AIBU to think that actually toilet paper is really unhygienic

I was doing the washing up and a thought came to me. Don't you think toilet paper is actually really unhygienic?

If you happened to put your finger in a random turd, what would you do? Wipe it with a tissue and call it a day? Or scrub it with soap and water followed by a smell test?

When you think about it, it is insane that we just use toilet paper on our bums. Or do other people give it a little more pampering and I just didn't realise?

@Bloodypunkrockers

There's a whole thread about this

Although the OP called them B days

Worth a read if you enjoy how other people clean their arses

🤣🤣🤣

Yes I buy biodegradable wipes for this reason, although I'm very 'regular' before my morning shower so that works well most days.

MeadowHay · 20/11/2020 17:42

My dad is an immigrant from the ME so well before adolescence we were taught to wash ourselves using the jug of water kept in the bathroom. The jug is what some cultures call a 'lota' although our language's word is different but feel it would be outing to say it as likely unique to that country/language.

I always wet my toilet paper to kind of wash. Then dry with dry.

TheKeatingFive · 20/11/2020 17:46

Are Brits dying of dysentery in their droves compared to countries who use bidets as the norm?

No?

Can’t get too excited about the ‘hygiene’ issues then.

LubaLuca · 20/11/2020 17:48

I use FreshX spray on toilet paper. It's the same result as using a wet wipe, but obviously it's flushable.

MyMajesty · 20/11/2020 17:51

I'd never heard of spray for toilet paper, but found this diy version.
(I haven't tried it but thought you might be interested)

I've only ever used toilet paper but in previous years (perimenopause and all that) have suffered from IBS and that has sometimes meant washing my bum etc in shower...

But I'm sure I'd still prefer to use toilet paper on a daily basis and I won't be getting a bidet etc thanks! What do you after the bidet? dry with a towel or what? and then do you reuse the towel?!

1950s1 · 20/11/2020 17:53

I've seen a number of commenters stating that they use water to clean their bums with no mention of soap. Makes me wonder

My DM used to use wipes, before they were biodegradable.
BigBlueBow · 20/11/2020 17:54

Its an arsehole though? If I got shit on my finger of course id scrub it because I might put it in my mouth, or touch something. Its washed with soap and water once a day and covered with pants the rest of the time, .

always soap with bums - simple soap.
nononovember · 20/11/2020 17:57

I use toilet and baby wipes and then go for a shower straight after.
I only poo once a day and shower every day. I think I'd feel a bit yucky if I didn't have a shower after.

I think this might be just as an extra whilst cleaning up straight after a poo and they would use soap in the shower.
Pyewhacket · 20/11/2020 18:00

We have a bidet in the upstairs bathroom, handy to wash your feet in.

Pyewhacket · 20/11/2020 18:03

You can't put wipes down the kharzi. And if you always take a shower afterwards, what happens if you take a dump at work ?.

GeorgiaMcGraw · 20/11/2020 18:04

@brawsome. Pour the water gently between the legs at the front, while sitting on the loo. It will pour down, via the back end. You may have to lean back a bit. Hard to explain, but it works. Same way water rolls annoyingly along your arms when you wash a dish and lift it up a bit.

FatherTedsBankAccount · 20/11/2020 18:04

I use moist toilet wipes. But in these eco-friendly days, I realise this makes me unpopular.

ReggieCat · 20/11/2020 18:08

I tend not to eat, prepare food or open doors etc with my arse. I use my hands for these things.

You may have sort of have a vague point but what would you like people to do in public toilets - strip to the waist and wash at the public wash basins? (And before the 'eww - wait until you get home to poo' brigade chime in with their prissy nonsense - holding it for possibly hours causes bowl problems and some people have IBS and can't wait anyway.)

Crankley · 20/11/2020 18:11

TheKeatingFive

Just what I was thinking. I've somehow managed to reach my 70s just using loo roll and haven't caught any diseases nor felt the need to have water squirted up my bum.

I would love to see how some of you would cope in a country where the loo is a hole in the ground.

gamerchick · 20/11/2020 18:12

Your post sounds like you don't wash your hands usually after taking a dump OP...

Alez · 20/11/2020 18:13

In the middle East they have a water hose thing. You can get them installed in this country too if you want one!

decoratingnightmare · 20/11/2020 18:14

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

Hello everyone - we're just sticking our heads around the bathroom door to say we've no reason to think the OP is our old pal, the poo troll. They've been around for ages and do not appear to have a predilection for matters scatological. As you were. Wine
😂😂😂😂
Doglove · 20/11/2020 18:14

Wet wipes! Loo roll isn’t enough, need to be thoroughly clean 🙈
