To keep all 4 kittens taking the total number of cats to 20!

Sorry this is long!

Right I live rurally. Since living here I have always had 2 or 3 cats as pets as rodent deterrents. I know the mice and rats are there but if I can't see them or any evidence of them they can go about their lives and ill go about mine. My current cats are spayed / neutered and frankly never leave the house through their own choice. They are pretty useless as anything other than furry paperweights.

About 3/4 years ago a feral cat showed up. Horrifically skinny and injured. Cats Protection trapped it for me, spayed it and under their trap and release policy released it back at mine. Tbh it wasnt a big problem. I put biscuits and water out in the stables and it hunts the rodents. Over time it learnt to tolerate me but its a yard cat not a pet. Great.

But ... a couple of years ago another cat turned up. Heavily pregnant and completely deranged. Wouldn't go in a trap. Disappeared and then came back with several juvenile kittens. All also feral. Short while later some of these also spawned kittens which went on to spawn more kittens. At one point there was over 40 (!) cats of varying ages roaming around.

Over time the majority of them have been befriended but cats protection still class them as a feral colony (even though they no longer are feral) and so won't take them to their centres for rehoming and neither will the 2 other local smaller charities I asked. I understand why they have other more urgent cases and these are fed and looked after. When discussing with them about trying to find some of them homes, they advised me NOT to advertise them because they had seen increased cases of kittens / cats being used for dog baiting! As a result i have been terrified of selling them, I know not to advertise them as free to good home and so all friends and family who can be have been persuaded to have kittens/ cats. This leaves me my 3 original pets, 10 ex-feral which now come in the house and 2 which tolerate me but live outside.

Just before lockdown another cat turned up. Shes pretty friendly so we thought perhaps she was lost. Advertised and put her on Facebook but noone claimed her. Arranged to have her spayed but lockdown happened (she was booked in for that first wed!) and so it was cancelled. She became pregnant and had 5 kittens. I really struggled to find people we know to take them but in the end managed. When the warmer weather came she vanished again. She returned about a week ago with 4 kittens aged about 4 weeks id guess. I've asked everyone I can think of and asked them to ask people but I cant find anyone willing to have them.

Whilst logically I know if I advertise them (for money) the chances of them going to a dog baiter is small I just panic at the thought that they might. So ..

AIBU to keep all 4 myself if I can't persuade anyone else I know to have them .....

Are you in the UK?

Swingbin · 15/11/2020 11:04

Photos please! Personally I would advertise for a small donation towards your feral cat rescue and vet any potential owners.

Nottherealslimshady · 15/11/2020 11:07

It's not just baiters it's people who'll keep it for a year then move house and leave it behind and allsorts. I couldn't. Use the kittens as bait to trap her and get her and all kittens spayed. Or us her as bait to find the male producing all these kittens and get some kitten support and him neutered! Bet there's no mice for miles round you!

Nottherealslimshady · 15/11/2020 11:08

Whereabouts are you?

yetanothernamitynamechange · 15/11/2020 11:10

Have all the cats living there now been spayed even if they cant be rehomed. I assume yes, since it seems the number has decreased from 40 to 20 and if they hadnt been spayed it would have gone up. But if not I would prioritise that - including for the kittens if they are old enoug, whether you keep them or find a new home.
I would also try to rehome if possible, my understanding is cats are normally happier by themselves/in small groups so it would probably be better for them. But charge enough that it wouldnt ba appealing to dog baiting scum/ maybe ask to check the home first as well. If someone was adopting from an official cat rescue they would have to do that anyway so it shouldnt put someone who was decent of.

Retiremental · 15/11/2020 11:12

Are they all healthy?

Elvesinquarantine · 15/11/2020 11:12

Advertise and vet the potential owners.
When I got my current cat it was through gumtree; I couldn't find any sanctuary that would let me adopt other than an FIV cat because I live in central London and keep her indoors. The owner had put a small price on the ad to deter non-cat lovers, but didn't actually charge me once he'd determined that I wasn't after a kitten for nefarious reasons.

RedDiamond · 15/11/2020 11:14

I would love a kitten!

BarbaraofSeville · 15/11/2020 11:18

Maybe try to find a more accommodating vet and/or rescue organisation?

www.catchat.org/index.php/cat-rescue-centres-uk-ireland

I foster for a local one and we've been rescuing (safe/socially distant) and our vets have been neutering where needed, except that we only did emergencies where cats were sick or injured during the first lockdown. There's provisions in the regulations covering animal welfare and voluntary/charity work, so it is allowed.

Otherwise, as you have discovered, un-neutered cats leads to the population quickly getting out of hand, which is a welfare issue.

Cherrysoup · 15/11/2020 11:23

Omg, please get the trap out and get them spayed/neutered. You’re re-populating the entire country with cats!

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 15/11/2020 11:25

We got a feral cat from a farm he couldn't even be handled I had to wear gloves to pick him up. 2 years later he is the biggest softy ever. Hope you manage to sort something OP. If you have space and can afford them, keep them.

Madzhouse · 15/11/2020 11:27

Yes I'm in England. Tbh mum is very friendly so she'll be easy to catch and get spayed but vet has said to wait until kittens are weaned. Kittens are varying degrees of friendly atm but getting better so I'm confident that I can get them all done and have no more surprises. The other other one not spayed that I know of will be whoever has made this one pregnant but its not one I've seen.

Haha no haven't seen any mice (or rats) for a while other than dead ones!

namechange that's interesting. The cats do group themselves off in various rooms of the house in smaller groups of between 2 and 5. They only all really together when the cat meat goes down and that's when I realise there is far far too many. Otherwise they just hang out on shelves or the baskets scattered around the place!

I cant get the photos to post. Hang on!

Aw me!!!! I'd love them! Shame you aren't closer

Trying to adopt cats or kittens is seemingly impossible! Gumtree want £250+ per kitten and that's not even specific breeds and the rescue places either demand outside space or everything advertised is reserved.

LindaEllen · 15/11/2020 11:33

I personally think if you can look after them, and you're happy to have them, go for it.

When you mentioned 40 cats, I literally sighed and thought this woman is living my dream!

Nottherealslimshady · 15/11/2020 11:34

Aw I want one! We genuinely would but we have a big dog and a baby on the way. You'd have to vet the homes and the people before handing a kitten over.

HermioneN · 15/11/2020 11:37

I'd imagine a rescue could find a good home. I've been trying to get a kitten from a rescue (as opposed to buying one online and not knowing where it's really coming from) It's virtually impossible to get a kitten at the moment as far as I can make out.

Blufandango · 15/11/2020 11:39

Could you let your local vet know that you have kittens and either ask them to advertise, getting people to ask them for your number, or at least mention them to people who might ask? I guess people in the vet would be fairly sensible future owners. Other than that, would keeping them mean you have 16 cats rather than 12? Apart from that clearly being worthy of a Channel 5 documentary, then why not? You obviously care for them and they clearly like you...

AcornAutumn · 15/11/2020 11:43

I’m laughing at myself for asking this

But have you got time and attention for such a high number?

It sounds brilliant though!

Madzhouse · 15/11/2020 11:51

LindaEllen Ha you think that but the cleaning of dirty footprints is the level of crazy. I'm not even really a cat person or I wasn't anyway .....

They are adorable. I have no idea of the process of rehoming but I know plenty of lovely families who would take one in.

Chickoletta · 15/11/2020 12:02

Where in the country are you? If Cornwall, I’ll take 2 for our farm!
