To tell teacher friend about grammar error?

ImaSababa · 14/11/2020 18:41

A friend of mine is a primary school teacher, and is making and selling cushions on Facebook. Lovely. The problem is, they're riddled with mistakes, such as "Christmas at the Johnson's" when surely is should be "Johnsons'".

Should I tell her?

Yes, in private though.

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 14/11/2020 18:42

Nope. Shortened version of Christmas at the Johnson's house.

Plural version would be Christmas with the Johnsons.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/11/2020 18:43

No. I’d hate you (even though you’re correct).

alexdgr8 · 14/11/2020 18:44

of course not.
is this serious.

NoGoodPunsLeft · 14/11/2020 18:45

I think @TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup is right so it is correct.

stayathomer · 14/11/2020 18:45

It would be Johnson's !!!

This. Your friends grammar is correct.
lyralalala · 14/11/2020 18:48

Surely it would only be Johnsons’ if they were Peter and Mary Johnsons? If they are Peter and Mary Johnson (as I assume they are) then Johnson’s is correct

Piggybuttons · 14/11/2020 18:48

Johnson's is correct!

itssquidstella · 14/11/2020 18:48

But in English we refer to families in the plural: Mr and Mrs Johnson are 'the Johnson's', which means that the apostrophe should come after the s: The Johnsons'.

itssquidstella · 14/11/2020 18:49

Argh, Mr and Mrs Johnson are 'The Johnsons'!

SarahBellam · 14/11/2020 18:49

She’s correct.

No, that is wrong. It’s Christmas at the Johnsons’ house. Or Christmas at the Johnsons’. The Johnson’s makes no sense, ever. I would tell her.
DannyNedelko · 14/11/2020 18:50

Johnsons' is right. I wouldn't say anything though.

ImaSababa · 14/11/2020 18:51

It's a shortening of "at the Johnsons' house".

I just think she ought to know.

0utForAWalkBitch · 14/11/2020 18:51

Oh god.

Assuming there’s more than one Johnson in the family, OP is correct. Cushion is wrong.

sorryforswearing · 14/11/2020 18:51

Well I’d want to know.

0utForAWalkBitch · 14/11/2020 18:52

I’d tell her. I’d feel like a dick doing it but surely she’d rather know.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 14/11/2020 18:52

I'm twitching at this, because I'm convinced it should be "grammatical error" in your title. The word "grammar" is a noun, not a verb nor an adjective, so it would not commonly be used as a modifier.

However, having refreshed my memory on the parts of speech, I recall that a noun adjunct can be used as a modifier (for example, "School room" or "Head's office".)

Any road, I'd say nowt. Definite lead balloon situation.

FelicityBeedle · 14/11/2020 18:52

She’s right unless you’re using a changed example and the original ended in an S

longwayoff · 14/11/2020 18:53

You ommited a question mark at the end of your sentence. More attention to your own grammar before opining on other people.

FourEyesGood · 14/11/2020 18:53

OP is correct! Can’t believe so many people think she’s wrong!

FelicityBeedle · 14/11/2020 18:53

Sorry ignore me I’m being dim arent I Grin

ShipOfTheseus · 14/11/2020 18:54

@itssquidstella

Mr and Mrs Johnson are the Johnsons. No apostrophe. You visit their house - the Johnsons’ house. Christmas at the Johnsons’ (house). Or Christmas with the Johnsons ( the people).
