Threads being deleted.

WilsonMilson · 25/11/2020 07:58

I’m a bit fed up with Mumsnet deleting threads just because the op didn’t get the response he/she was looking for.

I’m not saying that trolling or bullying is ok, but this is AIBU and you know what you might be in for when you post.

There have been a few threads recently that have disappeared in such a way, and one just this morning about nappy changing on a train.

Bit annoying tbh.

Their sandbox, their rules.

They're only threads on the internet, don't get invested.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 25/11/2020 08:01

You will get deleted yourself - taat

WilsonMilson · 25/11/2020 08:11

@NoIDontWatchLoveIslandI doubt I’ll get deleted, I don’t think I post anything too controversial and this was a genuine gripe. I’m happy
to be told I’m unreasonable, I just find that when people have taken time to reply it’s a bit annoying.
I totally understand if there’s safeguarding issues, privacy breaches etc, but sometimes it seems it’s just because the op doesn’t like the way the thread is going.

@Lockheart you’re right, their rules. I’m not particularly invested, it’s just an observation as I’ve been reading a few threads recently that have then just disappeared mid read.

OP posts:
Welcometonowhere · 25/11/2020 08:23

Sometimes the responses are way over the top.

Aibu is unpredictable. I don’t blame people for just wanting to have the thread deleted and move on.

Nicknacky · 25/11/2020 08:26

I’m getting really fed up of their reasons as to why they are deleting threads. The train one was because it was 85% AIBU and the usual troll hunting comment. Delete those comments and lock the thread, stop deleting them.

I’m getting fed up of the amount of times I come back to threads to see them gone with daft reasons.

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 25/11/2020 08:26

I hate the "we're taking this down while we look behind the scenes". May as well just say "its gone" because looking behind the scenes never results in a thread coming back.

AuntieStella · 25/11/2020 08:29

'Look behind the scenes' is code for 'pretty sure it's a PBP' and yes threads started by known trolls are deleted.

I share your irritation about spurious 'privacy concerns' deletions (though I've not seen one I think was unwarranted for a while)

Welcometonowhere · 25/11/2020 08:30

The train one was obviously a troll.

PleasantVille · 25/11/2020 08:30

I agree, the taking a look behind the scenes is stupid as they never come back and update the reason. As is pretended that deletions are rare, my TIO always has a couple on and I don't post very much.

The changing pooey nappy on a train thread has gone???
Came back this morning to see if the OP still considered it perfectly acceptable to change child's nappy in the middle of a train carriage and attempting to defend doing that.
Definitely YANBU (OP of this thread, not nappy woman)

festivebug · 25/11/2020 08:33

You may not agree with it but it is their site and therefore their rules. I've had a comment deleted that I didn't think was bad but I understand they're just trying to keep things safe and peaceful. I don't think it's fair to bash them for that.

hellymissy · 25/11/2020 08:34

I agree OP sometimes threads get deleted for really sillly reasons and it's annoying!!

The poster doesn't have to check the responses either if they don't get the answers they were hoping for. They shouldn't post in the first place then.

AaronPurr · 25/11/2020 08:35

I've noticed it hapens a lot more than it used to. Especially threads which are taken down because the OP has privacy concerns. When the OP has posted a very generic and not at all outing post, but they just don't like the responses they're getting.

Sparklingbrook · 25/11/2020 08:38

So much obvious trolling at the moment. When a thread gets deleted it's usually no big surprise. I didn't see the thread about nappies on a train but even the description makes me Hmm.
It's just a Talk forum on the internet.

MichelleScarn · 25/11/2020 08:39

Absolutely aaron like " albu to think my dm favours my dsis because she offers more child care as she lives in the same town and I live 200 miles away" thread then deleted as this is so outing!

fashu · 25/11/2020 09:02

Honestly, sometimes mumsnet is a horrible place, if you don't have the same opinion it doesn't mean the other person is wrong, it just means you have a difference of opinion! This applies both ways on the giving end and the receiving end.
If you wrote something and your not liking the responses, unless there is something in the post that can identify you, then unfollow and don't reply again, simple.

EarringsandLipstick · 25/11/2020 09:03

I posted about this yesterday @WilsonMilson and agree with you.

Yes, it is 'their rules' & just the Internet but posters engage with & relate to issues, and they are often helpful to others beyond OP.

As I said yesterday, lock the thread for further comment if needed, but it's frustrating to see a thread disappear due to very vague poster concerns, they're the ones I notice most at the moment. No issue with troll posts being removed, obv

UrghThisIsHard · 25/11/2020 09:05

DuvetDay I think that one was a troll though. I was getting incredibly frustrated with her cherry-picking things to reply to - like, twenty paragraphs and she would just repeat 'yes, I used a mat'.

I guess for me I don't really see why it matters if they're lying or are trolls by some other definition (I don't really understand it all) if the subject is innocuous. The discussion had by others can stand in own right. Or am I being too reasonable?

loobyloo1234 · 25/11/2020 09:07

I agree. People post on AIBU - they dont get the responses they were hoping for - conveniently their post gets removed 'because of privacy concerns' - pretty tedious

BrumBoo · 25/11/2020 09:09

DuvetDayI think that one was a troll though. I was getting incredibly frustrated with her cherry-picking things to reply to - like, twenty paragraphs and she would just repeat 'yes, I used a mat'.

Actually, that is usually a red flag for troll to give short responses after a detailed op. It means they avoid tripping themselves up by contacting their replies from their opening post.

lyralalala · 25/11/2020 09:10

I find it bizarre they delete them so easily. I was recognised from a thread I posted about a delicate family situation and they refused to delete it saying it wasn’t fair on people to invested their time. Then even when I emailed a screenshot of the text I’d received about it (basically saying they were going to speak to the family member - who was absolutely vile to me about my abusive childhood) they said they’d only delete it if I wrote on the thread explaining that I’d asked for deletion.

It took 9 hours from my asking for them to finally take down the thread. Yet other people’s threads get zapped super quickly

BoudiccaD · 25/11/2020 09:25

Yanbu. I think threads should stand but be locked if necessary.

I also dont agree with posts being deleted because someone finds them offensive and reports them. Like on a particular thread, someone said something like 'That's disgusting. You dirty fucker' and someone else put 'Reported' and it was deleted. Why? 🤷‍♀️

I don't agree with censorship to protect snowflakes' sensibilities.

The censorship on here is a joke anyway.

Gobbycop · 25/11/2020 09:31

Why should staff that probably moderate this site in their own time and for free, trawl threads cleaning them up because members are incapable of being civil.

It's easier to just delete.

AaronPurr · 25/11/2020 09:36

Do MN soley rely on unpaid volunteers to moderate their site? I would think a site as large as this would have paid moderators.
