Aibu to hate viewing clothes on models (online shopping)

I find their facial expressions distracting and sometimes off putting even. The poses don't show the clothes properly. The full outfit is not helpful because it makes me wonder what product am i actually looking at. Sometimes the model is wearing a hat, a scarf, a coat, a skirt, a top, tights, boots and carrying a bag. invariably the out of stock skirt in the outfit is what catches my eyes and not the plain top that that whole photo was for. Or when the image changes as you scroll down or move the cursor over it.

I love websites that let me see the item on its own in a flat shot.

I think catalogue models are so unnecessary. I don't look like them even my colouring isn't the same. They are neither a realistic nor an aspirational look for me. Just unnecessary distraction and added costs to my garments.

Is it just me? I have other sensory issues so i'm up for being told i'm being unreasonable.

H&m you have the choice to either see the clothing on the model or flat

Extra0rdinaire · 15/11/2020 10:46

Yes i shop there and i love that option. Many other websites don't offer it though.

It's not much help for me when they are all at least 6 inches taller than me and a lot thinner. I've no way of telling if the clothes will work on me. I like when they give measurements and I can get out the tape measure to try and guess how long a skirt will be.

bumblingbovine49 · 15/11/2020 10:50

I'm the opposite. I need to see clothes on someone to see the for I am much more likely to buy it if they have a video of the model wearing it and showing it from all sides . We are all different it sems, unlucky for the marketing people Grin

EmeraldShamrock · 15/11/2020 10:51

Yanbu. Certain models look like they're orgasmic depending on the site it turns me off clothes too when they're stupidly posed. Grin

FlyNow · 15/11/2020 10:52

I like it because sometimes the clothing looks nice on its own but it looks shit on the model. If even a beautiful thin model can't pull it off there's no way I will so I know not to buy.

RattleOfBars · 15/11/2020 10:54

I like seeing the clothes on models, it gives an indication of how the fabric will hang. And they often put the height and dress size of the model next to the photo.

I notice more online shops are using plus size models and those with different body shapes nowadays, or they show the same item on an athletic model and a larger size model.

EmeraldShamrock · 15/11/2020 10:54

It is handy for the shape I'm sick of buying trousers when the crotch is close to the knees instead of my bum.
I like high crotch trousers so I really inspect that area of models in trousers.

Bluntness100 · 15/11/2020 10:54

I prefer to see the clothes on and flat. I don’t look to models to look like me or be aspirational, I find that unusual, I’m just looking for someone to model it so I can see what it looks like on. Things can look very different on than off.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 15/11/2020 10:55

I mostly find it incredibly annoying if there isn't a photo - and a video - of the clothes on a body, so I can discern the actual proportions and how the thing hangs. Plus a flat photo of the item itself.

Generally I shop from sites that do provide both the visual and the written information I want - and ignore the rest.

I don't look like them even my colouring isn't the same.

You need to broaden your source list! Plenty of clothing websites show clothes on a decent variety of models. (As regards the cost of models, I believe there's progress with using erm ... non human avatars instead. Though I'm not sure how I feel about that ...)

Bluntness100 · 15/11/2020 10:56

Agree, that is also very helpful. If I would normally order the ten and the model is wearing a ten but is clearly much slimmer than me, I know to order a twelve, for example.

SnuggyBuggy · 15/11/2020 10:56

I like videos for skirts and dresses as it gives an idea of how it moves and what the fabric is like.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 15/11/2020 10:57

I like having the option - I think several sites I use let you toggle or select between on model or not. I find it helpful to determine the length of clothes, especially the sites that tell you the height and dress size of the model, or the size she's modelling.
I do need to make mental visual adjustments for the size six, six foot tall models, but still useful Hmm
Ignore the daft gurning, or adjust the picture to visually decapitate them if it puts you off that much.

Bluntness100 · 15/11/2020 10:57

I don’t understand why you feel th model should look like you? The point is not to show what it would look like on you, it’s to show simoly what it looks like on a person.

Givemeabreak88 · 15/11/2020 10:58

I disagree, I personally prefer to buy clothes that I can see on someone.

LaLaLanded · 15/11/2020 10:59

I like seeing it on a model - particularly if there’s a video because then you really get a sense of what’s going on. As a PP said if a model chosen for her excellent proportions can’t make something look good, that’s a red flag.

Also I’m 5’10 and online models tend to be between 5’8 and 5’11 so selfishly it’s useful to know - stops me from buying things that are way too short.

Chamomileteaplease · 15/11/2020 11:00

It makes me laugh when the item of clothing looks absolutely hideous even on a gorgeous model. Ergo it would definitely look disgusting on anyone else Grin.

Purplecatshopaholic · 15/11/2020 11:03

I’m the exact opposite op. I need to see the clothes being worn on a human body - can’t stand seeing them ‘flat’

SentientAndCognisant · 15/11/2020 11:04

Models are chosen as a medium to best show off clothes, they’re not representative of real life
Clothes hang well on tall, slim models.
You should know your own body, own style enough to know if it’ll work for you

murmurgam · 15/11/2020 11:08

I saw one the other day that said model is a size eight wearing a size ten. Seems a bit misleading to me. If the size 10s look best on a size 8 surely they should be size 8?

SnuggyBuggy · 15/11/2020 11:11

The hard thing is when it's a fashion season with bugger all for a shortarse

mayflowerapplepie · 15/11/2020 11:14

I think it is helpful to have a selection of photos for each outfit with a few different women of different sizes and heights. Instead of one, almost always thin woman in multiple poses. Then you can see what it would look like on someone like you

WildfirePonie · 15/11/2020 11:15

I like to be able to see how the item of clothing fits, for example how long a top is. I hate it when I don't see the item modelled.

39weekswithno2 · 15/11/2020 11:16

I like to have both options

borntohula · 15/11/2020 11:18

If anyone is interested, ASOS shows you pics of different sized models wearing the same item. I don't think it's every item but it's handy.
