London exodus??

Newdonewhugh · 16/11/2020 14:53

Has anyone else noticed that their Town has a lot of people moving from London?
Are local Town and village FB pages literally have 2/3/4 people a day joining and posting with the likes of “I’m moving to ..... from London next week, can anyone help me with X,Y,Z”
My Sister and others said they’ve noticed it too.
We live in South Coast.
I just wonder what this New World will look like. What will happen to London?

But that's always been the case. Everyone knows property prices far outside London are cheaper? Some people still prefer to live in London, believe it or not; this was the case when they moved in

Yes, that was my point - it has been happening for years. But I was also agreeing with previous posters that this move was pushing up prices in areas that London-deserters want to be in (typically detached houses with good local schools) - the house they were bidding on with their spare cash (not needing to get approval for a bigger mortgage) went for at least £10k more than the asking price.

Skipsurvey · 16/11/2020 17:10

so many, from Croydon for a start.

CountrysideIsForEveryone · 16/11/2020 17:11

Apart from missing out on the house, I am not bothered personally. I am not 'local' anyway, just didn't have the benefit of a big profit from the London property boom.

Skipsurvey · 16/11/2020 17:11

otoh where i live has always been an exodus from Londoners, for at least 25 years, including me!

tectonicplates · 16/11/2020 17:20

All those people complaining about Londoners moving there and pricing them out - you do realise you've been doing the same thing to us for years, right? Thousands of people move here from smaller towns, thereby pricing Londoners out, and now the tables are turning you're annoyed about it. Maybe just for once our prices will come down and Londoners will be more likely to afford to stay here, and not have to move away from their family and friends.

justasking111 · 16/11/2020 17:22

It is not just londoners other city dwellers are relocating to our area N Wales from Cheshire, Lancs.

thecatsabsentcojones · 16/11/2020 17:23

Yep, in rural Kent and there seems to be a new child each week at my kids school. I think it’s lockdown related, being locked down in a city must be pretty claustrophobic.

ThatDirection · 16/11/2020 17:25

@ProfessorSlocombe

Be interesting to see if a sudden influx of Londoners to less well served parts of the country starts an uplift in public service expectations. If not services themselves.
I love sunshade which saw an influx of London money about 6/7 years ago as people were priced out of closer towns to commute to and we were next along the line - although a grueling unreliable commute. No, it did nothing for the town in terms of improved services. All it did was put the price of a large 4/5 bed detached out of reach of those looking to move up from a 3 bed or semi.
Staffy1 · 16/11/2020 17:26

Yes, noticed this a lot on local FB group.

ilikebooksandplants · 16/11/2020 17:27

We bought our flat in London a couple of years ago. Would rather set self on fire than move anywhere else in the country. If we leave, we will move out of the UK.

Feel like unless you had long term plans to move out anyway, moving out of London because of the pandemic is a bit short sighted. I firmly believe there’s a financial incentive in getting people back into the office as soon as there’s a vaccine good and ready, and it might cause a fair amount of problems further down the line when people are living out in the sticks but expecting to work remotely. I think as nice as it sounds, it just won’t be allowed to happen. Will be interesting to see what happens there, anyway! Hopefully those of us who stayed will clean up re: promotions etc!

Can’t wait til my lovely London life of pubs and museums and events is back full steam ahead as well. I even miss my commute. Sad I am very tired of covid.

tectonicplates · 16/11/2020 17:28

I have to say though, a lot of the actual Londoners moving to the countryside are going to get a shock once they get a serious illness and have to travel for ten miles to get to a hospital.

waterlego · 16/11/2020 17:28

Proudboomer I’m wondering if you live very near me. I’m also on South coast and approx 1hr 38 min train journey to Victoria!

I am between Worthing and ferring. That little bit called the gap.
pontypridd · 16/11/2020 17:31

I love London. We live in a small flat with no garden. It’s been a struggle but I wouldn’t leave.

Like some other poster said, people move here from other parts of the country and world and push our prices up - hence us being squashed in small flats.

It’s a bit of fairness if things are now happening the other way round.

Skipsurvey · 16/11/2020 17:31

10 miles to a hospital?
more than 16

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/11/2020 17:31

tectonic there is one quite important difference between many if them. Most (ordinary) people move to London because they got a job. They live and work there. They are full contributors to the local economy.

Here we have households that don't contribute to the local economy much more than the council tax. We're becoming a dormitory town for the major cities 2 - 5 hours away!

waterlego · 16/11/2020 17:34

Wow Proudboomer- very very close. I’m near the sailing club!

Dongdingdong · 16/11/2020 17:36

Presumably these Londoners are all selling their houses in London to other people in order to fund their move. So hardly a mass exodus.

Dongdingdong · 16/11/2020 17:37

Seriously? I’ve lived in London all my life and 10 miles is nothing. Some of us Londoners even have cars, you know!

Dongdingdong · 16/11/2020 17:39

Croydon is not London. Not proper London anyway.

MrsKramer · 16/11/2020 17:39

WFH and everything on Zoom calls has worked remarkably well in my sector . But that's when everyone is remote. It will be interesting to see if it still works when some people are physically present and others not. I fear those on a screen will end up marginalised, and their move to Gloucestershire will seem a little rash.

Oliversmumsarmy · 16/11/2020 17:40

If prices go down in London I will be moving further in.

Friend has just sold her place in Wales (Beautiful large house bought last year before the pandemic) So quiet at night. No sirens or traffic noise. They hated it.

I wonder how many people in time will do the same

buddhasbelly · 16/11/2020 17:41

Weve had a lot of folk moving up here to the Scottish Highlands. It's good to get more folk moving into an area with outward migration but Im wondering if I'll ever be able to afford a house now 😂

Legoandloldolls · 16/11/2020 17:42

I live in a town that has always seen Londers move to once their kids hit school age. It's really weird seeing the train station car parks deserted right now.
The most notable change it brings is more coffee shops. Every other shop is a coffee shop in one town

Saz12 · 16/11/2020 17:43

Central Scotland, 45 mins from airports with regular London flights, and yes villages and rural property around here are attracting high number of buyers from London.
I don’t like the idea of people flying every week (co2).
But otherwise, we only get one life, and if an individual/ family decide that all the plus-points of London are outweighed by moving elsewhere then fair enough. Though like a previous poster it’s an odd time to make a decision.

Though Id really appreciate it if Londoners would wait till I’ve bought the house I want and pay an overinflated price for the one I want to sell. Smile...!
