To be annoyed that the bathrooms are shut?

blackkitty1234 · 23/11/2020 12:08

I’m six months pregnant and unable to hold it. Was out doing my shopping yesterday only to find the public bathrooms are shut due to Covid. Its happened before when I was picking up food from a restaurant. AIBU to think this is ridiculous? Most people can hold it but some can’t. Spare a thought for the elderly, disabled and pregnant folk. 😠

Well I guess if they shut the loos then women and people who can't hold it are put on the urinary leash. So they have to stay home / not venture very far. This isn't about the safety of cleaners at all. With the right ppe the toilets could be cleaned safely. Control the movement of women and disabled people by closing the toilets.

bestbefore · 23/11/2020 14:36

Gov advise is public toilets should be open. You shld email the council if they are closed

they have no covers at the moment

I know, Acorn; I was thinking more of the general principle than the exact timescale, but even in the summer when much was open the availability of loos seemed completely random

As PPs have said it really does seem to vary by area, and frankly it's time some of them sorted their act out

SlopesOff · 23/11/2020 14:44

@PuppyMonkey

I giggled a bit at bathrooms I must admit, or maybe OP is from the US?
I assumed (maybe wrongly) that the OP was in the US.

Having opened the thread thinking it was about actual bathrooms and not public toilets.

Everywhere that’s open for eat in has to have a loo for customers.

I think one issue is that all laws have been trashed.

YellowPostItPad · 23/11/2020 14:54

It's a nightmare for people with Crohn's disease and UC.

Ain't that the truth Hmm

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 23/11/2020 14:59

RADAR keys are for the disabled. Don't buy one if you are not disabled

If its the only means of using a toilet when desperate that is what people will do. I'm going to buy one. I struggle to hold wee for more than 20 minutes or so when I have to go. Nothing wrong with me I just have a small bladder. No way will I take the chance of wetting myself, I'll use whatever loo is accessible.

Coldemort · 23/11/2020 15:00

If men had periods and babies you can guarantee they'd be open.....

TheAlphaandtheOmega · 23/11/2020 15:01

I usually check on lockdownloo.com if we go anywhere so I know if toilets are likely to be open

blackkitty1234 · 23/11/2020 15:28

@Floatyboat

Ridiculous. You are meant to be only shopping briefly for essentials, minimising travel. If you're out longer than an hour you're doing it wrong.
For your information I live in a tier two area in Scotland so we are allowed to go to non-essential shops. If you really want to know I was out shopping for maternity trousers as none of my old ones fit anymore.

Who are you to tell people how long they can take to do their shopping. You don’t know their circumstances, it may take them longer than an hour even if they are only doing essentials.

Anyway the urge to go when pregnant can come on quickly and its easy to get cut short even if you are trying to be in and out.

Yabu.

Nearest Asda is a 30 minute drive away so I'm out for an hour just travelling. You're not the Essential Marshall, you don't get to decide how long people need to be out.

Reedwarbler · 23/11/2020 15:35

@floatyboat where does it say we're only supposed to be out for an hour? Oh I know, it doesn't. Yet another example of someone making up the rules as they fancy.

Farewelltoqualms · 23/11/2020 15:39

@contrmary

Stay indoors. Get your shopping done online, and only go out for 30 minutes at a time. Other posters are correct that flushing toilets disperses virus particles into the air, so they are a big NO at the moment unless they are a self-contained room (no partitioned cubicles).

Plus you can get a "she wee" device for next to nothing if you fancy pissing in an alleyway.

And what are you supposed to do if you live in the country where supermarkets don't deliver and it takes more than 30 minutes to drive there, never mind do the actual shop and drive back again? Not everyone lives in places that are conveniently situated for shops.

And no I don't fancy pissing in an alleyway thank you very much. And women don't just use toilets for peeing either. My DD went to the supermarket the other day and her period came on unexpectedly early and heavily. What do you suggest she does in that circumstance?

BlackPetunia · 23/11/2020 15:43

some cleaning contractors will do it but some won't.....most big organisations are stuck in contracts

BlackPetunia · 23/11/2020 15:46

@Farewelltoqualms be proactive....check the app for a lockdown loo?

Farewelltoqualms · 23/11/2020 15:52
@Farewelltoqualms be proactive....check the app for a lockdown loo?
Of course but the the App is only as effective as there are open loos to identity!

SoupDragon · 23/11/2020 16:34

If its the only means of using a toilet when desperate that is what people will do.

For the disabled it is the only way of using a toilet full stop.

nosswith · 23/11/2020 16:38

Remember all the decisions about Covid are being taken by men in this government. Though one of them has had so many children or pregnancies he has fathered that you would have thought by now he might be aware of the issues.

StrawberrySquash · 23/11/2020 16:51

YANBU. It's a basic public health issue. It's unlikely to be a major transmission location: you are not near a person for any length of time. If you touch a contaminated surface then you can will (hopefully) be washing your hands anyway. It's the only way you can go out for any length of time. I went for a long walk on Saturday and was v grateful to have two park loos open, otherwise it just wouldn't have been practical and that walk did me good. I needed a longish one, not just a local amble.

Exactly. To expect people to stay at home because they can’t get to a loo is just unfair.

@nosswith again the government advise is public toilets should be open.

I don't see what else they can do?!

CorianderLord · 23/11/2020 18:59

Yes it's really annoying. I'm not even pregnant but I need the loo every couple of hours and everywhere is bloody shut.

We've been going for long walks with a guide book at weekends (nothing else to do) and there's not a single loo open anywhere.

Mean we often have to go home early.

CorianderLord · 23/11/2020 19:11

The hospital looks are open near me though. So luckily don't have to hold it on my two hour long trips there

MissConductUS · 23/11/2020 19:19

I haven't seen closed toilets anywhere in the US due to lockdown or covid risk. Having them open lets people wash their hands.
