am doing one this Sunday as well as a sort of belated Thanksgiving meal Grin.

BoomBoomsCousin · 26/11/2020 02:57

I did a thali one year. For just two of us. More work than any roast. It was amazing but I haven't done it since!

We're doing a turkey crown for four of us this year, just as we have for the last 5 years. DH and I take it in turns each year because we both enjoy it so much.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 26/11/2020 04:22

Love turkey, Love roast dinner.

will be making just for me, with pigs in blankets, cranberry sauce, lots of veggies, Yorkshire pudding.

No sprouts. I don't like sprouts.

Rangoon · 26/11/2020 04:38

We'll probably be having roast lamb - a little bit of garlic and rosemary from our garden - with lots of roast vegetables. In the interests of our exports, buy New Zealand lamb. Those sheep ate grass and had a healthy outdoor life. After Brexit, you might really need us.

Leobynature · 26/11/2020 04:44

Christmas Day I will be at my moms
But for Boxing Day It will be the 3 of us, I’m thinking aunt Bessies Yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes. An Iceland frozen turkey (the one for £10 you just stick in the oven) roasted veg (Again already prepared) and sprouts. I will also do a nut roast for me and stuffing. Totally cheating but it may look authentic. Oh and I’m going to pick up for KFC gravy Grin

PirateCatQueen · 26/11/2020 04:53

Haven’t had a turkey for years. So much work!

Going for a rack of lamb this year. Lemon glazed carrots and mash to go with I think.

Whattheactual20201 · 26/11/2020 05:08

I’m not changing what I usually do No one here likes turkey though

Me, DF and DC 1 will have a selection of meat ( beef , chicken , fancy ham )
Roast potatoes, veg and Yorkshire puddings.
Also on the table stuffing , pigs in blankets.
4 diff Types of desert for to choose from
Evening snacks include snack things mini pizza, chicken bites and nibbles.
DS2 - 7 will have chicken nuggets and chips 🤣🤣

BarbaraofSeville · 26/11/2020 05:38

Never done Christmas with just the 4 of us so will probably massively over cater if I do the usual meal

Sometimes there's just two of us and I usually cook enough food for 6-8.

However, we really like roast dinners and that means little or no cooking for about 3 days afterwards and I have a step by step plan so I can do it in about 3 hours with lots of breaks and little stress.

We have a single large turkey breast and the normal sides, but not endless varieties, probably just roast potatoes, stuffing, pigs in blankets, sprouts, parsnips and carrots.

We will have a full dinner from the leftovers at least once, plus things like leftover roast potatoes fried up with pigs and blankets, turkey sandwiches, veg in a macaroni cheese, that sort of thing. There is usually some turkey that is frozen in slices.

But OP, if you like turkey have one, if you don't, don't. Or you could have it on Christmas Eve and then have Christmas Day off cooking. I think we might do that this year actually.

Calmandmeasured1 · 26/11/2020 05:50

Only going to have one household of 3 of us this year but having Turkey Crown, Roast beef and all the trimmings.

FangsForTheMemory · 26/11/2020 05:57

I live on my own but wouldn’t cook turkey I’m under any circumstances. Would far sooner have duck.

merrygoround51 · 26/11/2020 06:01

This year I am not bothered cooking it so I am buying the dinner In already prepped and the turkey and ham cooked

I like a big Christmas dinner

HuntedForest · 26/11/2020 06:21

We never have turkey or roast! DH is not British and doesn't understand the need for a "traditional" meal. Totally unheard of where he comes from. We let the DC decide what we eat, so it was often spaghetti and tomato sauce when they were younger. Now they're a bit more adventurous and they want to cook this year Grin

justanotherneighinparadise · 26/11/2020 06:23

Haven’t done it for years.

This year we’re having a tagine with flatbreads and side dishes and Boxing Day will be slow cooked lamb.

Goatinthegarden · 26/11/2020 06:27

Growing up, we never had turkey as we all agreed it was the worst of all the meats. We loved lamb in my family, so we usually had that. If additional people were coming, my mum would add on a nut roast (for the veggies), duck and an M&S turkey crown for the traditionalists.

As teens, my mum started catering to our random whims and we’d often have Mexican food or curries instead.

This year, it’s likely to just be DH and I and we’re having the house renovated so we’ll be lucky to even have use of a kitchen on Christmas Day at this rate....

ginsparkles · 26/11/2020 06:42

It has only ever been 4 of us for Christmas dinner at our house, we always do the whole shebang but we don't always have turkey, sometimes duck, beef. If we do have turkey we have a crown. This year we are having venison.

nosswith · 26/11/2020 06:48

Likely to be lamb, only three of us. Turkey or goose means leftovers for days.

Walkley18 · 26/11/2020 06:48

For those doing turkey crown, what's the best way to prepare (bacon etc.?) And the M & S ones, do you have to do anything or is it already added / are they fresh or frozen?
