Manager keeps booking Covid tests for me

372 replies

Jimbellselmbath · 15/11/2020 13:18

We have on site covid testing at my work. No need for symptoms, anybody can have one. A few people go just for 20 minutes away, most don't want one as they do not want to isolate and lose 2 weeks wage (plus partners wage I suppose) if they were to test positive with no symptoms.

Anyway, I don't think they are getting the uptake they anticipated and suspect there are targets managers are being given for testing.
I keep getting texts saying 'your covid test has been booked for xyz' I have not attended any of them.
I had a message on my screen yesterday from my manager saying 'can you do me a favor, I have booked you a covid test for xyz' I still didn't go, manager is off site and there is no way of replying to her.
Today I got a text saying my test has been booked and I must attend even if i do not plan on taking the test (automated type texts- cannot reply)
I don't know whether to go or not. I won't be having the test but I don't think the testers would have any way of stopping these messages as surely they don't have access to that system?
Manager isn't in today, we only cross paths about once a month, i wouldn't know how to contact her outside of this. There are other managers who are more accessible, should I ask those? Is it an HR matter? Do I just keep ignoring the messages as they have not been promoted by me? I feel like complaining about the sneakyness of it all but I don't know who to.
What would you do?

I wfh and have done for many years. I'm low income and do rely on in-employment benefits. Although self-employed now I have in the last decade worked some PAYE and for many years previously and, at times, have been unemployed as well as an homeless single parent. I'm still a single parent with an adult aged disabled child.

But, given all of my experiences and perspectives I can not fathom why anyone would refuse a CV Test and consider it's someone else's fault that I think I should refuse.

Why? Really why would you?

Polly111 · 15/11/2020 21:43

If finances are worrying you, you should be able to claim £500 for the two weeks you would need to self isolate following a positive test. NHS test and trace will be able to give you the details when they phone.

Mmsnet101 · 15/11/2020 21:52

@Jimbellselmbath if it happens to be Amazon you work for, its likely the covid Marshall for your shift booking you in so that's who you need to speak to. Most of them are normal team members acting up, they have covid Marshall on their high viz.

@Nicknacky

ilovemypantry Where have people said that wouldn’t isolate when positive? Can you direct me to the posters who have said that?
Not going to get tested is the same as getting tested, being positive and not isolating. You don’t have to have symptoms to be positive so you could well have the virus and be spreading it without knowing. Deliberately refusing to get tested is the same thing as not isolating as you don’t know if you have it or not...just think about it, it’s not that hard to understand.
Nicknacky · 15/11/2020 23:15

ilovemypantry It’s not the same at all, stop making up rules.

In that case, all of us could be spreading it and should we just then self isolate?

At last, a voice of reason!

ilovemypantry Yes, another poster who wouldn’t be affected and agrees with you. What a shock.

Easy to have strong opinions and not give a fuck about others.

I’m not making up the rules, don’t be so stupid. Covid is making up the rules! And yes, all of us could be spreading it, and we are all self isolating because we’re in another lockdown (or are you not doing that either?).
Nicknacky · 15/11/2020 23:21

ilovemypantry You are making up rules.

I’m not in lockdown and even if I was I wouldn’t be self isolating. Why would I unless I had symptoms or had to?

I don’t know how you have the gall to quote “not give a fuck about others” when you are obviously in agreement to people not having the test in order to try and stop the spread of the virus. No wonder we’re in another lockdown and hospital admissions and deaths are rising again with people like you amongst us.
Nicknacky · 15/11/2020 23:27

ilovemypantry Sorry, just to be clear. You think people should be self isolating if they are in a lockdown area even though there is no requirement to do so?

You’re not in lockdown? So you’re not in England then, because the whole of England is in a 4 week lockdown. The reason we are in lockdown (and it’s really not that difficult to understand) is because the virus is getting out of control again. Hospital admissions and deaths are rising again. It is possible to spread the virus without having any symptoms...I can’t believe you don’t know this!
Ilovemypantry · 15/11/2020 23:29

Sorry, just to be clear...do you actually know what lockdown means?
Nicknacky · 15/11/2020 23:31

ilovemypantry I know it’s shocking to imagine but not everyone on mumsnet is in England. And no, I wouldn’t be self isolating even if I was in lockdown.

Sorry, you must be getting confused. Can you show me where I said asymptotic people are not spreading the virus?

Nicknacky · 15/11/2020 23:31

ilovemypantry You do realise being in lockdown doesn’t mean you self isolate? What makes you think it does?

Ilovemypantry · 15/11/2020 23:40

@RegularHumanBartender

So you’d rather be walking around with the virus and passing it on to others? It’s people like you that are to blame for high rate of transmission and resulting hospitalisations and deaths

^That is a disgusting thing to say. I'd be ashamed to type out something so pathetic and vile.

I'm going back to page 1 to see if I can fill my bingo card. Have we had ventilators yet?

It’s not at all pathetic and vile, it’s the truth but many people don’t want to hear it...just put your fingers in your ears and mutter “blah, blah, blah”. This is a world pandemic and it’s up to each and every one of us to protect each other and do the right thing. Just because it’s not easy doesn’t mean you don’t it, otherwise we will never get through this.
Nicknacky · 15/11/2020 23:42

ilovemypantry Just to confirm, you do understand you don’t have to self isolate if you are in a lockdown are? Of course, you may chose to but that’s your choice.

Ilovemypantry · 15/11/2020 23:44

@Nicknacky

It means limiting contact with others as far as possible. WFH if possible, not using public transport if possible, not going to pubs, restaurants, gyms, leisure centres, not going shopping unnecessarily, not meeting up with friends and family etc.etc. In my view, this is pretty much self isolating. But I’m sure you know all of this already, just not choosing to do it.
Ilovemypantry · 15/11/2020 23:48

@Nicknacky

I bet you’re not going to have the vaccine either when it’s available.
Nicknacky · 15/11/2020 23:48

ilovemypantry Ah, so you do understand it’s not self isolating then.

I work out of home where social distancing and mask wearing is tricky.
I don’t use public transport.
Don’t particularly go to pubs
I am going to restaurants.
I do go to the gym.
I’ve been out to shopping centres.
I mainly see my dad.

All of that is permissible and with the rules, even your made up self isolating ones.

Nicknacky · 15/11/2020 23:48

ilovemypantry Oh I will get the vaccine, as will my children.

Nicknacky · 15/11/2020 23:54

Actually, to be fair I haven’t ate in a restaurant for a while and it is about once or twice a month we would go. I am going out for lunch this week though.

When you are in lockdown as we are in England at the moment, you can’t go to pubs (they’re shut), can’t go to restaurants (they’re shut),can’t go to the gym (they’re shut), can’t go to shopping centres (they’re shut) so all of that is definitely not permissible during lockdown. I did not make up these rules, btw, it’s come from the government in order to try and help stop the spread of the virus. In my eyes, that’s pretty much isolation, or should be if you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing.
Nicknacky · 16/11/2020 00:01

Ilovemypantry I have been in lockdown like you lot are now. I still didn’t do any self imposed isolation. And just because you consider it isolating doesn’t make it so.

Maybe look up the definition of isolation if that helps your understanding?

And I still worked out of home during lockdown.

Ilovemypantry · 16/11/2020 00:02

Where in the U.K. do you live (Scotland, Ireland or Wales?) or are not in U.K.? Did you follow the rules of lockdown when it was in place in your area?
