Father in Law stole my stuff

TLDR: Father in law stole my dvd collection and claims he has thrown them away. AIBU to be so angry and upset over this and want the money to replace them or should I just let it go?

We were renting from FIL and had to move suddenly to very small flat. He said we could keep our stuff at his place until we found somewhere bigger/could pack it up into storage. 9 months later after numerous visits to retrieve certain things my entire DVD collection (probs about £1000 to replace everything) is missing from the cupboard it was in. Asked if he knew where they were, he admits he took them bc he thought I didnt want them as they had been there so long. Says he has thrown them out
Apparently he tried them in a CD PLAYER and they didnt work and only has 2 or 3 left.
AIBU to be so angry and upset over this and to want the money to replace them?! I know they are just pieces of plastic but I spent so much time and money building my collection.
I am also suspicious as to if this is really what happened or if he has sold them. Any advice is appreciated

Just because you can only sell them for a few pence doesn't mean you can buy them for them for that, especially specific titles. Not everything is available on streaming, I would be upset.

There’s no way they would cost 1000£ to replace - 12 years ago I paid 120£ for the sex and the city box set - saw it in a charity shop recently for £2 😂

Your collection was probably now pretty worthless - sorry

ComeOnBabyHauntMyBubble · 17/11/2020 22:56

While you were there were you paying full market rent?

You would need to be lucky enough to go to the right charity shop or car boot to get exactly what you want to replace and get them that cheap, the S&C boxset is over £30 on amazon.

And if they weren't , it makes his actions ok?
refriedbeanstalk · 17/11/2020 23:03

But they're mostly going for around £7 on eBay. DVDs are worth very very little. People near me keep trying to freecycle their carefully curated collections and nobody is taking them.

ConquestEmpireHungerPlague · 17/11/2020 23:05

Why is everyone being so snotty to the OP? Her FIL said they could store everything for as long as they needed. There's no sense in which she asked for it by leaving her stuff there so long. And loads of people still use DVDs. Not everyone uses streaming services although everyone who posts on MN trying to understand why they have no money left at the end of the month does, it's true.

I reckon he's nicked them, OP. Everyone saying how cheap and worthless they are hasn't bought new DVDs recently.

Please explain the relevance here?

Your statement has no legal substance if you’re inferring that this somehow makes it okay for him not to give her notice before disposing of her things.

I’ve still got a massive VHS collection, if my FIL threw that out I’d be well pissed off. Worthless to most, but films that you can’t get hold of easily if at all now.

OP, can you name change back to the one you posted as? Otherwise your replies aren’t marked as being the OP.

People massively overvalue antiques.

"Umm. Just ask him to provide an online subscription service as your Xmas present.
He's done you a favour really decluttering your media collection. Can you even get dvd players anymore?"

Some people prefer physical media such as myself. So much of a fan I have a classic console collection with entries older than I am. Not everything is available on one subscription service. They might like having something to show off to visitors, like my manga and anime collection. There might be sentimental attachment to some items. He's bang out of order for throwing out what wasn't his to do so.

Must have been a really big cupboard, they are like 50p to £2.00 in CEX 2nd hand lol
