To think general knowledge quiz shows do not give a measure of intelligence, just of memorisation skills?

I am totally rubbish at all quiz shows, trying to play along on the couch and never know anything! But I don't understand why my family say I'm not that smart just because I don't know some obscure fact about the TV show Frasier, which I've never even seen! Has anyone else been shamed because of this?

Did you know that Key Lime pie has nothing to do, historically, with the Florida Keys? It's name comes from the types of limes supposed to be used in making it!

And those types of limes are called Key limes because... @IcelandicMoss got there before me. I’ll just link the Wikipedia. The part where it lists Key West, Florida as place of origin: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Key_lime_pie

I'm hopeless at quizzes and I feel offended when I've done them as it's like they pick questions I can't answer which other people can answer to shame me, embarrass me and make me look stupid on my lack of knowledge - I feel humiliated and feel like crying as I'm convinced I'm worse than everybody else at quizzes. I hate quizzes for this reason and I avoid them if I can. I've been diagnosed with dyslexia and I think that's why I don't absorb the knowledge needed to answer quiz questions.

How can I feel better about not being good at quizzes as I find this difficult?

@Rose1965 I suggest that you start your own thread, people will only read the original post, and get cross that it's a zombie thread.

Oh a zombie thread!

Just came on to say that being well-informed, picking up and remembering information and having a wide range of interests that you go into deeply is an attribute of intelligence. So there is a link. Clever people tend to remember things and to be well-informed generally...but I admit from personal experience that there are exceptions. I know a doctor who's lack of general knowledge is shocking, for example! Presumably she managed to do well in her science A levels and remember all the stuff medics have to learn???? But she's very narrow in her interests.
