I saw a woman wearing a mask at Sainsbury's and written on the mask was: "I can't breathe".

I think this is in very poor taste, or am I being overly dramatic?

It's def a souvenir of BLM and this greatly offends me! I would never support violent thugs or kneel infront of them!!!

Thefaceofboe · 17/11/2020 21:51

Imagine finding that offensive.

JuliaJohnston · 17/11/2020 22:00

Putting it on a mask that thousands of people claim they can't wear as it restricts their breathing is in poor taste, of course it is.
Put it on a T-shirt like the rest of humanity, ffs.

Changechangychange · 17/11/2020 22:06

@Honeybobbin

Because people complain about not being able to breath in their masks! So it's like comparing my mild annoyance in tesco to George Floyd's death! It comes across as a piss take. I can't believe people aren't seeing this.
People made those masks specifically to wear to socially-distanced BLM marches. Both to reduce the risk of covid transmission to other protesters, and as a visual representation that their voices were not being heard.

She will have made it to wear at a march, not to Sainsbury’s. She’s just continued to wear hers around town. Maybe her regular mask is in the wash.

LeopardsCANTChangeTheirSpots · 17/11/2020 22:13

Don't necessarily consider it offensive.

Recognise it as BLM, but out of the context of a protest, and on a face mask, I'd assume it was a comment about mask-wearing too. In which case I'd just think "they need to grow up a bit".

Anyone who says that about mask-wearing makes it sound as though they have a pillow strapped over their face. What are their masks made of?!

If it was just a political statement in support of BLM, shouldn't cause offense - black lives don't just matter while there's a protest happening.

Left your sarcasm lock on?

I hope.

I didn't know that was a BLM 'slogan' so I would have thought it was some kind of snarky joke about having to wear a mask and would have found it in poor taste as Covid patients can't breathe.

BritWifeinUSA · 17/11/2020 22:23

Considering some of the political statements I’ve seen on masks it’s nothing to get worked up over.

caringcarer · 17/11/2020 22:26

A lot of asthmatic people really do struggle to breath whilst wearing a mask. So yes it is in poor taste.

fuzzymoon · 17/11/2020 22:39

The slogan is not inappropriate but it shouldn't be on the mask as people who have Covid which the mask is linked to often can't breath. It causes an important statement to be misinterpreted.

Untangled87 · 17/11/2020 22:40

My initial reaction was to think that it was a really poor taste joke that was playing on George Floyd's words. I guess because most slogans on face masks are jokey, and you get so many whingers making a fuss about having to wear a little cloth face mask.

But yeah, it could equally be worn by someone mocking the BLM movement or someone who was a member of the BLM movement. Or someone who just didn't associate that phrase with George Floyd at all.

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 17/11/2020 23:41

Support for BLM isn't offensive to you is it OP?

Leannethom85 · 17/11/2020 23:52

Personally think we should concern ourselves with the rising knife crime amongst youths and gang cultures in the UK, rather than what's going on over in America.

Nothavingfunrightnow · 18/11/2020 17:33

Fucking hell, I've stirred up a hornets' nest.

TL:DR all replies.

Yes, I know the slogan relates to the BLM movement. The reason I questioned my reaction to it, was for that very reason. George Floyd uttered those words a number of times while he was being murdered. Some self entitled fuckwits complain that they cannot breathe while wearing a mask.

Not bring able to breathe while wearing a mask is markedly different from not being able to breathe because some fucker has his knee in your back.

It's interesting to see how divided people are over this.
