Wondering if I should buy a small double to ease bedroom issues but are they really that much bigger than a single. I know the measurements BTW just mean in terms of sleeping in one with another person!!

Honestly, my brother and sister-in-law have slept in a small double numerous times and he would not hold back in telling me if it was uncomfortable. Yes, it's smaller but totally doable. Ours is against one wall (tiny room) which may make a difference in being able to get right to the edge (without falling off).

As a pp said, it just might be OK for young couples at the start of a passionate relationship.... Grin.

Get them bunk beds if they want space to sleep But they don't! OP says they're currently sleeping in one single and have another single available which they don't sleep in. So clearly they'd be better in a small double. Only problem would be when other guests came - a single guest would be happy in a small double, but a couple might wish OP had kept the two separate singles.

@MereDintofPandiculation

They currently share a single, by choice as there are two I imagine being in the same bed trumps everything else. I think they would prefer a small double.

I once shared a 2ft single, despite there being 4 unoccupied 2ft 6 bunk beds in the adjoining room. For me (us) it was the presence of a stove in the room with the 2ft, and the absence of any heating in the other room. It wasn't that we preferred the added cosiness of a 2ft bed.

Shared a 2ft bed??? Are you serious? I didn't even think beds came that narrow.

My tip for making a small double work is put it in a corner. That give one person the opinion of sleeping right up against the edge and wall rather than having two people conscious of the edge with a gap.

We had a small double when we first moved out, from my old bedroom. It’s fine for occasional use but every night for 2 years was a killer. We’ve got a double now and both sleep better. I’d get one if it’s for a weekend guest but not for 2 to sleep in permanently

Beds in caravans and on boats are often that size. Maybe in hostels and bothies too, but I've never used those.

In the OPs situation, if there's space for a small double, that sounds like a solution if you want to spend the money. But if you want to use this room as something other than a guest room, might a good sofa bed be a better use of the space?

DS has a small double and its perfect for his room which is long and narrow. A double duvet is fine for the top bed covers but not all stores do fitted sheets to fit a 4ft bed (dunelm do). I also found that the bed and the fitted sheets are usually the same price as a standard double.

I had a small double from a teenager upwards. When I got old enough to start sharing it, it was very very cramped. I found it very uncomfortable and ended up replacing it with a super king asap. I can't sleep with anyone touching me so never slept well on the small one.

It's fine for a single person or the occasional night here and there but I would much rather have a more cramped bedroom and better sleep.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/11/2020 08:46

Depends a lot IMO on who’s going to be sharing it. Young people or much older DPs/in-laws?

When much younger and we were both sleeping like logs I’d happily share even a single with dh.

Nowadays, sleeping much less well, I find even a standard double too cramped for two of us. I recently booked a hotel room with twin beds, when we had to be away for one emergency night, and the only alternative was a standard double.

BubblyBarbara · 19/11/2020 08:49

Anything less than an actual double (that is double the size of a single) would do my head in nowadays.

Icenii · 19/11/2020 08:56

I'm under 5 foot and really disliked it. Anyone breathing near me is irrating! Looks like others don't mind.

In our small room we have gone from a small double to an IKEA day bed that is a double when pulled out, although looks bigger. I stuck a desk in there too and now have an office with a sofa.
