Sleeping late

Is it unusual to sleep in till mid or late morning when well into adulthood? I’m middle aged, sleep terribly, and have always been an early riser. My sister (who doesn’t go out even pre-covid) stays up till about midnight and regularly texts me to tell me she slept till 11:00am or later on the weekend. In your early 20’s when you’re still developing physically and mentally, but by 60?

Is being able to sleep that late common? I’d love to get that much sleep so am not wild about hearing about her amazing sleep abilities!

Our parents were always up and active by 7:30 at the latest. She told me that when she lived away and got divorced her 3 & 5 year olds had to get themselves breakfast as she “could not wake up”.

Partly I’m being prissy, part envy, but mostly I’m wondering how common this is.

I used to love Sunday when I could sleep to 11. I have a baby now and my sleep is shot to pieces.
I'm sure I could lie in though given the chance.

Igglepiggle78 · 21/11/2020 21:17

Before Dd, I’d get up with an alarm for work at around 7-7.30 and at weekends would sleep I until 10.30 ish sometimes..god, it was heaven!
Now, every day I’m woken by my chattering toddler at around 6.30-7. Regardless if it’s a weekday or weekend 😂 I so miss lying in, if you don’t have to have to get up, don’t 🤷🏻‍♀️

unicornparty · 21/11/2020 21:24

7.30am is a lay in here and even then I feel like I've wasted some of the day.

Spidey66 · 21/11/2020 21:31

I love a good lie in till 10 or later.

In my defence, I don't have kids, and during lockdown there's not much to get up for. Get up to sit round the house? No ta.

Waveysnail · 21/11/2020 23:28

I struggle to get up. Can easily lay on to lunchtime. Reading or having doze.

Todaytomorrow09 · 21/11/2020 23:34

I’m not a morning person nor my husband- but we’ve always taken in turns getting up with the kids in the mornings - especially weekends. Now they both older and they are also not morning people - lucky to see them much before 9/10 at the weekend. I wake up regardless at around 6:30/7:00 but am good for nothing a blur of pack lunches coffee breakfast and then work and at weekends easily fall back to sleep!
My wider family the same - except poor BIL who is a morning person once awake he’s up - not good when we’ve all been chatting to the small hours! Great on holiday as he did the towels on the beds Grin

DipSwimSwoosh · 21/11/2020 23:54

My 6 year old gets his own breakfast at the weekends and watches tv. He loves it. My dh and I stay in bed until one of his little sisters wants us. I'm not getting up early so they can wake to the smell of pancakes! I'll make them pancakes later.

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 22/11/2020 00:17

Mine are both over 13, I could lay in bed all day if I wanted aslong as I do dinner they will get breakfast and lunch. I don't btw but I could and I may tomorrow after this wonderful idea.

jessstan1 · 22/11/2020 00:32

@notangelinajolie

Fortunately when my kids were little they shared the same night owl sleeping pattern as me so they were happy to sleep in late too. Early Christmas Day wake ups never happened in our house [santa]
Sounds good to me!
CreamFirstThenJamOnTop · 22/11/2020 00:46

I absolutely love sleep and would definitely sleep in late regularly if I could.... and I did until I had kids!

Me and DH would sometimes spend entire days in bed, dozing, reading, watching tv etc. I loved it!

Now the closest we get once the kids are awake is 30 mins of us all squeezed into our bed for cuddles, then they get bored.

Readandwalk · 22/11/2020 00:52

It's to do with children. Neglectful to stay sleeping for hours while they navigating adult time, trying to get breakfast etc.
However ad a child grew adult I often never get up on Saturdays. Its bliss.
But would obviously never to that either responsibility of children.

MustardMitt · 22/11/2020 00:53

My kids are 11 and 9 now and amuse themselves with the Xbox in the mornings while DH and I sleep in. Normally up by about 10, but have been known to sleep much later.

I've never been a morning person, I've worked a ten minute drive from my office for over a decade and even now I'm WFH and only have to turn on the computer I can easily be late Blush.

TheDowagerDuchess · 22/11/2020 00:58

Thing is, I “simply couldn’t” go to sleep at 8pm, 9pm, 10pm etc

As you see!

It’s a struggle to get to bed. My body just doesn’t want to change states maybe? Or it’s the usual explanation of body clock.

I literally live for the opportunity to lie in.

MustardMitt · 22/11/2020 01:12

@TheDowagerDuchess I'm the same. I had a nap earlier, but I don't normally. I am always up late, but even when I'm not I sleep in. I went to bed at 9 on Thursday and was still woken by my alarm which I snoozed on Friday!

WhatKatyDidNxt · 22/11/2020 01:25

People do love to be superior about their body clock. I get lots done but l am a night owl. Everyone is different after all.

My mum seems to think l will “grow out” of wanting a lie in but it’s not going to happen anytime soon. Especially as lm 40. Definitely not this Sunday, l have worked the last 6 days in a row and deserve it

DoubleDessertPlease · 22/11/2020 01:58

I've never understood why being a lark is considered somehow morally superior.

^This! Obviously I’m a night owl too Smile

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 22/11/2020 02:02

Yes why is it considered morally superior? the hours I am awake and productive are exactly the same as a morning person my body clock is just set differently.

RedDiamond · 22/11/2020 02:06

I am just so envious of anyone who can sleep more than 4/5 hours a night.

I want to be your sister.

Wondering1215 · 22/11/2020 02:08

I'm up at 7am Monday to Friday. Come the weekend I sleep until 11am. My boys are 8 and 5 and enjoy the responsibility of chosing and making their own breakfast at the weekend. Their dad is awake and on weekend duty
I'm not an early bird at all. If I had no responsibilities I'd wake up at 12pm. I look forward to retirement!
