Threads being deleted.

WilsonMilson · 25/11/2020 07:58

I’m a bit fed up with Mumsnet deleting threads just because the op didn’t get the response he/she was looking for.

I’m not saying that trolling or bullying is ok, but this is AIBU and you know what you might be in for when you post.

There have been a few threads recently that have disappeared in such a way, and one just this morning about nappy changing on a train.

Bit annoying tbh.

OP posts:

@Gobbycop

Why should staff that probably moderate this site in their own time and for free, trawl threads cleaning them up because members are incapable of being civil.

It's easier to just delete.

MNHQ don’t do it just for love AFAIK.

Although naturally they love us.

justanotherneighinparadise · 25/11/2020 09:38

I’m glad they delete those threads. Very often the OP has waved the peace flag on page 2 and are still getting a kick-in on page 32.

Gobbycop · 25/11/2020 09:40

I've never heard of mods getting paid.

Massive sites have loads of mods to cover traffic.

Welcometonowhere · 25/11/2020 09:41

I have favourite mods.

I shouldn’t admit that. But I do feel when I report something and I get @DawnMumsnet reply I feel I am in safe hands Grin

I will PM her my details so she can send me my Christmas present now of course Wink

Nicknacky · 25/11/2020 09:42

justanotherneighbourinparadise So lock the threads. No need to delete.

lyralalala · 25/11/2020 09:43

Mumsnet have over 100 paid staff.

The majority of the mods are not doing it out the goodness of their hearts. It’s part of their job

Sparklingbrook · 25/11/2020 09:44

I wouldn't be that fussed about reading a locked thread. Plus once it's locked it would slip off the active list fairly quickly. I like a thread to be 'live'. I feel the same about Classics-dead threads.

Welcometonowhere · 25/11/2020 09:45

The problem with locking the threads is that I think some of you underestimate how upsetting it can be to get an online kicking when vulnerable. It almost becomes a form of self harm.

It also sets the tone for the site more generally, which I don’t think is a good thing. I don’t mind robust and passionate and strong but what does sometimes happen on MN is that a handful of posters can start to dominate the tone of the board(s) and that isn’t a good thing.

Brokenchair1 · 25/11/2020 09:46

I wish they would say why. On the app i just get a oops you have a bad connection which means the thread had gone. I commented on the vegan breastfeeding thread and next time I went to read, poof it was gone. Agree it's annoying not to know why.

Ah a quick google say they do indeed get paid.

For anyone who doesn't want to click the link

Unlike many forum moderators, Mumsnet mods are paid for their work, and many are employed full time. Michael, Lily, and HebeMumsnet do say, however, that they all became involved because of their love for the site. (Mumsnet was launched in March 2000.)

Welcometonowhere · 25/11/2020 09:46

I like classics, but it isn’t what it was

Tenyearsgone · 25/11/2020 09:47

You want MN to leave obvious perv troll threads up?

Welcometonowhere · 25/11/2020 09:48

I have a soft spot for Hebe too, although I thought it was pronounced Hebb-bay for a while. Uneducated plank that I am.

ZoeTurtle · 25/11/2020 10:01

I agree. Most forums won't delete threads (even for made up "privacy concerns") because it's insulting to the people who took the time to respond. And it frustrates users.

AlternativePerspective · 25/11/2020 10:05

The deletions are annoying not least because so many are deleted on the grounds of “the OP has some privacy issues.” When it is likely that they’re just not getting the response they hoped for.

“Taking a look behind the scenes is clearly a message to say they believe it’s a troll but can’t be sure, so likely not a PBP but a story so out there they don’t believe it can be real, but they can’t say so because they can’t know for sure.

I disagree however with the statement that “people post in AIBU, they know what kinds of responses they will get.” We really need to move away from this idea that it’s perfectly ok to say whatever you want to someone and if they don’t like it they’re at fault for posting it in AIBU. There should be a standard protocol across the boards. If you wouldn’t lay into someone on the relationships or mental health board, then it doesn’t make it ok to do so when they post the same thing on AIBU.

And MN have a £350k a month salary bill, I think they can afford to pay their moderators, but will still keep begging for premium membership....

Janegrey333 · 25/11/2020 10:08

They must find it easier to pull the entire thread rather than have to work hard to remove offending posts. 😛

Janegrey333 · 25/11/2020 10:10

I agree, though, I have been noticing more of the “privacy issues” reasons. It seems to be a catch all.

Welcometonowhere · 25/11/2020 10:12

Why shouldn’t it be?

WoolieLiberal · 25/11/2020 10:13

From what I’ve seen before NC there’s perverts that post here about children trying to get stories out of mums so avoid anything about pee poo and periods as it’s probably a shit fetishist looking for wank stories.

Lockheart · 25/11/2020 10:14

If you find it frustrating that threads disappear without giving you closure then may I suggest a book or a TV series instead?

OPs may never come back to update, threads may get deleted for a number of reasons - if it's a good story you want then you're looking in the wrong place.

PrincessNutNut · 25/11/2020 10:14

This has never bothered me. Sure, it's annoying when an OP suddenly becomes concerned about privacy after being roundly told they're in the wrong, but ultimately nobody on here owes you content and they could have never posted it at all. We don't own people's lives and stories, even if they do get a bit arsey about it.

AlternativePerspective · 25/11/2020 10:29

Thinking about it I think it irritates me more sometimes when threads aren’t deleted because they are so obviously troll threads and posters become too invested.

justanotherneighinparadise · 25/11/2020 10:40

I don’t know how locking a thread is any different to removing it 🤷‍♀️

We know how this shit goes down on here so let’s not kids ourselves. The OP ends up divulging more and more personal detail on the behest of the posters and in the hope of making their position appear stronger/acceptable until finally they realise it’s pointless abs likely to make it into the daily mail.

Gobbycop · 25/11/2020 10:46

Ah a quick google say they do indeed get paid.

Fair play, I'm not interested enough to start googling but that's cleared it up.

It's unusual for mods to be paid.
