People moaning about lower bonuses this year

I think it makes them sound really spoiled. The couple of people moaning are already on huge salaries so I'm sure they'll cope with a less than great year!

@MummmyDayCareNameChangeAGAIN

If people don't expect a bonus then they can't get upset when they don't one! My husband still got his 15k which he was appreciative about but he never factors them in every year. Its a nice added extra.

Why is it people with ‘Mummy’ in their username who can never refrain from bragging? So tacky.

Silentplikebath · 19/11/2020 16:04

I’m very grateful for my £10 PIP Christmas bonus!

LemonBreeland · 19/11/2020 16:11

I think people are entitled to be a little disappointed if they usually get bonuses. But complaining about it is a bit much.

I've recently left a company where we got bonuses, I know that all of my friends there aren't expecting much this year.

It reminds me of a place I worked at years ago when the staff were moaning about our annual pay rise being very low. It was a recession and they were lucky nobody was being made redundant.

QueenPaws · 19/11/2020 16:14

I moan if mine is low! But it's commission for me so yes we do rely on it as our basic wage is low, we expect between £600-1200pm commission
But if it's quieter then yes it'll be lower but we still have a grumble. It's natural

nosswith · 19/11/2020 16:14

Being disappointed is understandable, but moaning about it is not.

PrayingandHoping · 19/11/2020 16:19

In some industries you get a bonus in light of your (unpaid) overtime etc so a bonus really is just part of your salary. So some people so genuinely rely and budget to have it.

ForeverRedSkinhead · 19/11/2020 16:21

If someone has less money than they normally do through no fault of their own they have every right to be annoyed.

Graffitiqueen · 19/11/2020 16:31

My company has made masses of profits because of Covid. Yet they're not paying bonuses or giving any pay rises. They say it's in case there's more of a downturn next year. I can understand their reasoning, but the staff have had to work so hard to cope with all the extra work because of covid, and all those extra profits are likely to end up mostly with shareholders.

Tararararara · 19/11/2020 16:37

That's not what bonuses are for

I think it depends on your sector. Some jobs, bonuses are an expected part of the job and are used to justify a low annual salary. A friend of mine's salary was barely above minimum wage but she got quarterly bonuses of £5k + making her total annual income very healthy. Her bonuses were so consistent that she got a mortgage offer based on them. Thankfully she is not out of that industry but those still in it would likely be screwed now.

Plus not all industries have been similarly affected - its very frustrating to see friends not getting bonuses "because of covid" and then their companies advising better than usual sales figures.

doctorhamster · 19/11/2020 16:38

I think my dh would have every right to complain if he wasn't getting his bonus. He's worked hundreds more hours than he usually would since March, and the company he works for has had a record year. The tax man takes 42% of it anyway, so he isn't the only one to benefit from it.

beepbeeprichie · 19/11/2020 16:45

Neither me nor my husband will get a bonus this year. We’ve been working 50-60 hours a week since lockdown began. Our industry is one which typically looks at total reward as your compensation (ie salary plus bonus) rather than seeing the bonus as a small Christmas extra.
Why shouldn’t I expect it if that’s the norm in the industry? As someone said upstream when bonuses are spent on home improvements or treats it goes back into the economy. Am I grateful we are both still in jobs? Of course but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be disappointed that we won’t get the same take home as last year for doing even more work.

SansaClegane · 19/11/2020 17:33

A £15K bonus Confused

That's more than what I earn in a year; but yeah, you go on moaning about how "pissed off" and hard done by you are (alternatively: how appreciative you are of "that little bit extra" Hmm)

bjjgirl · 19/11/2020 17:34

Dp works in finance and will still be getting his bonus, the bonus is a huge part of the attraction of the job and he has hit his annual target etc. He does not get paid over time for extra hours worked etc.

I work in the emergency services and if I didn't get paid my over time that I worked I would also be livid.

It sounds a lot of money but in banking / finance it really isn't. The companies pay these bonuses to attract and retain talent.

As a police officer who literally works her backside off it took me a long time to get my head around the different pay and bonus structure of my dps job. The fact is that he makes a lot of money for his employer and his job security is performance based, as is his bonus structure.

Jellycatspyjamas · 19/11/2020 17:44

That's not what bonuses are for

I don’t think you get to decide that for someone else.

WhatKatyDidNxt · 19/11/2020 17:47

YANBU some people don’t even have a job or have had pay cuts. Yep a lot of people have worked harder (myself included) but no bonus

People shouldn’t spend their bonuses before they receive them or rely on them. They’re never guaranteed

nancybotwinbloom · 19/11/2020 17:51

I see my bonus as what it is. A bonus.

Not guaranteed but nice to get.

I've had the best sales year in my career this year but I understand I may not get my normal bonus or even anything because of Covid.

It's a shame but it is what it is.

What will piss me off is that the senior managements will probably be unaffected.

If they can give bonus it should be for everyone not because of your job role.

I can also see the argument for furloughed vs non furloughed. There are people at my place of work who think that those who were furloughed shouldn't get one but it wasn t their choice to be furloughed but the ones who were not picked up the slack.

I'm glad I'm not making these decisions because your dammed either way aren't you.

nancybotwinbloom · 19/11/2020 17:52

Personally I think everyone should get one or none.

CremeEggThief · 19/11/2020 17:52

I would like anyone receiving a bonus this year to consider donating some or all of it to charity, especially a foodbank. I donated money to charity/foodbanks every week during the first lockdown, even though I was on furlough from a minimum wage job, and money towards a local foodbank over October half-term, when the government refused to help families out with a free school meal.
I like to think I would make that choice if I ever received a bonus. (Have never had one.)

missyB1 · 19/11/2020 17:53

Dh and I have given the best years of our lives to the NHS, what is a bonus? 🤔

nancybotwinbloom · 19/11/2020 17:56

I do @CremeEggThief I use some of my bonus to buy stuff and I make Christmas Eve boxes for my local hospital for children who are in hospital for Christmas.

My local children's hospital is Alder Hey if anyone wants to donate.

I donate or make something for the hospital every year.

SingingSands · 19/11/2020 17:56

We're not getting bonuses, or so I thought. Apparently if you complain loudly enough and long enough at the right people then you will get a bonus Hmm

I am pretty pissed off to discover this, but hey ho. I'll play nice and go after the increased salary review next year, which is worth more to me than a bonus.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 19/11/2020 17:58

What’s a bonus? I don’t get one here and the last place I worked was a charity so we didn’t get one there either!

I get why people complain if they are used to getting one but these days people need to released it’s not a certainty, and you are lucky to have a job!

bingoitsadingo · 19/11/2020 18:03

I think it’s fair enough to be pissed off if your company has done well out of COVID but hasn’t passed that on to the people doing the work! Whether that’s no bonus or no pay rise or whatever.
Complaining about it to anyone in a worse position is obviously a dick move.

CremeEggThief · 19/11/2020 18:03

That's lovely of you, @nancybotwinbloom.😍
