I saw a woman wearing a mask at Sainsbury's and written on the mask was: "I can't breathe".

I think this is in very poor taste, or am I being overly dramatic?

She probably got it earlier this year at a BLM protest. My DC have them too.

JillofTrades · 17/11/2020 19:29

Yanbu. Very offensive.

CatherineSanderson · 17/11/2020 19:30

I'd have thought it was a BLM mask?

thekoalassocks · 17/11/2020 19:32

Pardon my stupidity but I don't understand why it's offensive?

HollyBollyBooBoo · 17/11/2020 19:34

It's a political statement, nothing offensive about it.

berrygirlie · 17/11/2020 19:34

Why would it be offensive?

" "I can't breathe" is a slogan associated with the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States. The phrase originates from the last words of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man who was killed in 2014 after being put in a chokehold by New York City Police. A number of other African-Americans, such as Javier Ambler, Manuel Ellis, Elijah McClain, and George Floyd, have said the same phrase prior to dying during similar law-enforcement encounters. According to a 2020 report by the New York Times, the phrase has been used by over 70 people who died in police custody.

The phrase is now used in worldwide protest against police brutality in the United States and against the lack of police accountability due to qualified immunity."

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 17/11/2020 19:34

Its a BLM mask. Not offensive at all.

katy1213 · 17/11/2020 19:35

Overly dramatic.

Why is showing her support for the BLM movement in poor taste?

Coffeeandaride · 17/11/2020 19:38

I’d assume it was a political statement about BLM and not offensive

Why is different to a T-Shirt or canvas bag, if you don't mind me asking though @Honeybobbin?

Thewithesarehere · 17/11/2020 19:39

It’s a political statement. Her mask, her rules. YABU

Feelingthelobe · 17/11/2020 19:40

Poor taste Shock. Omg people on here make me laugh. What planet do you people live on?

It’s a political statement ffs. Even if it was a joke you must be a special kind of sensitive to be offended by stuff like that

@Honeybobbin Right but is support for a cause not a good thing anyway? Some slogans can be applicable to other situations, but I still think they're OK to use (in my book anyway, just opinion)

@Honeybobbin I guess I just see it as (though it's something that helps in a Covid situation) to a certain extent it's also a fashion statement on a sociological level - hence why you can get them with slogans or flowers or skull and cross bones or anything you like. People sometimes match their masks to their clothing, so I think it's good if people are standing up and showing they support BLM

CoronaBollox · 17/11/2020 19:46

They are worn at the protests that started way before the pandemic, or masking tape covering the mouth with "I cant breathe" along with tshirts etc. Not offensive. Just a statement.

Doingitaloneandproud · 17/11/2020 19:50

I don't see anything wrong with it, it's support for BLM. Not offensive IMO

OhCaptain · 17/11/2020 19:52

@Honeybobbin you clearly don’t understand the movement.

redkenso · 17/11/2020 19:55

If it's a BLM one then no, she's not being unreasonable. If it's a Covid related thing then she is. I wasn't aware that it was a BLM thing.

Feelingthelobe · 17/11/2020 19:56
@Honeybobbin you clearly don’t understand the movement.
Even without the political statement behind it, if it was just a joke it would still be JUST A JOKE! Can’t believe people have time in their lives to see something like that and do more than raise a slight smile and move on with their lives.

Must be ace to have so little to ponder in your day that you can give something like this headspace.

PeggyPorschen · 17/11/2020 20:00

Even if it wasn't for BLM but about Covid, how is that offensive?

She is wearing a mask, she is allowed to have an opinion.
If nothing else, she should be applauded for her way to complain, still wearing the mask...

So either way, you are ridiculously BU.

I love living in a country where you can wear bad taste slogans anyway. This one is not one of them.
