Wondering if I should buy a small double to ease bedroom issues but are they really that much bigger than a single. I know the measurements BTW just mean in terms of sleeping in one with another person!!

I am currently sleeping in a small double and wouldn’t want to share it.

AnathemaPulsifer · 18/11/2020 13:58

If you can fit in a normal double that would be better, but if you’re expecting two people to share a bed a small double is considerably better than a single!

GreyishDays · 18/11/2020 13:58

I used to share a small double while visiting in laws. It wasn’t great but it was so so much better than a single.

helloxhristmas · 18/11/2020 13:59

I wouldn't want to share a small double, they're pretty small. As a one off it would be ok, better than sharing a single.

makemyweek · 18/11/2020 13:59

We have a small double in my sons room and it will easily sleep two when needed for guests (and our guests don't tend to be particularly small). We have used it countless times over the years and everyone who has slept in it has found it perfectly comfortable. They are mainly family so not just being polite about their comfort. Smile

GreyishDays · 18/11/2020 14:02

Are you sure you have the dimensions right? I’m thinking you can see there is quite a difference. Smile
Also for other people to have to hand:

Width in feet =

Single 3’
Small double 4’
Double 4.5’

Snugglepumpkin · 18/11/2020 14:10

It is much better than a single.

Any 2 people expected to sleep together in one bed are going to prefer a small double to a single.

Brighterthansunflowers · 18/11/2020 14:25

Well obviously a double is better than a small double. But a small double is better than a single. From the measurements a PP posted, it’s 1/3 better than a single!

inmyshoos · 18/11/2020 14:26

It's only for occasional use when my ds and his girlfriend stay. They currently share a single, by choice as there are two.... But in the new room I can't fit two singles and a double is a very tight fit

My parents always had a small double - and they didn't even get on that well most of the time! It's a lovely size for a single sleeper, but a bit cramped for two people, in my opinion - OK for occasional use, but I always wondered how my parents put up with it - and why?

OverTheRubicon · 18/11/2020 14:30

I have a small double, it really is much better than a single (though obviously less good than a larger bed).

My parents share it when they come, and even for single visitors it's far more comfortable especially for taller and larger people.

Now it's gone from spare bed to my eldest's bed and I like that too, as it's big enough for him to sometimes share with a sibling or for me to snuggle up and read together easily or to doze with him if he's ill.

I really wouldn't want it as my full time bed to share with an adult though.

MrsToothyBitch · 18/11/2020 14:31

I love mine for when it's just me in it. With DP as well we can do it but it's a bit tight if one of us goes on a land grab! I have quite a small room or I'd upsize.

inmyshoos · 18/11/2020 14:31

OK sounds fine for what I need. Thanks guys Smile

Bibidy · 18/11/2020 14:38

I shared a small double with my DP for years, it was totally fine and served well as a bed for 2. We did have a double duvet on it. We wouldn't have been able to share a single.

Sunnyjac · 18/11/2020 15:37

I thought you were talking about shots Blush

MereDintofPandiculation · 18/11/2020 16:07

They currently share a single, by choice as there are two I imagine being in the same bed trumps everything else. I think they would prefer a small double.

I once shared a 2ft single, despite there being 4 unoccupied 2ft 6 bunk beds in the adjoining room. For me (us) it was the presence of a stove in the room with the 2ft, and the absence of any heating in the other room. It wasn't that we preferred the added cosiness of a 2ft bed.

thecatsthecats · 18/11/2020 16:21

Well, obviously it's about 30cm bigger than a single.

And since human beings are measured in cm, more centimetres are better for fitting them in. It's very odd to think that more space WOULDN'T be better.

Human shoulders are usually the widest point, between 40-50cm. So a single can theoretically get two people crammed in against each other whilst a small double allows a small gap.

Dyrne · 18/11/2020 16:29

Have you considered getting a day bed? Takes up the same space as a single day-to-day but pulls out into a double if needed. My brother has that in his spare room and it works really well - they can keep some storage in that room and when they have couples staying over they just hung it in their bedroom for the night and pull out the bed.

user1493413286 · 18/11/2020 16:33

DH and I have shared a small double without too many problems (and he’s not a small person) but we’d never manage in a single. We have a small double in our spare room and it’s fine for the occasional night.

WeAllHaveWings · 18/11/2020 16:35

Get them bunk beds if they want space to sleep 🤣

dh and I shared a single when we were courting, when you are young and all loved up you don't care!

We have a super king now! 🤷‍♀️

Ragwort · 18/11/2020 16:37

Are you sure guests are comfortable in a small double? We used to be given a small double when we visited a relative, my DH would just sleep on the floor Grin, most uncomfortable night ever . .. we were too polite to complain but we started using a hotel whenever we visited .... they would always say 'you are very welcome to stay with us' ..
No thanks.

Dyrne · 18/11/2020 16:40

Yeah agree that small doubles are awful to stay in but we’d never say anything. Same with shitty pillows or thin curtains.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/11/2020 16:42

We have a small double inDDs room. When we have guests she then moved in with her sister (in bunk beds, but they often share a bunk) and couple adult guests use the bed. Room isn't big enough for a full size double.
The small double is a lot bigger than a single!

Proudboomer · 18/11/2020 16:51

My son has a small double with his girlfriend. He is 6ft 2 and skinny and she is 5ft and very petit. They don’t seem to have any problem.

movingonup20 · 18/11/2020 16:52

Small double is useful if the room is too small for a 4'6 and you have older teens/young adults with partners.
