To not stay in bathroom when running a bath

felineflutter · 25/11/2020 21:28

DH says everyone should stay in the bathroom when running a bath incase it overflows and floods the bathroom. This has never happened by the way.

AIBU to not stay in the bathroom for 10 minutes and busy myself with other things or is DH right and I am being wreckless and lazy to walk away from a running bath?

Err I didn't used to but DH insists one of us stays in there now.. I have flooded the bathroom both in our old house and this one, until water poured through the light fittings, so I take his point if I'm honest. I just seem to drift off and find things that need doing and forget. Luckily I have a very patient DH.

BackforGood · 25/11/2020 22:46

I think 'wandering off' is a bit risky as it is easy to get distracted and lose track of time. Nothing wrong with popping out to get something, but I wouldn't leave more than a specific 'going to fetch something'.

I suppose it depends on how easily distracted you are / if you are likely to fall asleep on your bed as pp said / if you are likely to get engrossed in something on your phone and lose track of time / etc. Many of us are like that. Blush

It would be bad news if the bath overflowed.

When my son was about 7 he decided to give the puppy a bath while the water was running. The he forgot about it and I came back in to find the unconscious puppy sunk to the bottom. Pulled him out, did CPR and managed to revive him but he did have some brain damage. Never again have I left the tub running alone.

DuchessMinnie · 25/11/2020 22:57

I have flooded the bathroom twice and only remembered that I was running a bath when all the downstairs lights went out. I now sit in the bathroom whenever I run a bath.

GlowingOrb · 25/11/2020 23:08

I times mine to about 85% full and now if I want to step away, I set a timer on my phone.

BlueThistles · 25/11/2020 23:49

Huge bath.... never stand and watch it fill... its always perfect depth when I return 🛀🏻

RoseMartha · 26/11/2020 00:38

I never stay in the bathroom when it is running otherwise I would be in there twenty minutes as pressure is fairly low.

PolkadotGiraffe · 26/11/2020 00:42

Get an Aqualisa bath fitting, then you can set it to run a bath at the temperature and depth you want and go and relax in peace until it is ready. Smile

HeddaGarbled · 26/11/2020 01:00

You’re relying on the overflow?

Then I agree with your H, you’re leaving it running unattended for too long. That’s wasteful of water and water-heating.

I do leave the bathroom briefly while the bath is running, but I’ve never left it long enough to overflow.

HeddaGarbled · 26/11/2020 01:06

It’s ‘reckless’ BTW 😊

LostAcre · 26/11/2020 01:06

I tend to potter about upstairs while the bath is running, so I’m in and out of the bathroom checking on it every minute or two.

We do have an overflow on the bath, but I don’t believe that’s big enough to take the full flow of water from the taps if someone were to abandon the bath while it was running.
Can’t say I’ve tested that though, as I always turn the water off before it’s as high as the overflow.

Changethetoner · 26/11/2020 01:20

I usually do stay in the bathroom when I run a bath - because we have a small hot water tank, and it runs out quickly at only a few inches, so you have to be alert - and turn off the tap asap it starts to run cold. Otherwise you have a horrid cool bath. (as opposed to a shallow but hot one). A bigger tank is on the list of home improvements, but the list is loooong, and meanwhile we manage.

Tumbleweed101 · 26/11/2020 06:59

I leave it to do things like find a dry towel etc but not to do jobs. Mine fills fairly quickly though.

Fedupalways · 26/11/2020 07:01

I don't stay in the bathroom but never shut the bathroom door whilst it's running incase I can't get back in and it over flows! Grin

flaviaritt · 26/11/2020 07:03

Been running baths for 30 years. It’s not happened. That would be a vast amount of water and also it would be cold!

howdidigettobe50something · 26/11/2020 07:22

Never stayed in...do a few jobs and pop back regularly. This makes me think of the fact that my husband will stand and do nothing whilst waiting for a kettle to boil whilst I would do a job or two such as empty the dishwasher, put something away or something else I happen to notice needs doing!

Oblomov20 · 26/11/2020 07:33

Never have stayed. Never had a bath overflow.

felineflutter · 26/11/2020 08:00

Ah yes, thank you.

Is he always such a worrier? Is he often spouting what everyone does or should do, or is this out of character? Has it happened to him before?

Years of running baths every night for kids & I've never managed to flood a bathroom, or come close to it.

Unless you've come very close to flooding the bathroom, just tell him to stop being such a ninny.

Mind you, you're starting to sound as bad as him, what's your obsession with things not working/breaking?
LyndaSnellsSniff · 26/11/2020 08:31

I don’t now but I did when the DCs where toddlers and I worried about them getting in unnoticed.

A few times the now teenaged DCs have gone off to run their own baths, moaned that it was taking aaaaggggeees to fill only for me to discover they haven’t put the plug in. 😒

No sorry I was just thinking about DH's response.

I’m easily distracted so tend to in bathroom...

drspouse · 26/11/2020 09:40

My bath takes exactly "brush my teeth go to the bedroom do my inhaler get my pyjamas and a book and nip to the loo" long to run so no worries about it running over. Plus it has an overflow pipe.
