London exodus??

Newdonewhugh · 16/11/2020 14:53

Has anyone else noticed that their Town has a lot of people moving from London?
Are local Town and village FB pages literally have 2/3/4 people a day joining and posting with the likes of “I’m moving to ..... from London next week, can anyone help me with X,Y,Z”
My Sister and others said they’ve noticed it too.
We live in South Coast.
I just wonder what this New World will look like. What will happen to London?

Movement out of London not surprising. Noise, heat, carbon monoxide, congestion, high prices, parking costs, dirt, litter, pigeons, light pollution, Coronavirus, pests rats, polution smells, rental prices, house prices, crowds, limited sky space, limited sun space, nature povity, restricted horizons. No wonder there is a move to escape.

Actually if her house in potters bar is 500k, she would save 15k by moving now. In my area of east Finchley, a house is a million so I wouldn't say it's pointless. I am not a big fan of potters bar so I wouldn't do the same and I haven't really found any zone 4-6 locations that are right for me.[/quote]
I - erroneously - assumed it wouldn’t apply to second properties. I still reckon buying so close to London is pointless. Especially Potters Bar, it’s dire.

Dongdingdong · 17/11/2020 19:59

Potters Bar’s so close to London it seems pointless.

Agree - very strange, but each to their own!

dollyoix · 17/11/2020 20:00

No ones saying Londoners are saintly but they’re accustomed to a multi cultural environment they’re going to notice the striking lack of diversity in some places

I notice the lack of diversity in lots of places in London when you look at who lives on the streets & attends the schools as opposed to the access to restaurants or different cooking ingredients. Brixton now looks & is completely different to the Brixton I grew up near for example. Tooting is already changing. My dc's school is much more mixed in the upper years then the lower years because the catchments are now so tiny.
There is a road in Wandsworth that has a state school on it, virtually everyone who lives on that road is white & the kids all attend private schools. Another one of my friends is the only black family on the street. There is a lot less diversity compared to my childhood imo.

I live in z4. Prices have risen here.

wheretogothisyear · 17/11/2020 20:01

@Skipsurvey I'm
Surprised too

Divebar · 17/11/2020 20:04

@dollyoix

You should try Norwich.

( plus people in London don’t live their entire time on one street )

You do realise that no London boroughs are even in the top 100 areas worst affected by coronavirus?

But yes, I have heard that rats are a species exclusive to London Hmm

JuliaJohnston · 17/11/2020 20:17

Who knew there was limited sky and sun space in London? 🤔. Can't say I've noticed this phenomenon myself.

dollyoix · 17/11/2020 20:18

@Divebar

Why is that relevant? Are you saying areas haven't gentrified & changed?

What part of London did you grow up?

Dongdingdong · 17/11/2020 20:21

Can't say I've noticed this phenomenon myself.

Neither have I - nor any nature “povity”. Though I did notice a squirrel sleeping rough the other day.

JuliaJohnston · 17/11/2020 20:22

Are you really suggesting that areas "gentrifying" is the reason for the under representation of black people??

MrsLighthouse · 17/11/2020 20:29

The more people move out , the more room there is for me ! I LOVE London ❤️...everything about it . I lived in a small town for 6 years ....longest unhappiest 6 years of my life .

MrsLighthouse · 17/11/2020 20:31

...and @VinylDetective Potters Bar was the small town l speak of 🙄

dollyoix · 17/11/2020 20:32

Under representation where? My post was a general point about diversity.

However do you think gentrification has had no impact on the black Caribbean community in Brixton?

VinylDetective · 17/11/2020 20:34

@JuliaJohnston

That would be because you haven’t been to the Fens where the skies are huge.
hopingforonlychild · 17/11/2020 20:35

@MrsLighthouse

What was wrong with potters bar, out of interest? I always thought that it was quite similar to high Barnet and the non posh parts of whetstone which are outer London but places that Londoners do move out to for more space.

Zixxy · 17/11/2020 20:36

Once the vaccine is found to work, it will be all back to London again.

But no one will be able to afford it. Prices will rise again. Outside space is the key to any decision anyway, whether in London or elsewhere. I feel sorry for those living in or selling flats with nothing like this.

JuliaJohnston · 17/11/2020 20:37

That would be because you haven’t been to the Fens where the skies are huge.
I'm pretty sure it's the same sky...

VJoK · 17/11/2020 20:38

Bucket loads of people are leaving London because accommodation in London is tiny. TINY. And if you're in a small flat with multiple people and no outside space you start going insane. Even if it's your family..... 2 adults in an open plan flat with kids helter-skeltering around. Even for the most loved up family - it's a nightmare. But the main factors here are companies have now realised that it's cheaper and more productive to have people work from home. You no longer have to pay for prime real estate for an office. A small space for the occasional meeting is far more useful. Most companies are saying they will not go back to that way of working. There will be a sizemic shift in office buildings in central london.- lockdown has busted an awful lot of myths.
Lack of commuting time, no fighting for meeting rooms and people will still deliver - everything has changed. London is indeed the best city in the world but for people who would rather live in something larger than a rabbit hutch then this is an amazing time. So... Yes they're coming out to share your amazing life with even a little bit more room so they can work, live and play. All it can mean for you is the value of your house will go up as demand gets higher.

JuliaJohnston · 17/11/2020 20:38

I have a view across the city from my London street, and when I look upwards - the sky is practically infinite 😁

Divebar · 17/11/2020 20:39

@dollyoix

I’ve no doubt there are areas of London that are more gentrified ( by which I assume you mean white?? 🤷‍♀️) now than when you were growing up. I’m just not sure if the point since London as a whole remains diverse and most people travel around to some extent. Brixton is still a vibrant, culturally diverse area. I didn’t grow up in London I grew up in a rural area with barely any people of colour - it’s still very very white. I have spent 20 years in London though and have lived in Paddington, Battersea, Croydon and Wimbledon. I have worked in Notting Hill, Earls Court, Streatham and Hendon - all different I’m sure you agree. None of them are as white as my home town.

Dongdingdong · 17/11/2020 20:44

That would be because you haven’t been to the Fens where the skies are huge.

Meh, the Fens - you can keep them. The flatness is so depressing.

dollyoix · 17/11/2020 20:47

None of them are as white as my home town.

Did I say otherwise? I was simply making a point that London isn't as diverse in many areas as it was.

Heyahun · 17/11/2020 20:47

But people always Left London - most people I know come here while they are young for jobs - then move out by the time their second child comes along for more space!? I don’t think this is a new thing - I have had Different friends leave London every year for the last 10 years For a bigger place elsewhere
