Posting here for traffic.

Recently bought a Dr Brown's Bottle Steriliser. Instructions clearly state distilled water must be used.

Don't seem to be able to find distilled water readily available anywhere.. except Amazon and Halfords (for car batteries). DP is reluctant to buy from Amazon and we're a bit sceptical about using water advertised for car batteries.

All search results return serilised water, de-ionised water and mineral water.. but not distilled water.

Does anyone else have a Dr Brown's Bottle Steriliser? What water are you using?

Does anyone know where I can buy distilled water?????? I'm in London.

If it's just so it doesn't have hardness minerals, de-ionised water will be fine.

BLToutanowhere · 18/11/2020 23:50

Cpap machines say they need distilled water but boiled and cooled water works fine with them.

Thespottytortoise · 19/11/2020 00:05

Just use tap water. It's what 99.999% of the population use (me included).Ife never heard of anyone faffing around with getting distilled water.

MoonJelly · 19/11/2020 00:10

With the amount of money you will end up spending on buying distilled water, you could probably cover the cost of the steriliser several times over. Just used boiled water.

MadameBlobby · 19/11/2020 00:12

I’d just use tap water, but then I live in a soft water area and never had to descale anything in my life.

As others have said stuff sold in shops as ironing water is I think distilled water. Not that I have ever bought it

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 19/11/2020 00:16

it won't be distilled, but why not use a brita filter - and maybe boil and cool for good measure?

the brita filter jug certainly stops build up of scale in my kettle - I have a glass one, and on the rare occasion start seeing scale, every time I've missed changing the filter.

the distilled water warning is probably the equivalent of a "dry clean only" label on a bog standard t-shirt.

INeedNewShoes · 19/11/2020 01:25

I get distilled water at our local hardware shop.

TheSandgroper · 19/11/2020 04:13

Dehumidifier.

custardbear · 19/11/2020 04:34

It sure if they supply to public, but scientific suppliers (Thermo Fisher, Sigma) spring to mind

Eng123 · 19/11/2020 06:36

@QuestionableMouse
Boiling does not remove limescale or any other mineral content. You may leave some mineral content behind on the kettle hearing element but there is plenty left in the water. When water is boiled the mineral content can not be carried in the vapour so when that vapour is collected and condensed (distilation) it has a very low mineral content.
Just boiling water can actually increase the mineral content as the water evaporates it leaves the same amount of minerals behind but dissolved in less water, obviously some gets stuck to the container walls and is not free in the liquid.

bobbiester · 19/11/2020 06:39

The only thing that will happen if you use regular water is the device will scale up more quickly. If you're in a hard water area this will happen even more quickly.

Do not use bottled mineral water - that would give you even more scale.

So you DP is reluctant to buy from Amazon? Tell DP "tough". We're in a lockdown. If you want it - just get it from Amazon and stop worrying!

Ifailed · 19/11/2020 06:44

OP, just google deionized water in your area, plenty of places will supply it in bulk at pence a litre.

Penners99 · 19/11/2020 06:49

Deionised water from Tesco. £1.5 for 2.5l.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 19/11/2020 06:50

@Wishitsnows

Is distilled water not just boil the kettle then let it cool?
No, it's only the cooled vapours.

Or more technically what Eng said.

But personally, having used a million different sterilisers overs the years, I'd just used tap water. Filtered water if the baby is newborn & having loads of bottles.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 19/11/2020 06:57

As others have said, deionised water from Wilko, Tesco or Amazon, I use it in my steam cleaner

AlwaysLatte · 19/11/2020 07:37

Interested too, my son has a speaker with water and lights in it, and the instructions say to fill with distilled water. I bought some on Amazon for £7 and they cancelled the order, so back to square one!

AlwaysLatte · 19/11/2020 07:39

I get distilled water at our local hardware shop.
Good idea! We have one of those shops that sells everything.

MaskingForIt · 19/11/2020 07:42

@Wishitsnows

Is distilled water not just boil the kettle then let it cool?
No, that’s water which has been boiled and then cooled.

Distilled water is made by boiling water, trapping the steam and cooling it back to liquid water.

Seems overkill for sterilising bottles, but I guess there must be a market for it.

TheGreatWave · 19/11/2020 08:08

If you are that concerned why not simply buy a home distiller? Seems easier than trying to get water from places.

Or just use tap water as everyone else has.

I appreciate this is an old thread, but I’m sure will benefit current and future owners. I reached out to Dr. Browns to gain clarity on warranty when using tap water:-

No, it doesn’t void the warranty, that is something the USA put in the manual, but we would always replace a faulty unit as long it is under the 1-year warranty. We would also advise that just using neat white vinegar always works better, if you pop some neat white vinegar on the heat plate and leave to sit for 2 hours the scale will lift off the heat plate, you can use a washing up sponge as well to remove any stubborn scale. Then if you rinse the vinegar off the heat plate it should look brand new.
