To isolate at work?!

PackItUp · 17/11/2020 15:49

Are we mad for considering this? I don't see why it would be against the rules personally...

Me and DH own a business. It's just us. We needed a space to run it from so own a workshop a short time from our house. It has its own facilities including toilet, small kitchen, office, electric etc...

We are now having to isolate due to close contact with a positive case and frankly, we can't afford to not work.

Considering we have this space, would we be mad to just move into work essentially for 2 weeks?! 😂 It would be doable although not as comfy as home obviously but it means we can continue to do our work!

I don't see why not, presuming that you wouldn't come into contact with anyone. I guess the only issue is that you'd have to leave home to get there, but I don't think you're unreasonable to want to do this.

PackItUp · 17/11/2020 15:55

Yes that's the only thing. I would have to leave now to go there (DH already there). Thinking I just pack the car up with a suitcase of clothes and some toiletries, food and duvet etc... And nip over there! It's under 5 mins in the car so strictly speaking yes it's breaking the rules but a tiny amount? 😬

No cleaner etc or anything? Also cant go back and forth at all

LaurieFairyCake · 17/11/2020 15:59

Blow up bed?

Get groceries delivered ? Plus take away?

Do it Grin

PackItUp · 17/11/2020 15:59

No, no cleaner it's not that big really. We've never had one.

Yes I understand no back and forth. We are there every day as it is so bar clothes, toiletries and some sleeping gear, we have a lot of stuff there anyway!

Like I say, it's obviously not going to be as nice as being at home. But I'd rather be able to work.

Will your insurance pay out if you burn the place down cooking breakfast? 😅

This is exactly what we're thinking. Blow up bed in the office, nice little heater in there too 😂 take aways/food we already have which I'll take.

Internet there too so can continue to watch our Netflix boxsets on laptop at night haha.

Novelty will wear off eventually I'm sure but I don't think it sounds so terrible? Grin

Hadn't thought about insurance to be fair!! 😅

Sounds perfectly reasonable.

To be honest with you if you can be confident that you can drive door-to-door without coming into contact with anyone if you need to make a trip back home to pick up things you’ve forgotten I think that’s be fine, as long as you’re not shuttling back and forth.

PuppyMonkey · 17/11/2020 16:04

My only worry would be comfy chairs and a bed to sleep on - otherwise though I can’t fault your plan OP.

PackItUp · 17/11/2020 16:05

Yeah, we have a driveway at home so no need to come into contact with anyone on the street or anything if we ever did need to nip back to the house for anything.

Seems like a good idea. Too many businesses are suffering so it's good that you can keep going.

Jroseforever · 17/11/2020 16:08

I think with this level of disruption
I would just get two tests despite having no symptoms

There's an old tatty sofa in the office, I wouldn't call it the world's comfiest chair but... Needs must 😂 and air bed to sleep. Not the best I know but I just feel like we'd be daft not to try and stress ourselves out with no work when we could be there carrying on!

We can't unfortunately Sad the person we've been in contact with is a close contact who's now tested positive. Even if we tested negative now, we still have to complete the isolation period!

I'd stay in the comfort home and go back and forth as normal. Honestly the risk is just minimal......

This is our feeling! We're fortunate we've got the space, and can make it work even if it's not the best. It's better than potentially getting into a shit situation work wise if we can help it.

It's been said before, but let's say it again:

If you have to self-isolate, you have to do that for the full period whether or not you get a negative test. A negative test just says you haven't developed it yet, and you could easily come down with it the next day, so you can't stop self-isolating. Getting a test does not help at all.

Jroseforever · 17/11/2020 16:17

Ah sorry - my mistake

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 17/11/2020 16:17

I don't understand why you don't just go in every day and stay at home at night if you're not coming into contact with anyone?

Well I guess we could but it wouldn't be legal strictly speaking 🤷

Fire risk? Is it rented some say no overnights, if not and its commercial premises its worth letting the fire brigade know that it's occupied overnight. We have to do this when we do sleep overs at the scout hut as they don't prioritize unoccupied premises.
Personally we would definitely do what you are suggesting and have similar plans in place.

Carolines100 · 17/11/2020 16:38

I'm a great believer in sticking to the rules but I think this is one small risk I'd take to allow you to keep working especially if your hubby is already there as he would need to make the journey home,

I wouldn't take the risk of driving their each day ( I know it wasn't you that suggested it), what happens if you break down / crash etc you would have to contact someone.

Those saying get tested, it doesn't stop the need to isolate.

Fizbosshoes · 17/11/2020 16:39

If you think its liveable then I would do what you propose. My only issue would be if one (or both) did become ill would it be comfortable in terms of feeling I'll and not having your home comforts.

yelyah22 · 17/11/2020 17:19

I would if I were you!

The only thing I can think of is that if you need to be in a workshop then presumably you're making or handling stuff (I think - I can't think of any office stuff that you couldn't do from home as it's your own business, but please correct me if I'm wrong!) so anything you sent out could potentially be a (small but not zero) infection risk.

If that's not the case then go for it :)
