Aibu to hate viewing clothes on models (online shopping)

I find their facial expressions distracting and sometimes off putting even. The poses don't show the clothes properly. The full outfit is not helpful because it makes me wonder what product am i actually looking at. Sometimes the model is wearing a hat, a scarf, a coat, a skirt, a top, tights, boots and carrying a bag. invariably the out of stock skirt in the outfit is what catches my eyes and not the plain top that that whole photo was for. Or when the image changes as you scroll down or move the cursor over it.

I love websites that let me see the item on its own in a flat shot.

I think catalogue models are so unnecessary. I don't look like them even my colouring isn't the same. They are neither a realistic nor an aspirational look for me. Just unnecessary distraction and added costs to my garments.

Is it just me? I have other sensory issues so i'm up for being told i'm being unreasonable.

I like SHEIN for this. The models are wearing the clothes, but they are also pictured flat. They give the models height and size and for most items there are reviews with "real people" styling and wearing them.

Sadly it's more my teen DDs thing style wise but it's great

Largely I agree with you, but it's useful in M&S because if the tall size 8 gorgeous twenty something looks frumpy in an outfit - then I don't stand a hope in hell!

The Sainsbury Tu website models piss me right off they have their arms wrapped round their waist or acroos their chest or leaning forward. . Stand straight so I can see the clothes not a crumpled heap Angry

Annoying because they have some nice things

Freshprincess · 15/11/2020 11:25

I prefer to see them on the model. I’m tall, so it gives me of how long sleeves are, if the waist will be in the right place, if the leg length is long enough. Also if it looks terrible on the beautiful young and slim model, it’s not going to look better on me.

I do get a bit put off when the models look as miserable as sin though.

StartingGrid · 15/11/2020 11:28

I hate when they pose abstractly, or do things like tuck the tops in - I want to see the length and cut, not scroll through 15 photos of her doing the hokey cokey

SaskiaRembrandt · 15/11/2020 11:31

I prefer to see clothes on a model so I have some idea of how the garment hangs, but that only works if the model is standing in a normal pose. I hate it when they try to be arty or edgy or whatever it is they think they're doing, and have models weird, often bandy legged, poses.

whensmynexthol1day · 15/11/2020 11:31

Generally I like to see both and agree that knowing the height of model and what size she is wearing is helpful. I don't like baggy jumpers so can judge a bit better how much to size down by.
Zara though gives me the rage as models don't pose in realistic poses eg leaning back or sitting down - neither of which shows you how they hang! The coats are particularly bad

God I love reviews! Toast, Free People, Uniqlo spring to mind as sites with useful reviews. I'm too lazy and self-centred to contribute but they really make a difference to whether I buy something or not.

It's almost more useful than the sites that offer tools for fitting the clothes to your measurements. So much faff! Often I get bored or start to doubt my own judgement at some point during the process; wander off and buy something elsewhere.

MrsElf · 15/11/2020 11:39

I prefer to see both - some retailers are appalling for having arty shots where you can’t get any idea of the clothes, but the “model is 5’10 in a size s” still helps. Why oh why photograph tops with the sleeves pushed up, or the model’s hair over the neckline? What is the point?!

MintCassis · 15/11/2020 12:12

I prefer to see the clothes on a model to get an idea of what it looks like on, and like when they give the height and dress size of the model.

I’m between sizes so especially like when the reviews have an option for previous buyers to say if the item is true to size or comes up small or big. I usually look to that to help me decide which size to buy.

Freshprincess · 15/11/2020 12:22

Oh I forgot about models not standing up properly. I don’t really need to know what the skirt looks like when you’re sitting down.
