To keep all 4 kittens taking the total number of cats to 20!

Sorry this is long!

Right I live rurally. Since living here I have always had 2 or 3 cats as pets as rodent deterrents. I know the mice and rats are there but if I can't see them or any evidence of them they can go about their lives and ill go about mine. My current cats are spayed / neutered and frankly never leave the house through their own choice. They are pretty useless as anything other than furry paperweights.

About 3/4 years ago a feral cat showed up. Horrifically skinny and injured. Cats Protection trapped it for me, spayed it and under their trap and release policy released it back at mine. Tbh it wasnt a big problem. I put biscuits and water out in the stables and it hunts the rodents. Over time it learnt to tolerate me but its a yard cat not a pet. Great.

But ... a couple of years ago another cat turned up. Heavily pregnant and completely deranged. Wouldn't go in a trap. Disappeared and then came back with several juvenile kittens. All also feral. Short while later some of these also spawned kittens which went on to spawn more kittens. At one point there was over 40 (!) cats of varying ages roaming around.

Over time the majority of them have been befriended but cats protection still class them as a feral colony (even though they no longer are feral) and so won't take them to their centres for rehoming and neither will the 2 other local smaller charities I asked. I understand why they have other more urgent cases and these are fed and looked after. When discussing with them about trying to find some of them homes, they advised me NOT to advertise them because they had seen increased cases of kittens / cats being used for dog baiting! As a result i have been terrified of selling them, I know not to advertise them as free to good home and so all friends and family who can be have been persuaded to have kittens/ cats. This leaves me my 3 original pets, 10 ex-feral which now come in the house and 2 which tolerate me but live outside.

Just before lockdown another cat turned up. Shes pretty friendly so we thought perhaps she was lost. Advertised and put her on Facebook but noone claimed her. Arranged to have her spayed but lockdown happened (she was booked in for that first wed!) and so it was cancelled. She became pregnant and had 5 kittens. I really struggled to find people we know to take them but in the end managed. When the warmer weather came she vanished again. She returned about a week ago with 4 kittens aged about 4 weeks id guess. I've asked everyone I can think of and asked them to ask people but I cant find anyone willing to have them.

Whilst logically I know if I advertise them (for money) the chances of them going to a dog baiter is small I just panic at the thought that they might. So ..

AIBU to keep all 4 myself if I can't persuade anyone else I know to have them .....

My friend is desperately looking to adopt 2 kittens. Where about are you OP?

Madzhouse · 15/11/2020 12:05

acorn see originally i subscribed the to notion thag cats are aloof and just get on with life until this lot moved in. They legitimately swamp you when you sit down and you just get lost under a body of cats. I work from home mostly so I have to cycle myself through the day in the different rooms where they hang out so they all get a fuss. They've all got stupid toys and stuff as well to amuse them although they prefer climbing up the sweeping brush and attacking the door of the washer when it's going....

Kittens are fairly high demand atm.

Why not advertise but stick a price on them to deter baiters- £150 for example.

If they sell it’s more likely a genuine home. I paid £100 to a rescue for our adult cat, what with lockdown and all raising the demand I reckon people will pay it, even for moggies.

FrightClub · 15/11/2020 12:09

I'm getting strong 'Father Dougal and rabbits' vibes.

LST · 15/11/2020 12:10

Oh wow. Do you have room on your land for a small motorhome? I want to come and live with you 🤣

Bluntness100 · 15/11/2020 12:10

Gosh this brings back memories. My grandfather was like this. They had a sort of gazebo summer house thing in the garden and a cat had a large number of kittens in there, who then went on to habe their own kittens,

My grand mother hated it, and when he was on a golf trip had the rspca come in and remove them.

When he came back we all sat and watched him wander round the borders of the garden with a piece of fish in his hand saying here kitty kitty as he couldn’t understand where they all were. No one told him. 😱

It’s a shame no charity will help out but if you’re happy and can afford to feed them, then go for it,

Madzhouse · 15/11/2020 12:11

I didn't think of the vets thats a good idea. My dogs are at a different one to the cathorde so I can ask them as well.

