Priti Patel

Is it actually possible to unintentionally bully someone? I always thought there had to be some knowledge of abuse of power - it’s supremely difficult to intimidate or coerce someone accidentally. The fact that the people Priti Patel works with as equals- other ministers - are falling over themselves to say how delightful she is to work with, whereas those who work for her accuse her of bullying surely makes it more likely her behaviour is deliberate bullying? Otherwise, her equals would find her to have an frightening, tyrannical demeanour, too!

I imaging Patel was passing on Cummings instructions to the Civil Servants and they disagreed with her so she shouted and swore at them. Totally unacceptable behaviour and she should be sacked.

This government has a culture of cronyism and bullying though so she will survive. They have a massive majority, and a load of useless MP's who have surrendered their power and just do as they're told.

The evidence of them thinking that that normal rules don't apply to them is they continue to have meeting and attend Parliament so they are all catching COVID Wink

SorryAuntLydia · 20/11/2020 13:18

Priti Patel sounds like a typical shit macho-style bullying boss, although, according to the report, she has now acted on feedback and improved her behaviour.

However, let’s be clear, Priti Patel’s real crime is behaving like all the men around her whilst simultaneously being an uppity brown woman. How very dare she?

I’m not saying I’d like to work for her, but I think I can guess why she was the one complained about and investigated.

MullinerSpec · 20/11/2020 13:27

I've said this on another similar thread:
So Rutnam was senior civil servant during the Windrush scandal, his department gave misleading info to Amber Rudd which meant she resigned and he now feels that he was unfairly treated and bullied because he was doing a sh*t job! Bullying is wrong but what would you do as a manager if you inherit a useless team who won't go and can't be fired because they have a cushy pension and salary.

Look at it this way 2 women Home Secretaries have been subjected to the home office civil service incompetence 1 paid for with loss of her job and the other, PP, being accused of bullying all to get them to work properly. And yes being a woman does have a lot to do with this a man would have got away with it, I'm speaking as a man.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 20/11/2020 13:34

As well as being a bully, she is clearly bonkers. As is Johnson.

How the fuck can she get away with this?

2020 just gets more surreal every day.

Hayeahnobut · 20/11/2020 13:43

@MullinerSpec Nice victim blaming there. The Home Secretary is responsible for the actions of the Home Office. If you can't take responsibility, you shouldn't be in the job.

Hayeahnobut · 20/11/2020 13:44

Please can everyone with Conservative MPs write to them and ask what message this sends to children? You can find their details on this link.

Unsure33 · 20/11/2020 13:45

personally I would not judge without reading the investigation.

All I have heard is that she shouted and swore at people .

Well god forbid some people would work in our office in the 80s , we put up with that all the time plus sexual harassment from some bosses .
I know it was different times then - but I do bet some men in her departments definitely do not like successful women and I am not denying she may be very formidable and not suffer fools but she is a determined woman - is that not what we would encourage ?

Unsure33 · 20/11/2020 13:47

where did it say they had proved "bullying " ?

They said she broke the ministerial code ( would have to check her contract to see if that should result in a warning or dismissal )

I did not see that bullying had been proved ?

nosswith · 20/11/2020 13:47

@Unsure33 whilst agreeing that many men do not like successful women, I would not consider Priti Patel to be one.

Boris Johnson deliberately keeps able Conservative women out of government, and those he gives posts to are given those where there is no political credit to be gained. All Home Secretaries are hated for one reason or another.

flaviaritt · 20/11/2020 13:49

I think it is possible. I think a person can feel bullied by another person who thinks they are merely ‘robust’ or ‘direct’.

What exactly is she supposed to have done?

KaptainKaveman · 20/11/2020 13:51

"Is that not what we would encourage"?
err, no. I would never encourage ANYONE - male or female - to shout , scream, belittle, ridicule and threaten. That sort of behaviour doesn't mean you are strong. It means you are a complete cunt who deserves to be sacked. End of.

Unsure33 · 20/11/2020 13:53

so what happens at your work if you do something wrong ?

you are investigated and get a chance to put things right ?

There are very few things that result in instant dismissal ?

So is that not what has happened here ?

So she shouted and swore - perhaps at someone not doing their job properly ?
Don't men do that all the time ?

I am not saying its acceptable but there are proceedures in place to try and change behaviour ?

Unsure33 · 20/11/2020 13:54

I said encourage women to be determined - I did not condone her alleged behaviour .

nice try at twisting words though .

Hayeahnobut · 20/11/2020 13:54

Had a look at her Facebook page. Most of the 'hate' she receives is from people who are against asylum seekers. Patel has portrayed asylum seekers as criminals and illegals, she purposefully stirred up hate towards these people. But she's failed to manage the problem, she's failed to negotiate a means of safe passage or manage where people arrive by unlawful means.

I've far more sympathy for the people she has demonised, for the people that have suffered and died as a result of her actions, than for her scoring an own goal and getting taunted as a result.

Sakesman · 20/11/2020 13:54

Where can I read what she’s supposed to have done? I’m no fan but swearing and shouting could be anything. Man- I’d love to have got shot of many a boss for occasional shouting and swearing but I live in the real world.

flaviaritt · 20/11/2020 13:54

So she shouted and swore - perhaps at someone not doing their job properly ?
Don't men do that all the time ?

Yes. And they are bullies and should be sacked. The issue I have with this is that I suspect Johnson and some of his male reports shout and swear at people all the time. If that is true and only Priti Patel is going to be sacked for it, that’s sexism. But if she is the only one shouting and swearing, that’s not, and she should face the consequences.

Dishwashersaurous · 20/11/2020 13:55

Isn’t the entire point of bullying that it is unintentional? It’s how the individuals who are being bullied feel defines whether it is bullying?

Surely it’s the me too defence. Oh I didn’t know that I was doing anything wrong when I groped her m’lud.

Sakesman · 20/11/2020 13:56

If only shouting and swearing were this govt only crimes. Can you imagine that arse Boris shouting and swearing. That eedjit can’t even speak or express sadness at 10 million deaths on his watch. You think you’d find his public school wrath scary. Ppft.

flaviaritt · 20/11/2020 13:57

And we also need to understand whether “shouting and swearing” at people means “Where the fuck is my fucking coat?” or “You stupid fat bastard, where’s my ministerial car?”

Hayeahnobut · 20/11/2020 13:57

So she shouted and swore - perhaps at someone not doing their job properly ?
Don't men do that all the time ?

No, men don't do that all the time. If a man does that at work he could rightly be dismissed for gross misconduct.

Do you think it is acceptable to shout and swear at someone for not doing their job correctly?

flaviaritt · 20/11/2020 13:57

Isn’t the entire point of bullying that it is unintentional? It’s how the individuals who are being bullied feel defines whether it is bullying?

That’s rubbish, though.

Sakesman · 20/11/2020 13:59

Lol- flaviaritt

IntermittentParps · 20/11/2020 14:11

Of course she knows she's doing it.

It needs a proper inquiry, not this fucking gimcrack internal thing where it's all done in private and the complainant has no recourse. It's a joke.

jasjas1973 · 20/11/2020 14:21

Breaches of the Ministerial code, have always resulted in resignation or dismissal.
But Johnson is like Trump and the political norms that govern this country no longer apply.

The civil servant who did the inquiry has now resigned instead... amazing.

Johnson said 9 months ago he would back Patel and he has, i wonder why? aside from her brexit views, she seems to have little ability, wasn't she sacked before from Government?

Janedownourlane · 20/11/2020 14:43

Johnson has urged all his people to protect 'The Pritser'. God, he's pathetic!
