To want a doctor to check DS's scalp

I know this should really go in children's health, but I am posting here for traffic.

I noticed some quite bad dandruff on DS (10) scalp a few months ago - large, dense, very white flakes attached near the root rather than the tiny transparent snowflake type. A pharmacist said to try Head and Shoulders, which did nothing. A different pharmacist recommended Capasal (which is a coal tar type) which didn't help either. I got a bottle of Selsun, which initially seemed to help, but he complained that there was a burning / stinging feeling with it (listed as a side effect) so we have had to abandon that.

He says it is itchy and I have seen some nasty, angry looking patches. When the sun caught him on the side of his head this morning it also looks like his hair may be thininng in places.

AIBU to request a GP appointment for this?

Photos have just been sent. (I was unable to get an appointment last week, even on the phone, but asked if I could have the required link anyway, so that when I did eventually get an appointment the photos would be there ready to view)

I'll let you know what the verdict is once I've spoken to a GP

My toddler son has this too, to the extent that patches of skin were coming away with his hair attached to them. We’ve not found a cause as yet.

Often dry scaly scalp is caused by excess oil, strange but true. I have it as an adult, and tried every product on the market believe me. Have let my hair grow as I am far too embarrassed to go to the salon.

I found that dry shampoo really helps.

I was recommended this from MN for my itchy scaly flaky scalp. It's 90% cleared up after 4 weekly uses.

Thanks again for all the suggestions as to what he could use on his hair longer term.

GP asked about eczema and if he'd had it as a baby as she felt it looked like scalp eczema from the photos I'd sent. It jogged my memory as to when he had eczema/inflammed skin behind his ears as a toddler which I had completely forgotten about. She has prescribed a steroid scalp lotion to use daily for the next 2 weeks and has said that the treatment was the same for both scalp psoriasis and eczema on the scalp, so hopefully this will clear it up.

I asked her what shampoo we should be using and she said to avoid baby shampoos as said they can actually be quite harsh (I assumed to help with cradle cap?) but said to use one with minimal perfume and additives so I will ask the pharamcist when I collect this prescription

I think the Aussie shampoos are fairly gentle, and agree with the Dr that baby shampoo is very stripping. Coconut oil works wonders at keeping it all under control one you’ve go there.
