To tell teacher friend about grammar error?

A friend of mine is a primary school teacher, and is making and selling cushions on Facebook. Lovely. The problem is, they're riddled with mistakes, such as "Christmas at the Johnson's" when surely is should be "Johnsons'".

Should I tell her?

Just for anyone still arguing with OP Hmm

SummerHouse · 14/11/2020 18:55

Oh who cares. No one agrees. I just find ways not to use apostrophe's.

NaughtipussMaximus · 14/11/2020 18:56

She (and most of the previous posters!) are incorrect, and you’re right - it’s ”Christmas at the Johnsons’ [house]”. It’s the house belonging to the Johnsons, so it’s plural, in which case the apostrophe goes after the S. “Christmas with the Johnsons” would also be correct but wouldn’t need an apostrophe at all.

I wouldn’t tell her though - I doubt she’d thank you and as this thread has shown, most people won’t realise it’s wrong so it won’t put them off buying her merchandise.

flaviaritt · 14/11/2020 18:57

What does this have to do with her teaching? Butt out!

flaviaritt · 14/11/2020 18:57

Christmas at the Johnson’s’ is right, but really, you’re having a pop at her, and nobody likes that.

Pumperthepumper · 14/11/2020 18:58

Why though? The people who buy them obviously don’t know that it’s not 100% grammatically correct. So what you want to do is embarrass her. She’s you’re friend?

Pumperthepumper · 14/11/2020 18:58

Fucking hell, that’s ironic 😂

SummerHouse · 14/11/2020 18:59

May I offer.... The Johnsons's house.

JK Rowling uses this for James's so it must be acceptable.

Chestnut23 · 14/11/2020 19:02

More than one Johnson = apostrophe after the S

Johnsons' house

flaviaritt · 14/11/2020 19:02
Blush

Ha ha. Phone!

Chestnut23 · 14/11/2020 19:03

@summerhouse that would only work if their surname was Johnsons!

flaviaritt · 14/11/2020 19:04

Johnsons’

Yes, this is correct. But OP, I note that in your original post, you wrote "Johnsons," with no apostrophe at all, which would also be incorrect. Although I think you corrected this in your second post.
Cleebope2 · 14/11/2020 19:05

English teacher here and it is “at the Johnsons’ “ . I wouldn’t correct her as people hate it when I correct their grammar so I don’t bother(except DH, DD and DS).

DramaAlpaca · 14/11/2020 19:06

It’s Christmas at the Johnsons’ house. Or Christmas at the Johnsons’.
The Johnson’s makes no sense, ever.

This ^^ is correct.

It should be "Johnsons' house" in whatever context it's used.

Covidaquestion · 14/11/2020 19:06

LOL at the number of smug fuckers saying OP is wrong Grin

Tell her OP. Be kind doing it, but do tell her.

heyfrog · 14/11/2020 19:08

And James's is ok because when it's plural you don't say "James", you say "James-es" (whereas with Johnsons', it sounds the same whether it's singular are plural)

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 14/11/2020 19:08

IT IS JOHNSONS'

heyfrog · 14/11/2020 19:09

OR plural!

kursaalflyer · 14/11/2020 19:09

Crikey it's like deja-vu. Just had exactly the same on a FB thread with hundreds of posts. Pages and pages of people swearing it's "at the Johnson's". Grin

Christmas at the Johnsons'
Christmas with the Johnsons
Christmas at Mrs Johnson's

Readandwalk · 14/11/2020 19:09

I'm sure people will weep o her the cushions they buy. Seriously I'm sure she doesn't need the advice.

Neversleepingever · 14/11/2020 19:11

Apostrophe for possession. Who does the house belong to?

Neversleepingever · 14/11/2020 19:11

...The Johnson's

Neversleepingever · 14/11/2020 19:11

Because it's The Johnson's house.

kursaalflyer · 14/11/2020 19:12

And I think you should privately tell her. In a 'I'm not sure but is that right' kind of way.