I'm in Staffordshire so nowhere near Cornwall sadly :(

Perhaps a mumsnetter would like a kitten if you say what county you are in?

demolitionduo · 15/11/2020 12:16

I'm looking for a ginger kitten (one colour I don't have presently) so if you are nr Hertfordshire I'd be happy to help you out.

SparklingLime · 15/11/2020 12:19

I’ve found that the smaller, independent rescues are so much more flexible and responsive. You can hopefully find someone local to you on this website:

www.catchat.org/index.php/cat-rescue-centres-uk-ireland

eightxmaspaws · 15/11/2020 12:20

I understand why the rescue centres are saying that but imo it's a common problem that rescue places have ridiculous rules and can get overly hysterical whilst doing nothing sensible to fix very real problems. And by and large they have to take a gut call on vetting the people who come to rescue centres and they sometimes get it wrong! Advertise and vet people yourself. If you feel 'off' about anyone or their circumstances, don't hand a cat/kitten over. You already have a lot of cats and by the sound of it, I foresee even more waifs and strays on your doorstep.

eightxmaspaws · 15/11/2020 12:27

I should say that I have rescue pets (as a preference) but not through the 'big' names because they have been, by and large, unhelpful and overly pedantic. 'No' to anyone with children under age 8 for example. So I prefer the smaller charities (and to give money to because they are often struggling with very little whereas the well known, like Battersea are absolutely rolling in cash )

Peacocking · 15/11/2020 12:44

We had 20 at our maximum. Mostly rescue, old or disabled. We are down to about 16 now. I love them, but by god its been hard work and expensive. Kittens are not too bad. Healthy adult cats...again not too bad. Unwell and elderly cats are a bloody nightmare though. They need lots of attention and care, they become very needy. Special foods and accommodation around their frailty. You love them fiercely, but spend most time feeling guilty because you can't possibly give them all the time they want. Housetraining becomes far laxer as they age and endless cleaning and a smelly house is par for the course. I dont want any of my individual cats to die, I care about each one. At the same time I really look forward to the day when numbers are much much lower.

Just my 2p worth!

Where in Staffordshire? Rough idea, I'm in Staffs and I know several people looking for kittens who'd offer great homes.
Runningoutofnamestochange · 15/11/2020 12:58

One here wants a black one, another wants a kitten. Is there not. TNR programme that could help?

In the UK standard kittens are selling for £180-£500 at at the moment. they won't go for baiting.

Madzhouse · 15/11/2020 14:30

Are they really? That's daylight robbery!

ShowOfHands · 15/11/2020 14:33

We are looking for a kitten atm as dd's much loved pet died recently but rescues can't help and I am utterly determined not to pay a backyard breeder who is capitalising on Christmas and lock down. Woman down the road wants £500 for a bog standard kitten. Cute but just moggies. People are paying though and her poor cat will be pregnant again immediately.

Loveable1 · 15/11/2020 14:37

The photo of all the cats together is my worst nightmare Grin I’m not a cat person personally!

Good luck finding homes for a few of them, you have a very kind heart to look after them all. Flowers

LindaEllen · 15/11/2020 14:40

@Madzhouse

LindaEllen Ha you think that but the cleaning of dirty footprints is the level of crazy. I'm not even really a cat person or I wasn't anyway .....
Awwww sorry but that picture still hasn't put me off! Can't think of a way to explain to DP why I've suddenly got the inspiration to get 40 cats though; so I suppose I best not!
Nikhedonia · 15/11/2020 14:40

I love that cats when posing for photos display a look of both contempt and pity Grin

Cheeseandlobster · 15/11/2020 14:42

@Bluntness100 your poor grandfather. What an awful thing to do to someone. He should have had the option to keep a couple and say goodbye to the rest

GigantosaurusRex · 15/11/2020 14:46

One of ours was put to sleep this week, the other had a tumour so is currently being spoilt which means soon we will be down to one cat. I've started keeping an eye on rescue pages etc but there are very little around for rehoming. Any thoughts on if this is due to increased demand during lockdown or simply that rescue centres have been unable to take cats in for various reasons? I've no intention of upsetting my poorly cat and Christmas us coming (too disruptive for a new cat to settle) but I'm not convinced we will find a new addition as easily as in the past.
