AIBU to ask how much you save for your kids over the year compared to what you spend at Christmas

This has been triggered by the "what do you spend on your kids at Christmas" thread, because looking at the figures I would say we spend less than the top figures on each DC but definitely save quite a lot more "on behalf" of each child when you add up pensions, Isa's and pocket money.

I am just wondering if we are unusual in our thinking? Is it about putting money in their names (which I certainly understand is something we will have to cross when time comes) or is it something else?

BTW I am aware this is a sensitive subject and we are lucky we can do this and it's certainly not meant to be goady.

Nothing. An allowance, phone, travel to school, treats in the weekly shop, meals out and takeaways, birthday and Christmas are plenty!

We have a toddler so no pocket money here yet. We save £50 per month for her at present, and I think we've spent about £50 on her for Christmas (including stocking). She won't end up rich at 18 but if we can keep this going it should be enough for driving lessons or a start towards a house deposit.

i saved for my dc £10 per month but over many years. not enough for a deposit but enough for a first car

We put away around £60 a month per child but this has been more or less depending on the family budget. We spend £150ish per child at Xmas but that includes clothes/books that I'd buy anyway

@Letsgetgoing888 ISAs and pensions.

Yes, that means it's in their names but it's down to us to make sure it's not spaffed up against the wall - in the same way that my parents made it very clear to myself and DS that if we did it would be the last time anything came our way. But then if I went to my parents now and said I was short I would be sent away with a fly in my ear as they believe (and it's true) that they have given me not only a headstart but a decent work ethic so I should be able to support myself.
