Why are music videos so sexual these days?

I love Little Mix's music, however i've just seen their new music video for Sweet Melody and it just seems a bit "much" e.g. thrusting the floor and Jade literally has her bum on display through most of it.

Maybe i'm just a bore and don't "get it".
But it just felt like a nice song was ruined by a very out there music video.
I'll post the link.

They look ridiculous. It's funny how the male dancers are not required to wear skimpy costumes......

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 15/11/2020 16:51

I feel like the 80s stuff was genuinly sexy.
That little mix video is like an almost cartoony porn. I dont find it sexy at all.

hammeringinmyhead · 15/11/2020 16:54

It's an odd one, in their case. I've always liked them, but some of their early videos (2012-2013) like DNA and Move have them in the black leather-type outfits yet very definitely in trousers or at least mid-thigh shorts. They're no longer under Simon Cowell's label so I would assume are choosing the songs and routines because they want to, after nearly 10 years.

That said I think there is this idea that girl groups never used to do this and it's false. TLC did No Scrubs with a lot of bum-wiggling in leather bra tops. The Saturdays were writhing around on a wet stage for All Fired Up. I don't really remember Girls Aloud doing much other than standing in a row though...

Holly Valance was naked in the Kiss Kiss video in 2002 ... just some lasers or something covering what was left of her modesty Grin

A song about sex.
LadyFelsham · 15/11/2020 17:06

YANBU

They look ridiculous-grunting, groaning and pouting and as for the woman that turns around, three or four times, so that we can get a full view of her arse...put it away love!

Wannabe girly gansta look-all very silly.

I suppose it can only get worse and it won't be long until we're treated to a full on polished, hairless minge shot, complete with diamond stud, winking at us.

Doyoumind · 15/11/2020 17:09

I've been saying this for ages about LM. I feel so disappointed that in this day and age they have to wear so little and dance so provocatively. Surely they should know better. I know they will say they are empowered but it's BS and sets a horrible example for young girls. I'm sure they will look back and see it as a mistake.

OwlBeThere · 15/11/2020 17:10

🤷🏼‍♀️ Not new

LadyFelsham · 15/11/2020 17:12

No, murder isn't new either but it doesn't mean we should become de-sensitized to it.

TicTacTwo · 15/11/2020 17:15

It seems that the music videos and social media are as important as the music these days.
It seems that musicians are judged by the number of followers as much as how many numbers ones they have or is that me being old and the charts being more of a talking point in my day? My music mad teen wouldn't have a clue who was number 1 even on Spotify where as when I was a teen listening to the chart countdown on the radio was a massive deal.

Janaih · 15/11/2020 17:17

Video killed the radio star ay?

AngeloMysterioso · 15/11/2020 17:20

It is depressing isn’t it. At one point they have Jade turn around whilst the other three are standing still- it’s not part of the dance routine or anything, it’s purely to show her bare ass.

PrincessNutNut · 15/11/2020 17:40

Did you seriously make that comparison???
Fanofromanticseries · 15/11/2020 17:57

Yeah and it's all lip fillers and botox too. They don't need it. It's sad really.

Most music lovers have no clue what is number 1 anymore because it's universally shit now the singles charts. It's just whatever rubbish written by 10 different writers, auto-tuned and computerised via algorithms appeals the most to kids. That Little Mix song a good example, so it's no wonder they have to use their bodies to sell the video.

Plenty of good music out there being made, but it won't be getting to number 1 in the singles charts.

CuppaZa · 15/11/2020 18:04

Probably because their music is shite.
They have to find some way of selling it.

Kittykat93 · 15/11/2020 18:14

It's bloody awful. That one who kept showing her bare arse when all the others were standing in a line.. Like why. These are role models for really young girls, at least put some clothes on??? And the constant pouting and smouldering looks, orgasm faces and ridiculous humping of inanimate objects is just sad.

legopolicelady · 15/11/2020 18:21

I would not let anyone under 16 watch their videos. Don't they have a young audience?

legopolicelady · 15/11/2020 18:26

Watching the music video on mute and I'm cringing. What kind of dance moves are they? Theres no creativity in that video whatsoever. I feel like I've seen it all before.

thefourgp · 15/11/2020 18:40

It’s not a good video but sex sells. They’re talking about a sweet song so I think they should have gone in a more innocent direction but most of their fans will like it. It’s another wank bank video for all the middle aged men who fancy them.
I have noticed that a lot of female singers nowadays feel the need to be permanently made up like a drag Queen. Nothing wrong with being creative with make up but even when they’re just on a talk show or photographed out and about it’s like they need to constantly be wearing a mask of make up. Male singers just don’t have the pressure put on them to do that it’s sad women do - many of whom are pretty/beautiful without layers and layers of make up on.

I really, really doubt it's aimed at the average Mumsnetter.

Their audience is basically teenage girls. Maybe some a bit older who liked them when they started.
PrincessNutNut · 15/11/2020 19:18

I remember videos with the same tone as this in the 90s. Some were even more explicit, although those songs didn't tend to do well and nobody remembers them now.

Little Mix is aimed at young girls. I would be more worried about what the boys might be watching.

It strikes me that nobody really gives much of a shit when male singers surround themselves with grinding, scantily clad women...

Yup, this was evident last week. They have edited Sweet Melody in parts I wouldn’t even think twice to notice but they consider it too much for general viewing. And then the MTV EMAs... women are dancing on tables for men singing/rapping. And that’s ok but LM dancing isn’t?
