Why are music videos so sexual these days?

I love Little Mix's music, however i've just seen their new music video for Sweet Melody and it just seems a bit "much" e.g. thrusting the floor and Jade literally has her bum on display through most of it.

Maybe i'm just a bore and don't "get it".
But it just felt like a nice song was ruined by a very out there music video.
I'll post the link.

To be fair I think LM are past the stage are being told what to wear, and wear what they like. These girls are performers, it’s just part and parcel and nothing new in the last few decades. It’s just a shame they get picked on more than other artists because nearly a decade ago their market was more young girls. They’ve grown up, so has that market.

I think they look great. MTV edit these things, if you feel so strongly.

Yanbu

Silverstripe · 15/11/2020 14:50

They’ve always been sexual. dirrty had Christina Aguilera prancing around in assless chaps in a sex dungeon and that vid is 18 years old.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/11/2020 14:51

There is someone having sex in white house in VengaBoys video😂
There was always sexual stuff in music. Ever since I remember.

Young women spend a prolonged period immersed in a dysfunctional, sexist industry and start stripping off for men as "empowerment" .

Sad. Depressing.

I actually find the repeated views of them standing in a line up facing the camera except for the woman in a thong who instead turns her back to the camera to make sure we can see how exposed she is a bit disturbing.

user1294729492759 · 15/11/2020 14:55

I do agree that it's not new. I still find it sad and depressing though.

Walkingtheplank · 15/11/2020 14:56

Oh dear. I've just watched it. Had to turn the sound down as painful to listen to.
What do they look like? One of them even has their arse out! And strangely whilst it's all out there, and theyre all simulating sexual pleasure, it's surprisingly un-sexy.
I can't imagine anyone repeatedly clicking on it for sexual pleasure themselves.

But what do I know? 🤷🏻‍♀️

PearlclutchersInc · 15/11/2020 14:57

Its videos where women are "humping" and "thrusting" that are real turn offs (and yes, guys doing it are just as bad)

God I feel old Sad

Graciebobcat · 15/11/2020 15:00

I was pleasantly surprised how many recent videos were not overly sexualised when I watched a few on YouTube recently.

IfNotNow12 · 15/11/2020 15:00

Ah Bananarama , bless ' em Alec , thanks for that clip. They always sang like they'd just run up a flight of stairs after smoking 10 B&H but I have been taking fashion tips off them for years, they looked so great!
And they didn't have to get their arse cheeks out.

Witchcraftandhokum · 15/11/2020 15:00

If I had a body like Jesy I'd walk around naked constantly!

CarrotCakeCrumbs · 15/11/2020 15:05

The runaways had a 16 year old girl in fishnets and lingerie to perform Cherry bomb and I think that was 1976.

LeSquigh · 15/11/2020 15:08

@Buster72

Madonna hitchhiked naked 30 years ago. Forgot the artists but "let's talk about sex" was early 90s too... Even Olivia Newton John got slated for her video to let's get physical Sex sells
@Buster72 Salt n Pepa. And I can rap it straight through like it was yesterday. In private of course..... 🤣
LuckyAmy1986 · 15/11/2020 15:12

I just can't imagine the likes of Adele needing to strip down and thrust the floor as her voice is amazing

Well the two aren't mutually exclusive. Christina Aguilera arguably has one of the best voices in the world and still gyrated her way through the Dirrty video for example! I wouldn't say she needs to do it, I guess she just wanted to!

Ditto for Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Ariana Grande.

Sex sells, it's nothing new. Justify my love by Madonna for example.

Otamot · 15/11/2020 15:15

Definitely an attention thing, but I think it's as sexy as cancer.

Unless Weird Al's head is superimposed.

At my YR6 leavers disco (1991) they played ‘I wanna sex you up’ complete with grinding moves by most of my fellow pupils.
That would NOT happen at my school’s YR6 disco where I work now.
It’s not a new thing to have sexy videos and songs, I think you just notice it more as you get older.

Janaih · 15/11/2020 15:21

While I agree it's nothing new, the sexiness has definitely become more pornified. Cher was in her skimpies but she was running around a warship smiling and having fun.
The little mix vids have that drugged up, dead behind the eyes "do whatever you want to me" vibe that I find very sad.

Otamot · 15/11/2020 15:31

Kevin Bolk's gender swap Avengers poster is also relevant here...

@Silverstripe

They’ve always been sexual. dirrty had Christina Aguilera prancing around in assless chaps in a sex dungeon and that vid is 18 years old.
That song is about sex anyway though and getting naked. The video will match the song.
raspberryk · 15/11/2020 16:05

Just wondering which rock some of you and op have been living under all this time.
Many many music videos have been like this and much worse for at least 4 decades!

SomelikeitHoth · 15/11/2020 16:28

It's totally inappropriate and that's why we don't allow MTV etc

AgeLikeWine · 15/11/2020 16:34

Remember David Bowie cavorting (very Daily Mail word) naked on the beach with a model in his China girl video?

Or Madonna’s boobs popping out in Papa don’t preach? Or her getting her kit off completely in Erotic?

Sex sells. Always has, always will.

ShebaShimmyShake · 15/11/2020 16:35

Watch it on silent with the Thomas the Tank Engine theme on in the background (the old one, the real one), it's very funny.

Mochudubh · 15/11/2020 16:38

Anyone remember FGTH performing Relax on the tube?

Mochudubh · 15/11/2020 16:40

The Tube TV programme, not the underground ( though that would have been worth seeing).
