Can I really do better for this price ?

£375 including bills and council tax for a room about 1.5 miles from the city centre.
1 room, 5/6 people to one kitchen, one oven, mircowave etc. Two fridges.

2 bathrooms.
No communal TV etc. No garden.

Old-fashioned house, not in great condition, very outdated.

The problem is there is a room right next to mine with thin walls, we tested it when it was empty and you can hear every conversation and TV peogram.

A couple live there and sometimes can hear them being intimate at 2 in the morning, or on the phone.

The appeal is that I am not tied into a contract there.
I've been here for 4 months, i'm 30 and feel embarrassed to live here to be honest.

I'm living and paying my own way so I shouldn't be, but until I start earning more, I can't afford much else.
The good thing is that people keep themselves to themselves, it's not one of those houseshares where you're expected to be social and eat together etc.

For this price, would I really find anything better? Really trying to find another job so I can rent at least a better houseshare.

6 people to one kitchen is a pain, especially with Covid about as you don't want to get close.

I had a nice little studio before, but it was just under £600, and due to a change in income I had to give it up.

No one can tell you that without the name of the city. Just look at spare room website and compare.

Grenlei · 22/11/2020 15:20

I can completely understand how you would want somewhere more private. As you say it could be worse (one of my friends lived in a houseshare where there was a huge kitchen diner and they all used to sit in there, cook together etc, my idea of hell but she loved it!)

I don't know where in the country you are, round here (Greater London) it's £500 for a room in a shared house. My partner lives in a cheaper area 200 miles away but even there it's at least 400 plus bills for the smallest flat. So on that basis the deal you have especially given how close you are to the city probably isn't too bad. I totally get wanting your own space though!

Lockheart · 22/11/2020 15:21

Why don't you have a look on spareroom / Rightmove and find out?

ShangelaLaqueefaWadley · 22/11/2020 15:22

It's just a pain walking into the kitchen and seeing it's occupied yet again so having to wait, they probably think the same about me though !
The couple are an embarrassment, they shouldn't be making any noise at 2am on weekdays, it's like they don't even make effort to mask the noise.
The woman also walks round in these tiny little dresses to brush her teeth.

You really don’t like her, do you?

ShangelaLaqueefaWadley · 22/11/2020 15:24

Not really no, as she has loud sex at 2am knowing others are trying to sleep.

It completely depends on pice of area I think. I was paying that roughly a decade ago, to live in a run down hole, where one resident was dealing weed out of his bedroom (London).

I paid a similar amount a few years later, for a lovely house and 2 housemates that were fantastic, but it was in a much cheaper area (not London.)

As for embarrassing, I don't think it is! I stayed in shared living type arrangements until 30 when I met my boyfriend, now husband. It's very common in the south east where people can't afford to buy and rent is expensive too. It doesn't sound like the greatest set up. But if that's what you can afford for now, it's better than getting into debt.

Plus you will really appreciate it when you have a place of your own!

Lilliarna · 22/11/2020 15:36

No one can answer without knowing the area.

I paid more than that per month for a room with it's own shower and kitchenette, 2 shared toilets in the house in 2006/7 in london. Zone 4.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/11/2020 15:39

Oh I agree that it's no embarrassment! If I were single I would be in a shared house and I am in my 30s😁 There is nothing wrong with it if you don't have issues with it. It's so much cheaper. Quite smart option if anything

ChronicallyCurious · 22/11/2020 15:40

What area? That would be very cheap for my city and if I saw something for that price would expect something to be very wrong with it. Could be average for other cities though so depends where you are!

Charleyhorses · 22/11/2020 15:41

If you are unhappy there look for somewhere else.

BurningEars · 22/11/2020 15:41

Whereabouts in the country are you?

DelphineWalsh · 22/11/2020 15:45

Which city? London, thats a good price. Carlisle, not so much.

ShangelaLaqueefaWadley · 22/11/2020 15:48

Manchester

OP posts:
SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/11/2020 15:51

Yeah, I don't think you get much better gor that price so close to the centre in Manchester. I remember seeing some nice ones for about 450 last year when friend thought about moving there, but these were bit further

Catsrcool · 22/11/2020 15:59

This one looks nice m.spareroom.co.uk/flatshare/greater_manchester/manchester/7486522

2bazookas · 22/11/2020 16:00

any chance that if another tenant moves out, you can swap to a quieter room?

Yours has probably been subdivided with a plasterboard partition, but rooms upstairs might have solider walls,

ShalomToYouJackie · 22/11/2020 16:03

There's a fair few rooms/house shares for working professionals on Spare room for £400 or less that include all bills in Manchester City Centre or within 1-2 miles. Have you tried looking on there?

Do they include bills? That sounds pretty cheap if yes
ShangelaLaqueefaWadley · 22/11/2020 16:15

Thanks everyone very kind to look/suggest. It's my fault for taking this place, it was just meant to be a temp thing and it was a no deposit/contract option.
I shouldn't feel embarrassed you're right. I only know one person in London who flatshares but her rent is like double mine. All other friends at this age own their house or at least rent alone/with a partner.
Who cares though doesn't matter what anyone thinks.
Would be very happy with a houseshare that has an en suite and a little kitchenette but even those are over £500. Need to search for a second job.

I'm greater manchester, about 3 or 4 miles outside the city centre (20 mins on the tram) up until recently paid about £400 all in. for a two bed flat share, and about 6 years ago paid £350 for a three bed house share.

ShalomToYouJackie · 22/11/2020 16:19

@SchrodingersImmigrant yes, that's why I said they include all bills 😁 you can advance search on Spareroom to only show options that have bills fully included and then underneath the ad it says what's included

ShalomToYouJackie · 22/11/2020 16:20

Also OP a couple of the house shares on Spareroom say no couples so might be worth checking out 😁
