AIBU to think that actually toilet paper is really unhygienic

I was doing the washing up and a thought came to me. Don't you think toilet paper is actually really unhygienic?

If you happened to put your finger in a random turd, what would you do? Wipe it with a tissue and call it a day? Or scrub it with soap and water followed by a smell test?

When you think about it, it is insane that we just use toilet paper on our bums. Or do other people give it a little more pampering and I just didn't realise?

@4cats2kids

After having a dump I go outside, drop my knickers and drag my bum along the grass. I learnt to do it off my dog who always has a clean bum. Anyone who does anything else is a minger!
😂😂😂😂

I make use of my cat. He is always milling round my legs when I'm on the loo. So I pick him up and rub him between my arse cheeks.

Cats clean themselves all over, so he's usually fresh and ready for use again within a few hours Grin

Interesting thread. Maybe I'm the only one that does this, but I use any body lotion/baby lotion I have around on toilet paper. Makes the toilet paper moist, without soaking it to disintegration, it smells nice and it's moisturising. 😅

@decoratingnightmare top tip. I'll try this later.

Do all the people that are using biodegradable wipes really understand what is meant by biodegradable?

'When a wipe is described as ‘biodegradable’, this means it willeventuallybreak down into smaller parts.

This will happen by natural processes but could takeany length of time.

With this logic, an item could take 100 years to break down to smaller parts – but because it eventually will, it is still classed as ‘biodegradable’. You can appreciate how this is of little use to your toilets and sluice room machinery which are used multiple times a day.

Just because a wipe breaks down into smaller parts doesn’t mean it automatically becomes kind to the planet.

Many wipes break down into microplastics, which will continue to pollute the environment for many years to come. In fact, it’s estimated that that the average person inhales 74,000 microplastic particles a year and consumes as much as 39,000 to 52,000'

@Rubybluesy

Has no one heard of flushable toilet wipes? Supermarkets are full of them And why you have to shower after using the toilet is beyond me
Yes they are flushable, as in they flush away.

Personally I think these manufacturers should be hit with the bill for clearing the sewers. They might change their wording that people seem to blindly follow without question.

My Dh & DS have asked if you need to cock your leg when doing it? They seemed to (virtually) spill most of the water, after trying this theory out

😂 it does take some practice! And English bathrooms don’t usually have a sealed floor with a drain unlike many other countries. Countries with hoses tend to be designed so it doesn’t matter if you accidentally spray the wall or pour water over the floor.

DH says no need to cock leg 😂🙈 He says men just fill the jug/watering can and reach behind them to soap while pouring from the front, leaning back on the loo!

RattleOfBars · 21/11/2020 10:09

Only the ring piece not entire cheeks 😊😂

I also remember after giving birth, the nurses advised I must wash down below every time I went to the toilet to keep it clean from bacteria, it is also advisable to wash below especially when menstruating

This!
The nurses advised me to do the same, wash lochia, wee and poo away with water. They recommended a squeezy sports bottle filled with warm water! I just used a jug. I always use it when menstruating too, to wash away blood so it doesn’t dry and cause cystitis!

CookPassBabtridge · 21/11/2020 10:17

I always thought it was fine until I lived in the Middle East where they use the little shower hoses next to the toilet.. I loved feeling so clean! Now I'm back in the UK I've settled for wipes (not flushed after) No way could I go back to just toilet paper.. it just can't get it clean.

Oh yes, definitely when things are a bit aggravated!

We're all different shapes, the jug isn't going to work for everyone.
While we're talking about loo roll, may I recommend WhoGivesCrap? 50%of profits go to toilet building in areas where they are needed.

Reminds me of this meme that was around at the height of the toilet paper shortage

Do all the people that are using biodegradable wipes really understand what is meant by biodegradable?

The ones I use are advertised as biodegradable and eco friendly. They disintegrate in my hand though so I tend to use a few at once eg if child needs wiping when we’re out and I have nothing else! And I bin them just in case anyway, in the sanitary bin. I don’t see how toilet paper is any better for the environment than wipes so thin they disintegrate. Hoses are much more eco friendly!

TheKeatingFive · 21/11/2020 10:28

Depends on what they’re made from surely? Plain paper is relatively benign. The more chemicals and manufactured fibres we add, the greater the environmental impact.

TooLittleTooLate80 · 21/11/2020 10:29

I saw a documentary that suggested in the future people will use three sea shells instead of loo roll.

Oh wait, that was Demolition Man.

Many thanks. Will pass this on. I personally think they were just being careless with their water Wink

A lot of those wipes are made from plastics which isn't great. Loo roll breaks down quite easily. Plastic fibres don't.
