Nursery not insisting on a Covid test dispute high temp - AIBU

I work at the nursery my son attends. Nursery received a phone call from a parent yesterday saying that their child had a high temp. Parent also informed us that the child had received the nasal flu vaccine last Thursday. The parent did not get a Covid test for the child. Nursery let the child in today. When I arrived at work and saw that the child had been allowed to attend I took my child straight back home with me so I’m currently not working. Vote you YABU if you agree that the nursery was correct in letting the child attend today or YANBU if you think I was right to remove myself and my child.

I know our nursery tell parents if the child’s temperature does not come down with Calpol and lasts more than 24 hours to go for a test.

MotherForker · 17/11/2020 21:59

They aren't allowed to insist on a test, it's as simple as that.

ellentree · 17/11/2020 22:00

YANBU. I removed my child from school when I knew someone with symptoms wasn't tested and went back.

Comefromaway · 17/11/2020 22:01

They aren’t allowed to insist on a test that’s true but the child should (having had a main symptom) now be isolating for 10 days and the nursery should not have allowed them back.

coffeeforone · 17/11/2020 22:03

I'd say YABU. Not sure the nursery can insist on a covid test for every baby/toddler temp spike.

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 17/11/2020 22:07

Ours specifically said to tell them when ours had had their flu spray as a spike in temp afterwards could be dealt with differently to just a random temp

Rosebel · 17/11/2020 22:08

Perhaps they can't insist on a test but surely they can refuse to let the child attend.
I wouldn't be happy. I'm not happy with my daughter's school who had a child with a high temperature in today (temperature was taken at school) but didn't send her home. I won't be impressed if my daughter gets sick.

damnthisvirusandmarriage · 17/11/2020 22:08

My kids had the flu vaccine and we received an email stating no need to follow rcovid rules is they develop fever after vaccine.

Bex2110 · 17/11/2020 22:10

@Comefromaway yes, I think you’re right. I wasn’t aware that settings couldn’t insist on a test, however I did think that as everyone should be following the guidance the parents should have gotten the child tested anyway and the nursery should have asked the child to self isolate.

OP posts:
StripyHorse · 17/11/2020 22:11

If no test has been done they should isolate for 10 days.

And I get that it's a nightmare with babies and toddlers - I remember mine having temperatures at various times over the years - but current circumstances need more caution.

jomaIone · 17/11/2020 22:11

I didn't think you got a fever with the nasal spray flu vaccine, only the injected one.

Still, any temp they should be isolating for 10 days.

Bex2110 · 17/11/2020 22:12

@StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff @damnthisvirusandmarriage but how long after the vaccine can a fever be associated with it? This was on the 4th day after the vaccine.

17bluebirds · 17/11/2020 22:15

They can't Insist on a test, anymore tham they can insist the child has any other medical procedure.
But they should have a policy of no admission for 14 days to a child with a temp.

As a staff member you should know the policy and if they haven't adhered to it, you can talk to the manager, I'm sure.

Bex2110 · 17/11/2020 22:15

@jomaIone the NHS website doesn’t list a temp as a side effect of the nasal vaccine only of the injection. I’m at a loss as to when to send my son back there now

OP posts:
Bex2110 · 17/11/2020 22:16

@17bluebirds I had a conversation with the manager today. She was the one who let the child in. I just feel like it was irresponsible

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 17/11/2020 22:17

I don’t know tbh, that’s all we were told. I assumed if DC came down with a temp after the vaccine while at nursery they’d let us know if it was a problem. They told us there was different guidance for this particular scenario.

17bluebirds · 17/11/2020 22:18

What does the policy say?

Hugosmugo · 17/11/2020 22:19

Was it a high temp or a fever? There is a difference

Bex2110 · 17/11/2020 22:22

@17bluebirds The policy says if the child receives a negative test then they will be allowed back to the nursery. If they don’t get tested then they need to isolate for the correct amount of time. The manager today says that she just makes a judgement as she sees fit. She argued that there could be children there that are asymptomatic so it’s no different

Quarterback11 · 17/11/2020 22:22

My ds had a temp after the nasal flu vaccine, it is a side effect.

I had a temp due to an infection and was only given a sick cert for 2 days off work. 10 days would have been nice.

Must be different if they know why they have a temp. Chances of covid temp at the same time would unlikely hopefully.

Bex2110 · 17/11/2020 22:24

@Hugosmugo the guidance states that anyone with a high temp should be tested, it doesn’t differentiate between a fever and a high temp

OP posts:
Bex2110 · 17/11/2020 22:25

@Quarterback11 I agree that the chances are that the temp was due to the vaccine but surely in these circumstance it’s better to get tested to know for sure; if not for that child then for all the others they come into contact with?

My son had his nasal flu spray last Friday. The practice nurse specifically told me NOT to get a covid test if he spiked a temperature. ( he didn’t, but I would have followed her advice if he had and referred nursery to my GP practice to confirm the position.)

17bluebirds · 17/11/2020 22:29

Then you are correct, the child should not be in.
But I'm not sure what you can do about it.
What have they said about you not being in work?

Bigchicken · 17/11/2020 22:29

I think the law is that the child and family should be self-isolating. I'm pretty sure you can be fined for not following this. So YANBU, the parents are breaking the law and the nursery should not be letting the child attend with a temperature.
